He’s getting better. If he improves he’s in with a slim chance. He’s still not at the level of Novak and Medvedev and a couple of the other top guys but he can’t be written off. I watched the match in its entirety and Roger’s backhand was very lacking. Gasquet picked up on that almost immediately and directed nearly all of the baseline rallies to Fed’s backhand. He made so many unforced errors on that wing. Luckily, Roger has that deep and low slice to defend with and in some cases, even attack with because of the low-bouncing grass. That’s why this surface really suits Roger’s game. His serve was great, forehand and volleys were good, but that backhand needs to be more consistent and accurate against better players.
@jameskenny5913
@jameskenny5913 3 жыл бұрын
I actually thought towards the end his backhand became quite consistent
@RandomRawrrr
@RandomRawrrr 3 жыл бұрын
@@jameskenny5913 it did somewhat in the 2nd and 3rd. I think that had to do with the fact that he felt more relaxed after being up sets. It’s not like Roger doesn’t know how to hit a good backhand anymore. Ljubicic and his racket change were the two biggest factors in increasing the consistency for that side. We all know this guy can hit winners all day with that backhand (a la 2017 Australian open final vs Nadal). It’s his mentality of thinking he’s had such little match practice this year and that makes him not confident in that shot.
@json_bourne3812
@json_bourne3812 3 жыл бұрын
@@RandomRawrrr It was the same in the first round. Many backhands that were intended to go down the line going into the net - rarely were the cross-court backhands falling short.
@RandomRawrrr
@RandomRawrrr 3 жыл бұрын
@@json_bourne3812 yes I agree, it was the same as the first round. More exploited on Mannarino’s end in that match since he is a lefty and almost causing an upset in the process. I don’t think he’s doing anything noticeably different with the backhand (I could be wrong). For me, I think it’s a mental thing with Rog.

Amazing how Roger can remember match from 2002 played with cilic and the score, played Sampras what year and the score. wow. i bet he remembers all his matches with who the score etc from 2000 onwards.... maybe even in the 1990s ... like GM quoting games from whatever year and the board positions.

@@brankokosteski Roger has the reputation of being extremely professional and jovial during his interviews. I don't recall any salty interviews or comments. But if he did, it makes sense. All pros are going through various emotions, especially during and right after playing. If we stick a microphone to our mouths after emotionally demanding situations, we are not always going to sound rational.

Great English speaker. He is too good. In his German mother-tongue though, letter (G) is Nearly always pronounced ("G" as in GOOD OR GREECE). EG. GERMAN native speakers pronounce the name (ROGER) AS (ROG-R Ferer-R) AS IN RO-GRR. Similarly, (ANGELA MERKEL) is pronounced ANGLE-LAA only in German speaking countries. the German purpose of (G) letter is GREAT sound, or Greece sound.
