I get that Roger Deakins is an absolute master, & I truly sympathize with the interviewer’s being nervous; however, I found his anxiousness infectious. Maybe next time have a half of a 5 mg diazapam or something.

Despite all the critics, we got an interview. RD is a reluctant interviewee. I have never seen an interview with him that unlocks what is perceived as the secret. It's simple for him, it's a "feel" , instinctual thru many years of exp and pursuit. Now practically every movie is a passion project, he is allowed to influence and make aesthetic calls because he is trusted to execute those decisions.

It is the weirdest thing watching Weinthraub talk to Roger Deakins. Like I know he's a fan, but he doesn't really understand the technical aspects of why Deakins is so good, and the questions end up sounding very stupid whenever he tries to sound like he knows his stuff. Roger is just the nicest dude, but he's very clearly like "Why are you asking me this?". Like interviewing a DOP isn't the same as interviewing a director, they have a very different language and vocabulary and they're not as comfortable answering questions period, so people like Weinthraub who doesn't know how craft actually works shouldn't interview people who are the masters within that craft. Like you don't need to understand music theory to be a fan of a band, but if you want to interview a DOP and you're going to ask about what his favorite camera is, knowing nothing about what an F-Stop is then probably don't.

Some think that the interviewer is bad, but it's honestly amazing to me to see Deakins pushed on some questions to go into further detail, there is so much content in this interview. I've never heard Deakins say that he likens Blade Runner 2049 to Solaris. Freaking awesome.

One thing I'd have like to have known is how much of his lighting actually remained in the final film after VFX had brought all the elements together in Nuke, or whatever compositing software they used. This isn't to denegrate his work as I think Deakins is an amazing DP but I'm sure the VFX department had a huge influence on the final look.
@fiftyfive1s4102 жыл бұрын
Deakins was a major figure in VFX. He has animation experience with Rango and How to Train a Dragon and is well-versed with most VFX workflows. Villeneuve mentioned this in the oscar interview thing, stating that deakins was seriously involved in blending the VFX with his cinematography.

If you're going to go through the trouble of getting artists on the caliber of Roger Deakins to sit down for an interview, you really need to make sure you have someone who knows how to interview. This was a misuse of his time

The way this was set up doesn't do the interviewer favours; such as holding mics and giving him that small upright chair which decided upon his body language etc; I found the interviewer enthusiastic and Deakins is always very laid back which again made the contrast more than it should be. I enjoy Roger's work but I rarely notice anything that many other DPs haven't already been doing.

A true ARTIST, he is the Rembrandt of our time, and his down to earth attitude is priceless. His answers are gold, drone, but why? You gotta ask the question WHY? That is the key question that most Directors and DPs nowadays don't care to ask. And I love what he said about lenses, and using the same lens, its not about lens but the CHARACTER! What a guy.

You know... Roger Deakins is in deed unquestionably great, but he is also wildly overrated in my opinion. Just in as far as he being so singled out as the "alpha omega", when there are many merited working cinematographers right now who in the equally proper circumstances of artistic collaboration affored to Mr. Deakins are just as brilliant in their own unique way as he - and many are certainly even more skilled in their versatile command of diverse formats, equipment, and techniques. Typically the glib hipster tourist has memorized approximately three names of cinemtographers to recite and pretend they are cinephiles; Roger Deakins, Emmunel Lubeszki (call him "Chivo" to be extra cute), and Christopher Doyle. But there are a hundred more current cinematographers just as worth note (some more so): Robert Richardson Vittorio Storaro Caleb Deschanel Robert Elswitt Darius Khondji Dariusz Wolski Janusz Kaminski John Mathieson John Toll Dean Semler John Seale Dante Spinotti Mauro Fiore Jeff Cronenweth Greig Fraser Dion Beebe Bojan Bazelli Rodrigo Pieto Xiaoding Zhao Amir Mokri Slawomir Idziak Eduardo Serra Salvatore Totino Michael Seresin Chris Menges Matthew Libatique Claudio Miranda Bruno Delbonnel Hoyt Van Hoytema Mihai Malaimare Jr. John Schwatzman Donald McAlpine Phil Mehuex Adam Arkapaw Dan Mindel Paul Cameron Rob Hardy Bill Pope Phedon Papamichel Robert Fraisse Peter Suschitsky Frederick Elmes Andrzej Sekula Malik Hassan Sayeed Thomas Kloss Oliver Stapleton Stephen H. Burum Ellen Kuras Linus Sandgren Enrique Chediak Charlotte Bruus Christensen Philippe Rousselot Dan Lausten James Hawkinson Russell Carpenter Oliver Wood Jeffrey L. Kimball Newton Thomas Sigel Anthony Dod Mantle Peter Menzies Jr. Stephen Windon Karl Walter Lindenlaub Ueli Steiger Jo Willems Benoit Debie Gyula Pados Maryse Alberti Javier Aguirresarobe Tak Fugimoto Guillermo Navaro Bradford Young Erik Wilson Hagan Bogdanski Steve Mason Sean Bobbitt Chung-hoon Chung Mandy Walker Andrij Parekh Masanobu Takayanagi Anna Foerster Nicolas Karakatsanis Jonathan Sela Adriano Goldman Adam Stone Mark Patten Lol Crawley Amy Vincent Xavier Gimenez Oscar Faura Ben Smithard Rachel Morrison Lula Carvalho Fabian Wagner Ben Davis Sabastian Blenkov Jacques Jouffret Polly Morgan Yu Cao Densen Baker Thomas Townend Jarin Blaschke Natasha Brier
You do realize that no one in their right mind could recite all those names right? You are correct that there are other great cinematographers than RD but why the condescension?
@Geronimo_Jehoshaphat5 жыл бұрын
@@linusfotograf Deserve is why. And I'm in my wrong mind, therefore I can recite those names easily, especially to tourist who have no business in my town.
