Thank you for your video. You did two things a lot of others do not. Firstly, you showed your actual water level relative to the felt membrane. That is very helpful to me as I am at that exact stage and as a result will be elevating my drain line ever so slightly prior to adding soil. Secondly, I really appreciate the follow up segment at the end of your growing season. It’s really nice to see actual results from a wicking bed. Thanks again.

Somehow I luckily found your video... I watch and live for my favorite woodworkers and craftsmen yet you built the best garden bed that I’ve seen so far 👏🏽 You came up with a brilliant way to not only properly and efficiently grow a veggi garden without wasting water, you more importantly (to me) solved a very common issue when building outdoor structures of any kind with wood and especially wood built garden beds and that is limiting the need to rebuild or repair every few years once the wood rots! I think this is brilliant and will be sharing with everyone ik who gardens because this is a huge money saver initially but also long term as well considering limited wood contact to water 👍🏼👍🏼 Thank you for sharing the full build

Am in the process. Watched MANY videos. Yours is the best. I live on a hill, to put it mildly. Would need a lot of soil to level. So I put 2 pallets down. Leveled them. Then put the containers and frames on the pallets. Am now moving on to the wood trim. I bought used fencing panels for this (5 feet of 6 foot panels for $5 each). you need a column of soil that goes to the bottom of the reservoir otherwise you loose the wicking effect after the water drops below the soil contact. Also the roots do not wick the water up it is the medium just like a piece of T shirt will wick up water. Please look at other that are doing this. If you do this way you will be disappointed

Hi Roger , just found your channel and really like it. As a complete amateur fishermen just curious about your Pilchards as bait. So when you buy a frozen pack from the local servo of fish shop what do you do next be frost some? Do you treat the pilchards in any way such as salt them. Do you break off a chunk to go fishing with and leave the rest of the block frozen and in the freezer. Have learn heaps Roger and thanks for the great tips.
@RogerOsborneFishing3 жыл бұрын
Hi Steven, just saw your comment. If you drop a block of pilchards several times on to a concrete floor or driveway they will begin to break apart. I generally don't take a whole block with me but just what I think that I need for that particular fishing trip. That way your bait is kept in best condition. Cheers.

My wicking bed leaks even though I put sealant in. And to make matter worse all my veggies are in, so bit of dilemma as to how to manage my water management issue. Hi Roger - as you don’t have wicking towers as such how does the water get transferred from amongst the pebbles through the echo cloth into the soil, especially when the water level drops a few inches? 2nd question: as the water resides amongst the pebbles is the coiled drainage piping at the bottom not superfluous? Many thanks!

Hey mate quick question im about to start building my wicking beds one problem ive noticed is the drain pipe not handling a large downpour of rain and flooding the bed I was thinking of making the drain pipe out of 100mm pipe and having the lower bit of the 100mm pipe set at the correct height for overflow and using small amount of rock wrapped in geo fab around the pipe and using sand as the wicking material do you think this would work cheers

@RogerOsborneFishing3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tanya, The tap in the center of one half of the IBC would be at the base which is on the ground and not accessible once filled. The tap needs to be at the height of water level that you want to maintain. It needs to be on the side.

Hello there. I am in the processing of building a wicking bed. I am wondering what material is the best for the water reservoir? Sand or rock? I looked at getting lava rock and it is hard to find or verrrry expense. Please advise as I want to make the bed correct the first time. The bed is 8x4
@Follower_of_The_Word Жыл бұрын
I've built several wicking beds but I don't understand how yours will be able to wick water when the water level drops below the top of your gravel layer. You need a finer medium, such as sand in contact with the soil layer and bottom of your reservoir. Gravel will not wick moisture.

How long does the soil last? Do you change it yearly or just add nutrients every year?
@RogerOsborneFishing Жыл бұрын
The soil gradually compacts down and the plants use the nutrients. After each crop I add more organic material as necessary, like compost, seaweed, manure etc. You also need to rotate crops depending on what you are growing.
