Howdy All! Here's my YT highlight video of my latest Step by Step drum tuning lesson "PowerTone/UV2 TomTuning Tutorial" in which I take you STEP BY STEP from ground to sound through three great tom tuning intervals for a 12"/14" tom setup while maintaining a Perfect 4th interval BETWEEN the toms at all tunings.
Please stream the full lesson at
www.kennysharr...
as streaming the lesson helps to support my YT Channel, AND gives you a wicked set of tuning skills to boot. In addition you will find lessons for Tuning the 20" PowerTone Bass Drum to 4 great sounds:
www.kennysharr...
as well as for tuning the 8 lug 6.5" x 14" PowerTone snare drum in this video to 7 great tunings:
www.kennysharr...
I cannot state enough how much fun I had making this review, demo, & tuning tutorial video featuring the newly re-issued Rogers PowerTone Drum Set in the 12″ x 20″ Bass Drum, 14″ x 14″ Floor Tom, & 7″ x 12″ Tom Shell Pack. What an incredible sounding, & easy to tune set of drums. The hardware, & build on this kit is absolutely meticulous. The new Ultra-Matic Low Mass Tom mount (which works with old Rogers mounts) allowed this tom to sustain forever. No choking. The two tone Gold/Silver sparkle Lacquer Finish is absolutely eye-popping, & the interior stain makes these drums as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside.
What really blew me away about these drums was the sound. Deep, thick, rich, and powerful due to the 5 ply shells (w/ 2ply rerings), & the unique laminating process they used to make a classic design take on a more modern sound. Hence you get all the tone, power, & heft of the classic PowerTone Kits of the late 60's/early 70's, but with a bit more of a modern punch. Even with this big sound, they are still amazing for Jazz drumming as well as Rock, Country, Blues, & R & B music.
What brought the sound to life for me was being able to easily tune through 3 great intervals for the toms to create 3 unique sounds that still had the incredible tone of these drums at the forefront. Especially as I went with a bit higher tunings on these toms to increase the attack/presence of the toms. Although I will say by using my fave 2 ply tom head on the market, Evans' UV2, I had more than enough body, & attack to go around.
Although I tune the kick, & snare in other videos, I will say both drums are simply incredible. The 20" has the body, and depth of tone that you get in a 22" Bass Drum, but with the attack, & punch of a 20" bass drum. Absolutely SICK KICK. The snare drum sounds equally as amazing over a broad range of tunings making it an almost obligatory addition if you are thinking about getting this kit. Dude chugged a beer then a cup of coffee right before this video started. Great vid and nice sounding drums😊. My first kit was a Rogers big R in 1985.

Bahahaha alas no (although maybe some coffee). I had actually just finished back to back runs with Dead & Co , and The Decemberists so I was exhausted, and a little out of practice in terms of my diction 🤣🤣🤣 (I have a problem with R’s when I’m tired). Add that I was just getting over Covid, 🤣🤣🤣but the kit came in so boom. Video. Thank you for watching, and commenting. 🤘🏻

Jeff they really are amazing sounding, well built drums. The finish is gorgeous, and the low mass tom mount is awesome. Especially as it didn’t choke the Tom at all. 🤗🤗🤗🥁🥁🥁Thank you so much for the kind words, for watching, and for commenting. You asked me to dig, and I dug. Beautiful tones! All of them usable in the right context. Knowledge is power. I prefer the reso a perfect 4th higher myself, but the house kit at my blues venue gets a minor 3rd higher because that's what the room and context tells me. I got there because of your videos and support, Kenny! I'm not quite sure how to tune to a major 3rd higher on the resos. For perfect 4ths, I tune the reso to the fundamental pitch that I want, then bring the batter up to achieve it. It's never a perfect perfect 4th, but close. Same when I tune the reso a half step below the desired fundamental note. I bring the batter heads up and it seems to be around or slightly less than a minor 3rd. Again, my goal is to achieve that fundamental note. This always me to get results quickly with any tom and any head combo. The tom pitches all turn out exactly where I want them in relationship to each other. Yes, I can, and sometimes do, tune for sound instead of exact notes. What's the formula for a major 3rd? I can only do the minor 3rd-ish and perfect 4th-ish very well. Thanks!

Man thank so much for the kind words, for watching, and for trying these intervals. Much less you found them so useful. The note is relative, but the interval is so important. Just FYI the step by step lesson for this vid is streaming at KennySharretts.com. For less than the price of a drum lesson at your local GC I walk you step by step through all the Tom tunings in this vid so you CAN find a minor, a major 3rd, and a perfect 4th. The method I use makes it SUPER easy to get your tunings EXACTLY where you want them. You can stream at thus link as it will help you hone your tuning skills to another level, and will help to support my channel. www.kennysharretts.com/ppv-only-page

I definitely have an interest in the new Rogers Powertone Champagne Sparkle kit. I wish there more videos with the heads that come on the kit. When you play the small tom it seems to have a fair amount of wiggle. The double tom mount might be a little more sturdy. I am interested on attaching a clamp and cymbal arm to the tom mount for a smaller crash cymbal. Lots of things to think about but these drums do sound good.

Man thank you so much for the kind words. These drums sound amazing to me so I’m glad you like them too. The wiggle is not that noticeable when playing, but I saw it too when editing. The low mass mount, however, allows that Tom to SIIIIIING!!! Thank you for watching 🙏

One day soon I will gather a kit that size, and do my best. In the Ochletree video on the matter the tuning intervals were pretty random. One perfect 4th for sure. A 4 piece kit with a 20” bass is a great way to get sound playability and portability. I have played other larger size kits but this size kit is the easiest to play.

What is the difference between the Cleveland and the PowerTone? Why is there a $1000 difference on a 3 piece kit? Thanks.
@KennySharretts
@KennySharretts Жыл бұрын
I'm glad you asked that question. The main differnces are as follows - The PowerTone has a 45 degree bearing edge allowing for a wide tuning range, and are assembled overseas. The Cleveland is assembled in America by Bill Detamore, and the shells have Hand Cut Edges with a 45 Degree Inside Cut and a Slight Round-Over Counter Cut - The Cleveland is 5 solid plies where as the PowerTone is laminate plys. This along with the differences in bearing edges means the Clevelands have a deeper fundamental tone. IE "they play a size up". The PowerTone has a bit brighter attack, but IMHO they also play size up as the 5 ply construction adds a bit of heft to these PowerTone Toms.I absolutely love this kit. Otherwise the hardware, hoops, finishes, etc. are the same. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching, and commenting. As I'm telling everyone, Super Thanks for tipping is now available on my vids to help support my channel.
