I could listen to him all day long. Every time he speaks I learn something.

Firstly, I want to thank you for these interviews with Roger Deakins. He is one of the most influential cinematographers for me at the moment. I shot a feature film last year where, for budgetary reasons, I was brought in after shooting had started. I ended up shooting about 2/3 of the film. I wish I had the prep time to sit down with the director and flesh out visual ideas for telling the story before shooting began. I will be working with the same director for my next film, and we are making time for pre-production this time around. Despite not having prep time, I was fortunate enough to have worked with a great cast and crew. And being my first feature film, I actually had a pretty good experience. There were some stressful moments, but overall I am grateful for the people I worked with. I learned so much. Taking Roger Deakin's experience from this video, I look forward to applying the same things to all of my future productions.

Deakins is an absolute legend. Sicario and Blade Runner 2049 are some of the most beautiful movies ever made.

I find in cinematography it's easier to figure out how you're going to do something than to decide what you're going to do. But yeah, it's a pretty time consuming task coming up with those visual ideas. It's also just as much based on emotion (so essentially figuring out how your visual decisions are going to make an audience feel) than it is intellect/conceptual thinking.

1:54 "It sounds a bit pretentious" for someone of his stature to say this points to the realness in his character and work.

.... the clip is cut badly to the point of a soundbite. This always happen when we cut the short with no respect to the context of the longer ( complete ) interview. note to myself: don't cut an interview to the point of a soundbite.

The music is too loud and intrusive. Just let Roger Deakins talk.

The music is perfect for me. I don’t know this gentleman (I have only watched a few KZbin materials with him), but my strong impression is that he is an exceptional professional who is genuinely humble. This gentleman is the opposite of arrogance. Seeing and listening to him brings to my mind the image of morning sunlight refracted by a diamond covered in dew. The music in this video fits perfectly with the image in my mind.

Why don't you cut up the interview a bit more? Also, did the interviewer know it was going on? Perhaps he might tactically mic himself so the question might actually be heard. This whole little series from MAINE Film Festival is CRAP!

I wish I could transform into an insect and hide in the room where a screenwriter, a movie director, a director of photography, and other professionals discuss a screenplay. To see and hear how the movie unfolds in each other their minds and how they harmonise all those movies, crystallising it into one common vision. Just imagine that! ☺️
