It's really impressive what Oda managed to pull off with Egghead. I could easily imagine someone else making a poorly written version where the Vegapunk memory-wipe reveal came across as poor writing, or the Kuma flashback was either too long or too short, or the giant robot/golem was a deus ex machina, or Bonney's Nika form felt too out of left field, etc. Somehow Oda managed to navigate his way through all those potentially eyeroll inducing moments and craft a story that's masterful in how it's paced, and still progresses the plot and sets up for the future. Absolutely brilliant! As for where I'd rank it for post-timeskip arcs, I'd definitely rank it above Dressrossa, Wano, and the entire Whole Cake saga. Definitely above Fishman (while I do have an appreciation for Fishman Island and how it handles delicate topics, after rereading it I noticed it still has the low points I remembered it having). It's above Punk Hazard for sure. Yeah I think I agree Egghead is the best post-timeskip arc so far. Depending on how things go it may end up being my most fondly remembered post-timeskip arc of One Piece when all is said and done. Bravo Oda!

Oda has clearly tightened up the grip on the one piece narative as a whole and that is really the reason the pacing of egghead just feels so perfect and also very dense in lore and developments. It really is the perfect blend of good character writing with satisfying pay off. Even that final Chapter, solidifed that Vegapunk actually came out the Winner in the end so he was always a prodegal genius, making his moves, one chess piece at a time, always a few steps ahead of the world government.

Such a great arc. I think we may have taken some things for granted week to week reading Egghead, but each arc is a complete story in itself when read all together. I recommend everyone to reread arcs fully after an arc is done, especially if youre into talking about the story or theorizing. The flow of events feel very different from chapter to chapter when it is week to week and Oda definitely outlines his story as a whole instead of trying to figure out what to put on the page week to week. Egghead is definitely a set-up arc, but it’s one of the best set up arcs I’ve ever seen in any story. What I love about this arc is that it is so contained in a space and each event we go to within the story is also contained within itself. Arcs like Dressrosa, Whole Cake, and Wano are all great arcs, but they’re so full of characters and puzzle pieces that it can be a lot to keep track of. For Egghead, the entire “Vegapunk” portion of the arc is isolated from everything else happening in the arc. Then when we go into a flashback, to the reverie, or one of the fights going on in other places, it doesnt take away from what is happening in the main story. Marineford was actually pretty similar in that sense. Egghead has a ton of big moments, some we were expecting at some point (like Garp and Shanks fighting) and some we weren’t expecting (like Stussy revealing herself), but there are A LOT of moments. For those that value these bigger moments, it’s probably close to the top arc of the series. It gave me everything I want from the story in terms of things happening, but as a completed story as a whole, it still feels like a set up arc to me and its hard to me personally to value set up arcs more than conclusive arcs. I love Impel Down, but comparing it to Marineford is difficult because it’s a conclusive arc.

I absolutely agree that Egghead is one of if not the best arc post time skip but I do just have one criticism: One of Egghead’s greatest strengths is its ability to move along at a fantastic pace while tying together narrative threads and weaving them together with whole new ones, resting firmly on the foundation of Oda’s unparalleled world building and character writing So many things happen, it’s hard to even remember that before this arc Vegapunk was a name on a page and not a person we really know inside and out. Kuma was a mysterious but distant figure, and now he’s tragically one of the best and most beloved father figures in the whole story. The gorosei, the god knights, the reverie, god valley - on and on and on But even though all of that plot and detail and answers and new questions and hype is GREAT - it does mean we spent less time on our core crew Don’t get me wrong. I loved every bit of Kuma and Bonney. React piece could’ve gone for another month and I would’ve lapped up every beloved character cameo But the contrast of early Elbaf has been a refreshing one with some of those classic core crew moments, slowing down from THE WORLD IS SINKING to just play pirate adventure with our friends

I started reading one piece when gear 5 blew up and I caught up to the manga a little before kuma’s flashback. As someone who was extremely hesitant on starting this series for literally 7 years just because of how long it was I’m glad I started reading when I did. Egghead was such a phenomenal arc to read weekly and it was made all the better reading it with you Roger. I’ve been following you since the Nintendo switch’s launch and I’d always see your one piece reactions on my feed and I’m glad to finally be able to be a part of that. Egghead is definitely my favorite post timeskip arc and this reading it weekly is something I’ll never forget. The reveals were crazy, the twists and turns the story developments everything was done phenomenally. I can’t wait to see how Elbaf continues on and I can’t wait to tune in to more streams and see your thoughts and opinions in future one piece videos!

