This guy was the real real! I miss serious journalism. I miss the hard living newsman who knew too much. ❤️❤️❤️

They got one of the on-screen names wrong. It wasn't "Martin Rush," it was Martin Bush. I worked at ABC Radio as an engineer.

Producer: "Ok, but keep it tight." Grimsby: "I'm always tight." My, he was droll. The best newscaster, ever. And so very perfect for NYC !!

Today marks 25 years since Mr. Grimsby's departure... hoping his news on the other side is good news even now...

Al Primo had made sure Grimsby and Beutel remained "grounded" (i.e. not getting too much "star ego") by having them do news updates for some of ABC's four radio networks. Grimsby, as I've noted, did some afternoon Contemporary news updates at :55 (as of 1969) as well as Entertainment at :30.

In 1969, Mr. Grimsby also did radio updates for the American Contemporary Network, and was thus heard over WABC Musicradio 77 from time to time. In addition, his anchor partner Bill Beutel sometimes did radio news updates. Finally, around 4:15, notice the Ikegami HK-312C cameras.

Here's the deal: what you saw at the on-air time incorrectly reported as "3:27" was a one-minute headline summary which was actually fed at :26 past the hour. Then on the half-hour, Grimsby did the five-minute Entertainment Network newscast. The affiilated stations would use either the one-minute headline summary at :26 after or the full newscast at :30 past the hour. Then at :35 past, he was through with radio for the day, and took a ten-minute walk down the street to the TV studio.

Not that I know of - all I recall is that he's been with WCBS-TV since the late 1980's (like Ernie Anastos, he's one of the few New York newscasters who's worked alongside both WABC's Roger Grimsby and WCBS's Jim Jensen).

@UTAOUB - It was the "Huntley-Brinkley" combo that inspired Al Primo to pair Grimsby and Beutel in the first place, in 1970.

Slattery moved to WCBS-TV after first working for WABC-TV Eyewitness News in the mid 80's. I worked the street at the time for radio.

Absolutely correct. My error. My fading memory. Anyway, "hoping your news is good news...."

Grismby did daily a daily newscast for ABC Radio for the Information Network. Beutel did a daily newscast for the Entertainment Network. I worked there then as a Desk Assistant (copy boy)

Wasn't John Slattery on WBZ in the early 90s? I believe I recall he worked on their Eyewitness News program in Boston.

@rainsgirl1889 Yeah, Roger Grimsby seemed like a nice guy (with his very dry wit). I remember watching him on channel 7 here in New York back in the 70's and '80s. I enjoyed watching him. Probably the only reporters I liked more would be Gil Noble (Like It Is) and Mike Wallace (60 Minutes).

Grimsby, as of 1969, also did occasional 5-minute afternoon newscasts for ABC's Contemporary radio network - and thus could be heard on WABC Musicradio 77, very likely within the course of Dan Ingram's top-rated show. In short, Grimsby didn't just do radio news updates for ABC Entertainment network.

Both Grimsby and Beutel did the Entertainment Net...Grimsby at 3:30 as I recall and Beutel at 4:30. Grimsby never did the hourly INFO net.
