Totally agree. Roger has incredible technique. He has better technique than both Ribeiro brothers no question. Many, I think, tend to make Roger's size/height a bigger issue than it really is. There have been many black belts above 200lbs who've fought in the Worlds and ADCC and none have achieved what Roger has. You cannot minimize what he has done. Nothing but RESPECT is due.
@elguapoalso12 жыл бұрын
If you're talking about Saulo being more technical than Roger I would disagree with you. Roger is tall and lanky but he is not as brawny as Saulo nor as athletic. Roger has height on his competitors but doesn't always mean he is physically dominate. I'm 6'4 and often find the shorter stockier guys harder to beat. They're harder to finish and it's harder for me to defend because of my long limbs. Roger has a superb defense despite his long limbs. SKILL not size carries him to victory.
@Rujewitblood6 жыл бұрын
elguapoalso I'm average size and I always find taller people easier to grapple, those short stocky "dwarf" built guys with short thick limbs are a fucking nightmare to grapple and always feel stronger than they should be
@KyleVass12 жыл бұрын
it's not minimizing what he has done to say that he is not as technical as one of the most decorated and respected competitors in the world. he may have done what no one else has none but downplay his physique. it certainly helps him to be as big and as strong as he is. can smaller guys win open weight divisions? certainly. but who wins the majority of them? the bigger guys. strength helps and i don't think you can fairly compare the technique of two fighters with such a size difference
@underboss8712 жыл бұрын
I agree with what you're saying. The only thing is I love both fighters - Roger and Saulo are both amazing. But yeah, I don't think size matters very much - look at Marcelo Garcia.

*fairly compare the technique of two of the world's greatest fighters with such a size difference.
@ozzy197611 жыл бұрын
Those who say size doesn't matter are wrong. If you have two guys with equal skill set, but one is much bigger, the one who is bigger and stronger will win 9/10 times.The stronger man can power out of subs and tire the smaller man out by making him hold his weight. I'm not speaking about this match because I'm not sure what the size difference is. Yes Hoger is the taller fighter obviously, but not sure about the weight etc. They are both monsters on the mat and thanks Pato Gonzalez for sharing
@juggernautmma427 жыл бұрын
ozzy1976 being big and tall has its disadvantages also. Little guys get into tight spots easier, and don't tire as easy. All body types have their advantages and disadvantages

Marcelo lost against Roger. Roger is HUGE, it's impossible to get out of his mount. A 60 kilos fighter cannot have the same control has it's way easier to frame him into trouble.

Oh hell yea, Roger is one of the greatest. BUT, i said size helps. And i think we are both right. For example, If you and I have the same skill level and I out weigh you and am taller than you by 6 inches, I can still be beat if you have a great strategy and depending on how the fight goes. But in all honesty, it is much easier to apply a cross collar choke if your are usually much bigger than the guy. It's like anyone can do triangles. But there's a higher chance if you have really long legs

There were several instances where Sau went for a sweep, and because of his length Roger was able to base out on sweep attempt and take his back. Almost every instance where Sau ended in the turtle was because of a missedd sweep attempt. A guy anywhere near his size would have gotten sweeped multiple times.
@juggernautmma427 жыл бұрын
riefferd should have used different techniques. That was his fault, he Rogers

This is why bjj dudes typically suck at the standing portion of grappling. They spend all their time on the feet pulling on each others respective gi in an upright position. Loose the gi's and make takedown/takedown defense a more critical part of your sport and it would make for a better skill set when transitioning into MMA.