Egghead is definitely one of my favorite arcs in One Piece. My favorite part of this arc was the Kuma flashback. I’m a sucker for emotional moments. Kuma’s been through a lot throughout his life, and yet, he’s one of the kindest people ever in One Piece. This flashback made him one of my all time favorite characters. For me i was one of those fans who caught up when gear 5 was happening and it was hype to see gear 5 in the anime weekly but it was hard to wait for episode week to week but one day i was scrolling through tik tok and i saw some drawings that said one piece spoilers i did not know what manga is at that time and i was surprised so i go to you tube and searched one piece manga and it gave me this amazing channel that called " that one piece take " through them i was introduced to this beautiful one piece you tube communities and i ve gone back watched all there reaction to all one piece hype chapters and watched the previous reveries b/c of this egg head was special to me i ll give it 9/ 10

Egghead brought back that adventurous feel to One Piece that was unfortunately missing post Punk Hazard when we had to go through the Yonkou Saga, while also delivering on a LOT of BIG answers we have been waiting years for. Absolute Peak It is insane that One Piece just gets better as time goes on while other series have already ended or fallen off a cliff like MHA or JJK etc. One Piece is still King.

I honestly feel Wano's underrated by the people who misunderstand it & don't prefer subtext & thematic focus. Aleczandxr's Wano reviews explain my feelings perfectly, as does his Kaido video. IRC it's his favorite OP arc & one of mine for sure. Egghead's still peak though.

I guess I gotta be the one with the hot take. 0:47-3:22 I'm glad you clarified all of that, and given that, your thoughts make perfect sense. For me, I'm an anime watcher, and I only started One Piece and caught up because of the hype around Wano, and caught up right before episode 1015, and watched it weekly from there, and I started reading the manga weekly (which is a big deal for me because it's not a medium I generally care for) because of the hype around Kuma'a flashback. I'll give you that this arc is full of god-tier moments. Shanks vs Kid is one of the best one-shot kills I've ever seen in anything ever, the Gorosei actually _doing_ something for the first time, the reveal that Joy Boy is the first pirate ever is one of the most epic and mythic reveals ever that still sends a chill down my spine from how good it is, the Kuma flashback is the best flashback I've ever seen in anything ever, and it makes me well up just thinking about it, and the best line in all of One Piece: "I'm 100x stronger than I was 2 years ago!" Badass. However, for me, these god-tier epic moments, as god-tier as they are, the sum isn't greater than the whole to me, and that's why it's nowhere near my favorite arc post-timeskip, much less in all of One Piece. To me, it's just a good arc. What brings it down for me is that it's so plot-heavy and lore-heavy that it feels like it's not even about the Straw Hats anymore. Also, the jumping around just makes the arc not feel cohesive to me. Every arc in the time skip has only gotten bigger and bigger, and this is the first arc to me where I felt it feeling _too_ big. Say what you will about Dressrosa and Wano, which actually _are_ my favorite arcs post-timeskip, but as big as they are, and as much as they introduced a ton of new characters, at least we weren't doing that _and_ jumping all over the place. It felt like there was actually time to breath and enjoy the journey. Egghead is not an arc I would feel the need to go back to anywhere near as much as Dressrosa and Wano because it's so big and epic, but without much room to breathe, and with even less focus on the Straw Hats than the other post-timeskip arcs. To be clear, I still think Egghead is a good arc, but to me, Dressrosa and Wano capture everything I want in a One Piece arc, and even if the pieces, as big and great as they are, still aren't as god-tier as the ones in Egghead, they sum to a greater whole to me. I understand I'm in the minority, and that no one else is gonna agree with that, but that's just how I feel.

Hey man, i appreciate your input! what you're saying is right but unfortunately the clock is ticking for Oda and One piece since the story has to end, Which saddens me to say but it has been 26 years since it started and as an older fan (2014 is when i caught up) i can definitely feel the fatigue around the fanbase. People don't care as much for side characters such as Rebecca and Tama. They're great and all but as Roger said they don't move the plot as much as what we are given now. If you saw the reaction at the beginning of Elbaf and people complaining about how slow it is where it was strawhats classic moments and they said it's a bad introduction (Oda shutted them up with the latest chapter) . Wou;ld love for One Piece to be One piece we knew and loved but that changed for better or worse. Sorry for the yap

