Shirley Horn doesn't sing. Her soul does. I worship this woman.

I saw her at the Hollywood Bowl years ago and her phrasing and hesitation was amazing. I sat there and watched 18,000 people in absolute silence leaning forward in their seats as they waited on her next vocal phrase. Simply amazing.

Oh my Ann You’re on the pulse of her performance. Right in the moment !!!! Her soul does sing ALWAYS 💖

I don't understand how I am supposed to listen to this and then go do something. It takes an hour, at least, to get back on the planet.

Ron, Your performance, as usual, was superb as your rhythm added so much to the feeling and warmth that exuded from Shirley and all of the experts that supported her.

Wow. What a powerful and restrained ensemble. This arrangement is brutally beautiful

Unlike most singers (who usually want to leave a big mark on every song they sing) Shirley uses her voice as another instrument in ensemble performances. Perhaps it is because she also plays piano in the session, so she is much more in touch with what is going on in the musical structure. Her distinctive phrasing (piano and voice) are without match.

Most singers today...especially the younger generations....offer their singing resume' on every song they sing. It's somewhat of a sign of musical immaturity, as they are attempting to prove they "can really sing". Shirley, on the other hand, had nothing to prove, as she was one of the greats.

And still leaves a huge mark with her voice and delicate, musical vocal phrasing blended magnificently with her brilliant, warm, exquisite cords, and heart piercing notes on the piano as well as the other players around her, whether it's a trio, an orchestra or anything in between. She herself is a musical group surrounded by one.

У меня есть кассета VHS этого концерта. В конце появляется сам маэстро Том Жобим и несколько его песен поёт Гал Коста. Запись сделана за несколько месяцев до смерти Жобима.

Still, I would prefer a version which was recorded with her trio. There's something unnatural in electric piano for me and disturbing in other additional instruments.
