There isn't anything I can say about Federer that we don't already know. However, I must say that Safin at his best - not here - plays like those among the greatest. His Australian Open semifinal against Federer in 2005 testifies to that. His main obstacle to fulfilling his potential, though, was his mental fragility. When things went his way, he could show toughness, but he simply didn't do so consistently.

Agree. Safin had so much talent but his motivation was another thing. He could won so many more slams.

Nah Safin was doing fine here, I think if he didn't have such a horrid draw (had to go through roddick and agassi who were the best HC players statistically coming into the tournament) he would have won in 4 sets here. Wins the first set tiebreak and maybe he can pull it off. This was one of the slam finals Safin was not to blame for losing. The Johansson match was awful though. How does that even happen?

@@jliang70 ok then we watch the true. Federer and nadal plays 22 times between 2004- 2010 and 12 matches were on clay, so 10 matches were outside on clay. Even when 10 matches were outside on clay won federer still only 7 matches. But djokovic won 7 matches even when only 5 matches were outside on clay between indian wells 2011 and AO 2012. DO YOU SEE NOW THE DIFFERENT even when federer had 10 matches from 2004-2010 against nadal on outside from clay, won djokovic 7 times between within in 10 months against prime nadal , that what federer could do in 7 season from 2004-10.