I appreciate that you didn't. One Piece follows a formula: bad guy terrorizes island, Luffy befriends someone trying to fight back, Straw Hats split up and do their own thing, tragic backstory, Straw Hats come together, Luffy beats bad guy, Straw Hats fight the others, party, then leave, and it works for a reason, and it served One Piece well, but after Wano, we might be in a place where that formula isn't gonna work as well anymore, because we're nearing the endgame. Raising the stakes facilitates telling the story in a different way, but the problem with One Piece is that it has gotten so big and unwieldy that it's hard to do that and still bring what made it work so well. That's why I didn't mind splitting the Straw Hats up and focusing on the original 6, and focusing just on them. It feels like Oda is trying to address that problem. However, my only flaw with it is I don't like the idea of making a mystery out of how they ended up on the island, but that's just me. I hope Elbaf is able to keep the hype people had from Egghead, but also bring what made some of those older arcs great, too.

@ Thanks man, as i said the story formula has changed but Oda keeps the core principles around in different shapes (like partying in the ship rather at the island), and regarding how they split up, my advice is let the story progress enough and it’ll pay off (That’s how things usually work) One piece is much better in retrospect and in binge watching. So as i said the constant breaks make it feel dragged out but when rereading it or reading weekly with no breaks it flys by so fast, That’s why Roger appreciated it more in the reread.

For one reason or another, Oda had to delay the Yonko Saga at a mind numbing pace. However, after the Onigashima War its become very apparent to me that everything up to the Kaido fight was prologue. The climax of Egghead was 1111 through 1119. We know that Oda loves his numbers, and this sequence seems planned for a LONG time. After the Fan Letter episode, I'm thinking that One Piece is a global puzzle and someone has to start laying them down. The treasure 'One Piece' in Japanese can also be read as "The Rope Linking All Men" (paraphrased). These numbers are intimately tied together in a sequence that we, the community, are meant to solve.

2:40 as someone who binged the manga and only caught up at the Gorosei appearance in Egghead, I can absolutely confirm this. Whole Cake and Wano were and still are some of my favourite arcs in One Piece ever (Dressrosa otoh was still an interminable slog even when binged) and everything from the start of the Egghead arc to the point of catch-up was a Top 3 arc. However, the moment I started reading weekly is when my enjoyment took a massive nose dive. I started to get really annoyed at the dragged out Vegapunk countdown, the reaction panels and the fake outs, and the frequent IRL breaks made the pacing even worse. That said, I knew from my experience with Whole Cake and Wano that all of that “fluff” is actually important to the story as a whole. Idk if this is controversial, *but I just don’t think the weekly manga format is conducive for a story like One Piece.*

It's just something you have to accept, you either get your generally weekly fix or wait it out to binge an arc. It will never happen but my personal solution is instead of One Piece being weekly it should be released in a volume basis. So you can get a dozen chapters and Oda can really tune the pacing properly and you get a real nice fill of the story.

I think weekly formats in general aren't great for stories, especially long running ones like One Piece. Plus, the weekly release schedule is terrible to the health of the authors, so it would be better if they switched to something less harmful (which would also help writers work on the pacing of their stories more).

This is definitely the best One Piece arc I've read weekly (I've been reading weekly since Fish-Man Island). My only criticisms are the participation of some Straw Hats in the arc, specifically Franky, one of my favorite Straw Hats along with Zoro and Jinbe. He was the Straw Hat, after Luffy, with more screen time, but reading it I didn't get that impression because he didn't influence the direction of the arc much. That's my fear for Elbaph too, that the characters in this arc outweigh the importance of the Straw Hats, especially Usopp, but the first chapters of the arc gave me hope that Oda has a plan for him and for Nami.

Whole Cake is easily my favorite post time skip arc. It captures a lot of what I love about pre time skip One Piece. I think Egghead was solid, but in some ways it just felt like a better version of Punk Hazard. The pacing is better, but it lacked a central charismatic villain, a real sense of adventure, or any of the great crew dynamics that make the series special.

I haven’t reread all of wano since the not all the volumes were out, but up to the raid was really good on the reread. I’ll have to see how the raid goes, now that all the wano volumes are out. For me the fandom(everyone) was the worse part of wano, years of people complaining and fighting with each, I had to step away and read by myself week to week, I ended up enjoying wano more after that. Egghead was really amazing week to week, and a good start to the final saga.

