Interesting take & view on the production of that album, Roger - very... songwriter-ish, so to speak. Totally understand what you mean, but to me ans for my taste, the production of The Final Cut is flawless. From a Floydian sonic history standpoint, despite missing Rick's legendary keyboard work it sounds like the culmination of many things and trends the band outlined or pioneered: it's ambiental, immersive, startling, touching, emotional, engaging, outspoken, political and personal and relatable. And it sounds HUGE. The drums and guitar solos in "Fletcher Memorial Home" and "The Final Cut" are thunderously powerful, like an oversized rhino breaking down the Hoover dam. And those parts you mention, in "Your Possible Pasts", are what I play in the studio to explain the power of dynamics in rock... or to startle the unwary passenger in my car. 💥👌🏼

The final cut sounds like Roger's first solo album with the assistance of Gilmour and Mason. Sorry, but there is no real Pink Floyd sound to me without Wright's iconic and unique keyboard play, whether he was writing songs or not. Brought so much sensitivity and texture to the sound. However when he did (like his solo work) I think it was also remarkable.

@@solarwalkman It was originally conceived as a double album... which means there are probably tracks in the can which have never been released. As odd as it may be for some, at aged 17 I heard The Final Cut album and it became my favourite Pink Floyd record over many years thereafter. To this day, it's my go-to record whenever I add a new bit of kit or make some other change to my audio setup, as I know and love every moment of that record. It's a stunning album, and it blew the bloody doors off the possibilities that a rock album could be. At the risk of sounding parochial here, it's just about the last of the great English rock albums, and it talks about my homeland in an unshowy but passionate way that I've never heard captured before or since. I've remained a fan particularly of Roger ever since then, including his version of Pink Floyd, which is the definitive one if the category is outstanding english rock bands, and own all the albums (including one of the mega-set The Wall copies limited to 1500) and have attended at least once to a concert on each of his tours ever since - including Ca Ira which I travelled to Poznan for. So I hope that The Final Cut stays pretty much the same!! I personally think that Animals is ripe for reexamination - there's much on there that could be added to lyrically, as well as being thematically updated, and I can find some of the musical longueurs at times a little boring.
@JTCurtisMusic Жыл бұрын
I actually agree with Roger on this one (I did a whole review of The Final Cut). I think it had the potential to be a good album and I certainly appreciate the lyrical content speaking for WWII veterans but yeah obviously with Rick gone and tensions between the band, it made it difficult to capture the vibe heard on all their 70s records.

I can't stand to have negativity be the top response here. The Final Cut is an emotional masterpiece. The writing is some of the most personal Roger has ever done, yet the album catches h e double hockey sticks because of all the behind the scenes stuff that shouldn't really matter. It contains the last line Pink Floyd ever produced together and maybe the most powerful. Ashes and Diamonds. Foe and Friend. We were all equal, in the end. It is so on purpose from top to bottom. The dissolution of childhood friendship. It is a goodbye letter to us and to his father. I've never understood the hate it gets.

There's really something to be said here, Roger. There's a newer band called Larkin Poe that plays stripped down versions of rock classics and their own original songs usually with an acoustic guitar, lap steel guitar (sometimes a dobro is substituted), and vocals only. They've played a cover of Wish You Were Here this way on KZbin. The lyrics are more meaningful and the emotions are deeper this way. I wish you and your family a Happy Christmas. 👍💖🎸😎

Roger, you need to know when to put down the pencil. Star Wars didn't need to have CGI dewbacks to 'fix it'. Final Cut is a masterpiece and still one of my favorite albums of all time. You're too close to it and the industry. It came out at a time when CDs and digital media were new and the dynamic range was part of the experience. It WASN'T one level of loudness. That range allowed it to go from melancholy to rage and back. I still sweat through the end of Hero's Return and down into the subtlety of Gunner's Dream: "a place to stay, enough to eat..." Listening to it now. It's perfect.
