In this video we're checking out Roger Glover. We know of Roger by way of his work with Deep Purple and Rainbow. We were asked to check out his solo album for Patreon, so we'll be doing that soon. But, before we do, we wanted to share this one with you guys. This one has Ronnie James Dio singing. We're sure that means the vocals will be amazing! We're looking forward to hearing this track. I remember this cartoon promo-clip being used as a filler during the children's hours on the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation). It was squeezed in-between kid's programs. Fascinating artwork by Alan Aldridge. I was considering getting a lot of posters of his work (still on the cards).

If you grew up in the 70s/80s in Australia you probably have lots of memories of both this song and Emmerson, Lake & Palmer doing Fanfare For The Common Man. Back when tv programs didn't always align to the timeslots they had available there'd be some filler songs or videos played, often at the same time every day. If I recall correctly, 7:55am on a weekday morning was a common time to see these videos played day after day (I remember that time as I was always getting ready to leave to catch the school bus). Great memories. Dio does a live version of this. I'm sure someone here will note about the choice of vocals and how it all came together for Roger's album and the live performances.

Roger Glover was moving into music production after leaving Deep Purple and surrounding himself with musicians who would work on a variety of each other's projects over the next few years. He had already been involved with an album of children's songs Ian Gillan had been trying to put together towards the end of his time in Deep Purple. Dio was still an unknown at this time, but Elf had been supporting Deep Purple on tour, and this song gave him his first taste of chart success.

The recording had Les Binks (Judas Priest) on drums, Ray Fenwick (Ian Gillan Band and Spencer David Group) on guitar, Eddie Jobson (Roxy Music) violin, Eddie Hardin and Mike Moran on piano. And a lot of other great musicians. The album had some great songs. Behind The Smile (David Coverdale), Get Ready (Glenn Hughes), Together Again (Tony Ashton) and Old Blind Mole (John Goodison extreme deep voice).

This song gave Ronnie James Dio his first gold disc. The whole album is a who' who, of rock musicians. Dio, at the time, was still in Elf, and little known.

"Sitting in a Dream" is another one from this album (Butterfly Ball) that is great. This was done as a side project while still with Deep Purple. Ronnie James Dio was singing with Elf at this time.

I bought the album in 1974. Roger Glover plays piano, guitar and bass. Eddie Hardin on keyboards, Les Binks on drums. Ray Fenwick on guitar. Vocals on Love is all by Ronnie James Dio. Other vocalists on the album is Glenn Hughes, David Coverdale, Tony Ashton, Liza Strike and more. The live performens also had Ian Gillan on vocals.

Thank you for playing this.. A very well played song with uplifting music and a positive message.. This is a great precursor to the Patreon album reaction that you're going to do.. The studio album (best version, in my opinion) is about animals, creatures during the day all going to the ball... the butterfly ball.. and ending with a goodbye song. Very sweet... I would very much recommend that folk tune into this one. The singer, by the way on this particular track is... Ronnie James Dio, who was in bands suck as Elf, Black Sabbath, and Rainbow to name but a few..

I love this song and Ronnie James Dio’s vocals just adds to it: he is one of my favourite singers. This song and the video bring back memories of watching this on ABC Australia back in the 70s. Perhaps others have said but because the ABC was non-commercial they would play songs to fill in time till the next program started. I remember this song, Portsmouth Mike Oldfield and Tusk Fleetwood Mac, just to name a few. I don’t remember a great variety of songs and they would play the same ones many times.

Hard to spot the Beatles influence The ABC (the Australian one) being a gov't run tv network didn't believe in ads even for upcoming shows so there were many times a show would end and it might be five minutes before the next one so they used to play videos like this to fill in the spaces. I've seen this so many times as a kid. Always enjoyed it

The clip itself is sort of like yellow submarine in some ways, it always gave me a Beatles vibe as well. Not the song but the clip.

As usual, good singing by Dio. Just keep away from Roger when he is singing - his Mask album is good musicianship but he should have hired a singer. As we are on obscure Purple related stuff, what about something from the Green Bullfrog album such as Makin Time or the instrumental Green Bullfrog (for guitarists only).
