I have evidently been under a rock somewhere as I have no idea who Robert Bennett is, other than the author of this book - BUT - these 3 minutes are absolutely the best, clearest, most insightful explanation of what loving one's country is about! This is what patriotism means. These 3 minutes should be re-broadcast 'from the rooftops' - including in the halls of Congress. Thank you.

@@JohnBlutarski A lot more love the USA than you think . That's why they have been so critical. The ideals of the country is often admired universally. The execution and hate for said ideals within the US itself is by far more destructive than any other forces without. Its like you are rooting for a team bent on destructing itself with drugs, ego, selfishness and entitlement. From the outside looking in everyone's self interest has replaced true Patriotism. Then sit around blaming each other for doing the same thing .

I like Roger but he does suck up to America a little too much. His British education and British internationalist culture is why he has done so well for himself. But let’s be real he loves America because he is Jewish and Jewish people have far more opportunities in the USA than the UK because the Jewish community have more influence in American society. It is not a bad thing just more honest. I’m not sure Roger would have had the life and career he has now in England. He is the brother in law is Nick Kroll.

@corvus2512 3 жыл бұрын
What does that mean though? What future promise do we have that Sweden doesn't? Or Canada? Its nonsense. The people of Sweden don't have to worry about their kids being gunned down in school, Canadians don't have to worry about healthcare, the British don't have to worry about neo nazis stealing their elections. Have you looked at how far we have fallen behind other developed nations? You think that will magically fix itself because “America”?
@greeneyedlady5580
@greeneyedlady5580 3 жыл бұрын
@@corvus2512 I would call all of the things you listed as "present faults". Nobody said fixing them would be easy. The neo-Nazis, corrupt politicians who have been bought by big corporations, the oligarchy, and every elected Republican will fight desperately to keep us from fixing anything. It's perfectly clear that they are still denying climate change, even as it's effects are costing the US thousands of lives and tens or hundreds of billions of dollars every single year.

@@corvus2512 The grass is always greener on the other side. Considering the guest's infatuation with pop culture, it would seem he sees a powerful force in the freedom of expression/creation to effect change for good that is not necessarily found in those other (much more homogenous) countries. Also, I think many liberals would regard the populism of Boris Johnson as being on the same level as that of Trump and his supporters, so I'm not sure that example holds.

Honestly, and i know this wont be popular but i don't get it.... as someone who is an American, i dont get what or why he loves america so much. There are so many things wrong in this country that have been resolved in others... healthcare, secular government, the gap between rich and poor. Frankly as someone who broke his back when i was 22 and suffered for years without health insurance its a little annoying hearing someone from a country where i would have received treatment talk about how great this country is. The only thing i can think of is he is wealthy enough not to have to worry about the things most of us do. We are a nation ripped apart by apathy, greed, ignorance, religious zealots, bigotry, the refusal to deal honestly with our past, useless politicians and so much more, yet we are better than Norway? Or Germany? Or Canada? How many Americans who lost their health insurance during this pandemic were better off being in the U.S. as opposed to Canada? None i would imagine. Its nice to sing of flowery and poetic ideology but on the ground its much bleaker and hearing someone speak about america like that is dangerous... “ya hear that? The European says we are still the best so why do we need their healthcare system? Why should we fix any of our problems? He thinks we are great!”

If you read his book or ever followed any of his work you'll know his love for America is rooted in promise but is highly backed my progressive ideals and not settling for where we are now. I absolutely agree with you on healthcare. It's a crime that we are the only rich country without universal healthcare, and we pay at least twice as much for that privilege, while suffering much worse outcomes. That said, think of it like a personal relationship with another person. We love our family members warts and all. We'd love our significant others not because they are perfect, but because we see their inherent good qualities. That doesn't mean we can't help then try to overcome their other qualities which need improvement.

@@calliarcale A dangerous sentiment. Unconditional love like that can and is easily perverted and used to distract from the very glaring truths of what America IS and to pacify people into not demanding the work be done to get America to what it should be.
