To me, this is the match that broke Roddick's heart. I've never seen statistics for a match so in favor of the losing tennis player. First serve %, both service winning %, etc. I think I remember a post-match analysis showing ALL major stats in Roddick's favor. Yet Roger - nothing but magic could've managed this win.
@Aetherwave7 жыл бұрын
That's actually false. When Roddick flubbed that volley, the stats were pretty much equal in both of the first two sets. Up to that point, Roddick had been remarkably clutch to be on the edge of going two sets to love up despite not playing better (or worse) than Federer. After that, Federer was clearly the better player in the third (Roddick only won 3/32 points on return in that set), Roddick was the better player in the fourth, the fifth was equal until Federer saved double BP, then he was the better player and eventually wore Roddick out and won.

This match was epic! I remember watching it live and being on the edge of my seat. In my opinion, I put this match right there with the 2008 final. I think the 2008 final will always be remembered simply for the fact that it was Nadal on the other side of the net from Roger. The history those two had leading up the 2008 final, and the climax of that 5th set will always be remembered. But the 2009 final was just as epic. It was a heartbreaking loss for Andy, and although I was rooting for Roger, I felt terrible for Andy. I wouldn't have been disappointed had he won this match.

I thought of this match a lot after the 2019 final, especially in how Roger lost three Wimbledon finals to Novak in eerily similar fashion to how A-Rod lost three of his own to Fed, the last one each being in such brutal fashion.

@@hiwayman981 Except Roddick was in his prime- 21, 22, 26. Federer was way past his prime 32, 33, 37.

I remember watching this in my house when I was 13 years old. In China it was about 2 am when the game was finally over. I love Federer, he is definitely GOAT. Really glad that he regained the energy this year. US Open, 20th Champion! LETS GO!

Still hurts this loss. Always been a Roddick fan, but being a Djokovic fan nowadays, yesterday's match heals this wound. :)

As big a Rafa fan as I am, I fail to see how this match wasn't remembered as the best Wimbledon final in recent history. The 2008 final was incredible, but this was much closer, and Roddick was throwing everything at Federer. Loads more tense moments and pressure, and neither player lulled at all. Up until the 2018 semi-final between Nadal and Djokovic, I always thought of this final as perhaps the best match I'd seen at Wimbledon.

I'm a Fed fan but Roddick really should've won this one. He was the better player that day. The 2nd set tiebreak loss was a gift to Federer.

7:06 the amount of spin Roddick puts on this ball to make it dip right on top of the service line is insane

Best Andy ever played at Wimbledon... a shame he didn't win. One of the great Finals, IMO.... VERY under-rated all-time Final matches at W.

Ironically Roddick is probably one of the greatest grass court players of all time, but he got stuck in the same era as the greatest of all time. Same deal with Federer who might be the second greatest clay court player of all time

Roddick remined me of another American who made his run, Roscoe Tanner. Killer serve and good ground strokes. Federer showed up with one of his best serve games and great ground strokes. One of the best Wkimbledons ever.

This was so painful to watch again. I remembered every point as if it were yesterday. Why did I do this to myself??? I knew it would sting. Every time there was a momentum shift in Andy's favor, I foolishly believed that somehow the outcome would change.