Egghead was amazing. I know some people loat hope for Oda's writing post Wano but i loved Wano so i never lost hope and this arc went beyond expectations. The emotional storytelling, the themes, the action, the lore, the rising tension of Lucci showing up to Kizaru to a Gorosei to ALL the Gorosei it was amazing. There's literally nothing about this arc i thought was bad. Its one of my fav arcs in One Piece, like top 5. Oda cooked.

For me, I think Wano is better when looked at in hindsight. Kaidos style of writing was more subtextual and subtle. I agree with largely of what you were saying about it though. It was unnecessarily long. Egghead really felt like a breath of fresh air from a week to week experience to a full on read. When the anime returns and we get to the flashback its gonna make the world sink with tears.

I had caught up around the beginning of Wano so I had my first experience with weekly chapters during Wano. While Wano was certainly a strain to spend 5 years on I'll never hate on Wano simply because that arc actually brought me back to loving One Piece after I nearly quit the series. Egghead, like Arlong Park and Enis Lobby was an arc that sent my love for One Piece to another level. The reveals just kept getting crazier as I felt the beginning of all the mysterys in the series begin to unravel. The story of Kuma was the most heartbreaking thing I had ever read since Berserk and to top it off Kuma's story coincided with the passing of my Grandfather last year and really helped me grieve at the time. Egghead in short to me was part one of Oda's payback of all the time I invested into this wonderful story.

Wano is my top 1 arc and WCI is my top 5 arc so my trust in Oda never went away. Rather it was at its peak. But I will say egghead was the best paced post timeskip arc for sure. Honestly the beginning of Elbaf was a little oddly paced to me in those 3 chapters in Lego land but I still overall enjoyed it. Egghead is my 3rd favorite arc so not gonna hear many objections from me. Wano will get the same treatment just like dressrosa got in a couple more years and people will give it more praise . this was my first arc i started reading since watching all the episodes when i started watching one piece last year. it never once felt slow like some of the dressrosa and wano episodes did even though i love those arcs alot. from what ive seen it seems like Oda is taking what he learned from wano and using that to make elbaph quicker and and overall more enjoyable but still keeping that spectacle of going into a grand island people have been waiting years to see. its very nice as someone who likes to see the straw hats actually explore and adventure.

I personally think Egghead is the best arc in op so far, including both pre ts and post ts. For me, 1. Egghead 2. Wano 3. Marineford are the top 3 arcs in op so far imo

Egghead obviously has it's flaws (like VP being a huge idiot) but at the same time...Man going from Wano to this felt like Oda decided to take things with a bit more caution and preparation and not just vomiting plotlines to never dive deep into them.

I think there were a few minor nitpicks, but overall yeah it reinstated my confidence in the series after Wano being one of the most disappointing arcs in the series for me. It gives me hope that the final saga is going to stick the landing.

Wano was the arc that broke me. I just couldn't keep reading it because of how overly long it was, at some point i started getting bored to tears. The overall story felt too familiar, the new characters were rather disappointing, especially Yamato. I still don't understand what was the point of that character. With the exception of some really cool moments and mini stories within the arc, i personally consider Wano to be the worst post timeskip arc. It's a little harsh i know, but i just had a very disappointing experience with it.

EggHead was truly an amazing experience as a One Piece reader, and I think that the out of island scenes are mostly responsible. Since Ennies Lobby ended we have been conditioned to want arcs to end JUST to see what's happening outside of islands. So getting to see that through the story arc has made taking in EggHead an experience where we can just chill and properly enjoy however long it lasts, and I hope that's the new format. For what else EggHead brought, which was great, I'm sure this specific thing truly let us enjoy those great moments, and hope that Elbaf+ do the same going forward. (Which I'm sure, will be better than this, Oda is PEAK)

I love how Egghead wasn’t just a strawhat arc but also an arc mainly focused on the whole world like Kuma/Bonney, Garp/Cody, Revolutionaries, and VegaPunk himself. Again it just adds to how alive the world is and how the strawhats aren’t the only main characters

Yeah this was a great aspect to Egghead. I know a lot of people hate when side characters get focus but we got a few really good stories with the side characters this arc. I dont mind if Oda wants to focus on non Strawhats because we tend to get some really good writing so out of it

I liked Egghead in the beginning, but felt it teetered off toward the end. It is frustrating how Oda just can't give us any straight answers, only vague, half-answers. The Elder's ended up being disappointing, being very unthreatening. It really should've just been Saturn there. Vegapunk's plan is very dumb when you think about it. The best part of the arc is of course: Kuma. Great backstory. Overall, I don't think it's the best Post-timeskip arc, but is pretty good.
