First time hearing this song and I’m in tears… the message, the beauty… it’s haunting. As a single mom and cancer survivor, this also hits on multiple levels. Had I been diagnosed 8 years earlier, I wouldn’t have survived. But I was lucky to have the right “cocktail” available. I was 21 when Freddie passed and it was- and still is- such a huge loss 💛

Freddie’s death and the beginning of the fight against AIDS. Roger is a man of deep compassion!💛
@terrilabeth73663 жыл бұрын
Roger Taylor is brilliant. Another part of this comes from the time it was written, the AIDS crisis, HIV leading up to AIDS. We were losing so many, so, so many, and we did go through a period of people not being able to afford the medicine, it was a crisis, and it lasted for what seemed like forever. From the first I heard of it until we had the medicine, it was YEARS, and then we all went through the thing of can you afford this cocktail to hopefully extend your life and then save your life. It was honestly heartbreaking. It was also not a very nice time amongst people, so judgemental, so critical, of a lifestyle choice. That has also taken us years to work through and we still have a ways to go unfortunately. It is why Freddie waited until the night before he died to announce he had AIDS. And he was still surrounded by press, constant speculation, it just made the entire thing more heartbreaking. And he captures that moment, long moment in time perfectly in this song. You can hear the pain, feel the pain. I have long admired the remaining members of Queen by sticking by Freddie, this cannot be said enough, during a time when people were just not nice about it. It speaks to who they are as people, their character, their belief systems. It doesn’t matter who you are, who you choose to love, you are still my friend and you always will be my friend. It is a lesson we all need to learn. ❤️ Roger

Very heartfelt. I watched Roger singing this Live. He says this song is dedicated to Freddie. And at the end, you can see how Roger tries not to cry... We have to remember Freddie and Roger lived together and ran a Market stall together before Queen. They were the naughty boys..the fun lovers.. they were proper buddies and all of Queen were a family. I can only imagine how the boys and Freddie's close friends still feel daily. Brian and Roger say they think of Freddie every day. Freddie was the life and soul that had an aura about him..everyone gravitated to him..he was a magnet. The most kind and generous guy according to all those that knew him. Not to forget the creative genius in music, with composition, song writing and production. There is no doubt Freddie was born to do what he did. A super nova.

Thank you my dear friend Hap for reacting to Say It’s True. Yes, it is a song of true love towards Freddie, they, Roger and Freddie, we’re closer than brothers! And no Roger didn’t play the guitar in this song he sang and played maracas. There is another video of this showing him signing with his band and I think his voice is even more beautiful! The first time I heard this I was in tears! Our time on earth is very short Freddie’s was shorter than most. The cocktails for life were beginning to be discovered shortly after he passed and we do have so many now but as Roger said so many can’t afford! This song really pulls at your heart and I could tell by watching your face it pulled at yours. Thank you again for doing your emotional reaction and playing this gorgeous song. Roger is so talented. Jeff Beck plays guitar on this track so that explains the amazing guitar work. This was only the third take on this song which is surprising since Beck is such a perfectionist it can take forever to get his parts to the level he will accept on a recording. Roger is also an excellent guitar player, by the way. Oh My!!...those high notes. Though this song is one of sorrow, it also has a peaceful and soothing quality to it. This is a beautiful song, thank you for reacting to it.

Wow. Pretty sure this is now officially my favorite track from Roger. As you said, the love and grief is so palpable and beautiful. And the song is just *expertly* crafted, too. That phrase "magic cocktails for lives" referencing the gamechanger of the AIDS triple cocktail and that change from the denial of the line "can't be happening to me" to the pleading "could be happening to me" is just so good. As a poet, I've got to fully admit to being jealous of both the emotion and technical skill here. An absolutely great tribute for Nelson Mandela, Freddie, and all the victims of the AIDS epidemic.

Thank you for reacting to this passionate song by Roger Taylor. He certainly wrote some fine songs. About "the size of the crime," part of the crime also was how the world ignored AIDS early on. Too many people just tried to sweep it under the rug or dismiss it as something that was seen as happening to a particular group of marginalized and sometimes despised men. That attitude was reflected even in some of the derogatory names they called the disease. Even some heads of state, such a Ronald Regan, dismissed it as inconsequential and not a concern worth the expenditure of research money. Yes, a big part of the crime. When I die I'll have my kids ask friends to make donations to the Mercury Phoenix Trust rather than send flowers.

Roger’s solo work is fascinating to go through as he ages. This is the guy who tried to refuse to sing the line “I’m happy at home” for You’re My Best Friend, and fought tooth and nail to get Dreamer’s Ball off the album Jazz, because he thought they were too soppy and cheesy. But then later in life, he writes some of the most beautiful, emotional songs like this one, Small, Sunny Day, Be My Gal, Smile, and the most calming song ever recorded IMO, Happiness?

