Roger I (c. 1031 - 22 June 1101), nicknamed Roger Bosso and The Great Count, was a Norman nobleman who became the first Count of Sicily from 1071 to 1101. He was a member of the House of Hauteville, and his descendants in the male line continued to rule Sicily down to 1194.
Roger was born in Normandy, and came to southern Italy as a young man in 1057. He participated in several military expeditions against the Emirate of Sicily beginning in 1061. He was invested with part of Sicily and the title of count by his brother, Robert Guiscard, Duke of Apulia, in 1071. By 1090, he had conquered the entire island. In 1091, he conquered Malta. The state he created was merged with the Duchy of Apulia in 1127 and became the Kingdom of Sicily in 1130.

I went to Malta on March 20th, 2018 (with its historical cultural/significance being a huge reason) and the whole time kept coming back to your videos at night in order to help me appreciate its historical value and to contextualize my own personal experiences... I then went to Palermo and basically I was just really happy to see you posting videos related to Malta/Sicily during my stay there.. Ive been watching your videos since about April 2014 and actually your videos significantly helped me along my path to being 'redpilled'.

Greeks dislike Normans not because of the invasion of Epirotic lands and the near capture of the empire, but for the de-Hellenization of the greek southern Italy and Sicily. Something that the Arabs could not achieve.

Hi, I first wanted to say I love all your material. I’m fascinated by Western European Medieval history and the Crusades as a whole regardless of the time period. I’m so glad you created a channel for this little niche that I doubt most people know anything about or even care about. Thank you for that! I have a question regarding the Normans I’ll get to in a bit. First I wanted to state I’m well acquainted with the Normans and am absolutely fascinated with them. To me they are the most interesting people group ever to have existed and what they accomplished during their brief time existing as...a people or nation (I feel you could call them that despite them being a dutchy in France) is frankly almost unbelievable in its scope. My question is when the Hautevilles and Dregnauts came to southern Italy and eventually subjected it to their rule as well as Sicily, were these territories (Apulia and Claberia) as well as Sicily and later Antioch under the individual rule of the Normans who conquered and governed them, or did those Normans swear fielty to a greater power and therefor those territories were considered part of other kingdoms, or since the rulers were Normans were those territories considered part of the “Norman Empire” for lack of a better term once under subjection? I’d appreciate any answer you can give. Thank you in advance.

Hey, real crusader history, just curious, but have you ever played the computer games "crusader kings 2" or " total war medieval"? Especially the former lets you literally play as every single person yoube ever mentioned in any of your videos. From muslim faction leaders/generals to christians kings, emporers , dukes and even lowely counts and the same for any pagan nation. U can choose a starting date from around 790ad till maybe 14th century. Even crusader kingdoms etc etc. Every time i hear your videos i cant help but think youd love that game specifically.

47:15 well it worked at Antioch, so it's not really that crazy. It seems like they would often avoid pitched battles because they could be absolutely decisive. Antioch, Ascalon, and even Hattin are good examples. Though I would say it was an especially effective use of Shock Cavalry like the Norman Knights and Men at Arms. Remember Saladin tugging at his beard during Hattin? That's probably because he knew that the Crusader cavalry could turn a losing battle into total victory with a single charge. like what happened at Montgisard.

Do we know if the Normans were using Calvary destrier horse conrois formations as in the Templars 12th century in the Holy Lands? I'm kinda thinking maybe not but it could be where the Arabs learnt to counter with light cavalry mounted on faster smaller mares not to engage head on with a Norman Cavalry charge. Thank you.

Headline: "Varadkar launches plan to increase diversity in education" Independent, 2 Nov 2019 At the launch, Mr Varadkar was asked about concerns flagged by geography teachers in a recent open letter after the subject was dropped as a core subject in the Junior Cert cycle. “More broadly, what we’re trying to do by modernising and reforming the Junior Cert and Senior Cert cycle is to move away from traditional subjects to a system of long courses and short courses, for subjects like well-being or climate change, for example.

The historian "Szabolcs de Vajay" list Fressende as the daughter of Richard I, 'the Fearless', Duke of Normandy. There is NO evidence that he had a daughter called Fressenda/Fredesende. Though, Tancred , Fressenda and 12 of their Sons with Hospes are portrayed in the scene ALTA VILLA on the Tapisserie de Bayeux so it's a possibility that she could be.
