Your video’s still being useful: I opened my machine to replace the ram, and one of the ribbon cables popped loose. I was completely lost about how to put it back until I saw you remove the one. Like that other commenter said, yours is the only video that seems to actually show that part, everybody else just says “mind the cables” and then jump cuts to the cables being removed. I’d noticed the bit that flips up, but I thought that was the side the cable went into, and I was beginning to despair because it wouldn’t go back 😂

Hi there. For the SDD upgrade option, the text overlay in your video states that there is plenty of depth to support larger capacity modules such as 4TB or even 8TB, but an Asus support representative got back to me on this today to tell me (and I quote): “As for the storage, the maximum capacity one SSD slot can take is 1TB”, which is disappointing to me that this is the maximum storage capacity for each slot.

Nah, that is simply not correct. The chipset/controller can handle (and will) larger capacity drives. There is simply no limitation in terms of capacity. Sometimes the physical vertical space can limit the storage capacity, because larger drives have 2 layers of NAND chips, and won't fit into the slots. That is not the case with this model and trust me, the laptop can handle large (4TB/8TB drives) as well. I honestly don't know, why ASUS says it support only 1TB, that is pure non-sense.

How the heck did you get those pipes off so easy?!

Maybe it is not visible in the video, but actually It is "hard". But I apply only a small pull force to the pipes in order to avoid bending them. You can also use some plastic tool to lever it up if you will, but don't put much force to it. Eventually it will loose and you can pull up. Also you can do some wobbly movement in order to let the paste break its "vacuum pressure".

Hi, you "don't need to", but still be a better option. If you only put a 8GB module into the machine it will work in a dual channel mode as long as you don't fill up the 8GB stick. If you exceed this, other programs will suffer and run in single channel mode. In most cases probably you won"t overdue this, but if you are a heavy video editor/photoshop user (which usually eats up a ton of memory) i would suggest 16+16 variant. ;)

@@MakaiTechReviews As far as I can tell it looks like the laptop only supports PCIE 3.0 (?), so it may not really be worth installing the Samsung 980 Pro permanently. I'll put it in temporarily to test it, but if the performance is hamstrung by PCIE 3.0 I'll eventually migrate the part to a computer that can properly use it. EDIT: So CPU-Z reports that the laptop supports PCIE 4.0, so I'm not sure why the Asus literature says the m.2 drives are at 3.0 speeds. Only testing will tell...

If the thermal pads not brake or dried out, you can simply reuse them, it should work just fine. Otherwise i suggest to measure one with a cliper probe.

@@MakaiTechReviews yea because theres this thing on the aurmory crate called SPPT & SPL for the Cpu that everytime i max out my temps o n cpu and gpu hit the high 90s thats not normal...i think i need to change either the liquid metal compound on the cpu and the stock thermal paste on the gpu plus thermal pads if they look used up

If you change the pads it is very hard to realign the cooling pipes back on spot, Because in order to make it a very tight seal you need to press harder and if you don’t have a clue what you are doing you may break something or otherwise you will have some space left between silicon and metal and risk throttle. If you want a little less degrees just buy the thermal mayonnaise clean the dried one and spread it like butter to maximize the area of thermal area

Hi! The White Stuff is a foamy little "gate" to prevent any liquid metal movement outside the CPU die. Liquid metal is conductive, so it can short the circuit if contact with any other components, so obviously it is a precaution step by ASUS. If you plan to do so with the GPU, I suggest using some kind of coating near the GPU die, cause there are some tiny components that can be shorted.

Thanks for the video! Do you happen to still remember where the warranty void sticker is for this laptop? I want to check my heatsink mount on my unit because it runs way too hot(93c) during games. I saw similar laptops running at 80c with higher power.

Might be a little too late but it's usually on a screw on the heatsink, I think ~90 degrees is quite normal for ROG Strix, I've seen a lot of new ones running 90+. You could buy an external cooler to help it a bit.

@@SicknatureL2 Yup, they applied new liquid metal. When the guy came to my house to check, there was barely any LM on the CPU and the seal was non-existent!!! Manufacturer's fault if I've ever seen one. Anyways, yeah after that I saw 20 degrees drop in temps. I don't think it goes beyond 75 anymore. GPU on the other hand, no matter how many times I get it repasted, it always hits 86C(hotspot is 105C!) which is Nvidia's limit. I've accepted that the device is just designed this way or something I don't see is taking place. Been running it like that ever since.

I Check the SSD types, and some one are a Problem, to fast build, so this is short Lifetime, read amazon one Stars derfore, and the wd black is only at 4 GB, but my be this is good for Lifetime preferences, the ceaperst one ist strong in time Work but to slow when half full, and so i check there ist only wd black 4gb Maximum, and this at 8gb wantend this one , means perhaps waiting...If It is developt. Hey man my pc cpu was get up to 92 degrees and I didn’t yet have Liquid Metal and I had to use a thermal paste on the cpu and now the temps are even worse on idle my cpu is around 80 on silent and when I put it at performance or turbo damn it goes to 95 degrees and I don’t know what to do and I’m damn scared to put in Liquid Metal as it’s conductive when I get it soon. Bro, do you know what kind of white paste is used for Vram and Chipsets... I need help cos i have no idea what to reapply on my strix g15 vram 😢. people say you need to use thermal pad, but no mine comes with white stuff on vram modules out of factory lol

@@joemarooni4580I was never able to validate this btw. I never found one when tearing mine down. I ended up buying a desktop and ditching gaming laptops. It was the 2nd ROC Strix that died on me in 2 years. I'll never get one again.

Hi, glad I could help. @8:10 the Wifi module is Wifi+Bluetooth these 2 are combined together.

If you plug in any external monitor the laptop boots up with that? Bacause if not, in that case it is not the screen which is faulty, but can be bad memory or even WiFi card. If it works from external monitor, then yeah... could be faulty internal display.