Roger must ache so deeply in his heart knowing shortly after Freddie decided to stop taking any recommended meds to stave off the progression of his disease, medical discoveries began to do just that, it was little more than a year or 2 if I recall correctly, because I think of it constantly... "if only" This song is Roger's grief expressed thru his usual instruments, his music & his beautiful voice. The wailing guitar is almost a substitute for his tears that must occur in his private moments thinking of his lost brother Freddie. The stars on the screen ✨ as Hap points out, are such a reminder of our own mortality as well as Freddie's. This entire song is a work of art in so many ways. I just got a news article pop up on my cellphone last week how Roger found out the huge 20 foot high bronze statue of Freddie, previously in front of the theater for years where the musical ( "Time" ?) about Queen was , has been long hidden away in some building basement. He was so annoyed that he is presently fighting for a "property variance " permit to allow this very larger than normal 'object' as the town of Surrey calls it, to be installed on his private property in the yard of his home in Surrey. It may have been done by now, I can't seem to get any updated info. BUT HOW SWEET IS THAT? Knowing it's Roger, I know he'll not give up, this is too personal for him. If anyone knows anything please reply to my comment, surely we would all love to see him get the permit.
@susancooper31113 жыл бұрын
@Ker thanx for the input, but are we positive it is that particular statue that's been there quite awhile? I know about that one but he talked about a 20 footer or so in a RECENT request for a permit due to the town needing to approve it for Surrey. The comment about Freddie would have thought it too small makes me think it must already be the one from in front of the theater & found in a basement which would have outraged Roger for certain ! . But the news that popped up was very current .I knew he had "a statue" of Freddie all along, then oddly I read about his trying recently for approval so that would mean a different one?. I thought the one he's had for years was something different in the pose. Anyone have any idea how to solve this puzzle?. Im a Virgo so it will drive me nuts ☺ Does anyone know absolutely not guessing? I sure don't. I do have Peter Hince's email but I don't think from what he is involved in now that he's even in touch with Roger or Brian. And off topic, have any of you seen P. Hince's photography or rather his magnificent artwork with his cameras? Not the photos of Queen or other people but rather his incredibly imaginative landscapes & underwater artistic work? It is beautifully inspired & so original. That's why he tried to quit Queen before the last few concerts but Freddie asked him to please just finish the last with him. Peter's dream came true too, always wanted to be a professional photographer. I'm so happy for him, what a lovely man he is, so funny & such s polite gentleman. I read his book twice ...it was so well written & told of HIS EXPERIENCES with Freddie that no one else would be able to... he's articulate,, honest & sometimes hilarious 🤣 . But above all, he had such respect for him, calling him a genius & the fond memory of his last meeting with Freddie. Anyway, anyone know the answer for sure about the statue/statues?

@Ker ok, I just Google "Is Roger Taylor seeking permit in 2021 to install statue on his property in Surrey. It came back with many current newspapers dated April 8, 2021 or within 2 weeks of that, that he is CURRENTLY seeking the permit for the Statue not outside the theater for the musical "TIME' that Freddie was in but fir a statue that came from the OTHER THEATER where the musical WE WILL ROCK YOU was for many years. Either there were 2 statues or he never got the permit for it & they caught up with him since he's also adding a new pool house design . I'm more confused now than I was to begin with ! Just some of u Google referring specifically to getting a permit in 2021 for a statue & redesigned pool & new poolhouse... there's alot of April 2021 newspapers writing about it 🤨 . Hey, wait...doesn't this emoji look just like HAP when he often raises one eyebrow quizzically when he's questioning something in some of his Queen reactions? I always love when he does that, he looks so cute & I wonder does he even realize he does it ? HA ! Who knew there's a HAP emoji !! I think he should engrave it on some of his merch ! Ok. So please go Google all the Roger / Statue. April 2021 newspapers articles that just came out. Are there 2 statues??

Damn, I never heard this track before. I was going to ask if this was written before or after old friends. I’m guessing now it was before, Bc there’s anger in his lyrics. The whole cost of care and help Roger sings of is interesting considering where we are today 🤷♀️ He said in some interview that he felt he couldn’t function for 5ish years after Freddie’s death.

Certainly Roger must be thinking about Freddie as he wrote and sings this but it is also more broadly about the aids epidemic and the unnecessary loss of lives.This was first written for the Nelson Mandela aids charity. Although "cocktails for life" have been available since the 90s that allow people with aids to live full lives, people around the world, and in Africa especially, are dying everyday because they cannot pay for them - the pharmaceutical companies that own the rights to the medicine set the price. This is what he is referring to when he says "the size of the crime" and he's trying to bring awareness that aids could happen to any one of us -"it could happen to me." Just like the COVID vaccine is being made available to everyone around the world (so far), this could be the case for the drugs that combat aids but unbelievably, after 30 years, it still has not happened. Brian May said one in an interview that Roger Taylor is the Peter Pan of rock - he has songs against politicians, domestic abuse, and other social issues. He said in an interview that at this point in his career he feels he has a platform to comment on important matters. Love this song, love his voice, and love his social commitment to the world. Thanks you for doing this song, Hap.
