It’d be really cool if some achievements in rogue core would award cosmetics in DRG proper. I would’ve love to be able to show off rogue core stuff in the “main game”.

Great interview, lots of interesting questions and answers! Very excited to try out Rogue Core once it'll be done, very glad to hear it will not only be five missions/five minutes. I'd normally be wary about such a thing in games but Ghost Ship has consistently shown themselves to actually understand the concept of player psychology and encouraging cooperative play through their mechanics, so I'm sure they'll figure out a way to make it work.

seems really different to me, resupplies aren't tier graded and have different effects, sharing them is both easy and simple as opposed to deciding who takes a common upgrade and who takes a rare

It might work itself out. In RoR2 if I open a chest and a great item comes out that I really want to take but it works better on my buddy's build or one of us needs that powerspike, we'll give it to them instead.

I find it particularly fascinating the focus of Rogue Core is described as a more roguelite system, since DRG is already following a lot of roguelite systems. The mainline difference it seems is that DRG focuses on meta progression between runs (upgrades, overclocks, all needing resources) versus Rogue Core is focused on the more traditional active progression through the course of the run. This makes me insanely happy; I'm a huge fan of active progression. That said, the variety of missions and locations in DRG will still have me coming back anyway. Two different roguelites with different progression focus, and I couldn't be happier. DRG:Survivor though, hmmm. The meta progression there should have evolved. I feel like Vampire Survivors is being used way too much as a "standard" when it really shouldn't - so many great survivor-centric games came before it with more refined foundational systems. It would be great to see more active progression there, much like Rogue Core is doing. But I digress.

A mutated lootbug elite/miniboss could be interesting. With it showering expenite on death. Having exp tied to a mineral means you can do a loot shower, which is something criminally underused. Destiny for example has its engrams and very rarely makes use of the loot shower that these "physical" rewards enables. It just feels good to see glowy loot fly out of the bad guy.

@@Pepe-pq3om You know how when you kill a lootbug or prospector and they explode and a bunch of minerals fly out? Or when you repair a cargo crate and it sprays minerals everywhere? Or how in Borderlands when you kill a boss it drops guns in a pile on the floor in front of it? That's a loot shower. Its taking the loot that you're going to get from completing the objective or beating the bad guy, and making it a visually interesting reward as it spills out into the world.

the reason that question was brought up is because we did a discord server event where we tried to get the full 10 players to join, we succeeded even if just for a short period

It's largely due to performance. More bugs = less fps. For those that don't have beefy computers can still play high difficulties without lagging out.

stingtails and rockpox can turn things haz 6 pretty quickly imo, even though they are pretty obnoxious

​@@HarbingerOfTruth1While I'm sure that's part of it, the devs said in a Q&A that only 10% or so of the player base consistently plays H5 so they don't want to further split it. If people want more difficulty, they need to look into mods like Hazard 6x2, etc.

perhaps suits could have a toxin in it that kills cave leeches, but it takes a bit of time to trigger so the leech still reduces your health by half (or whatever)? would be a good compromise imo.

The upgrade negotiation phase with the ability to see a hovering cursor sounds decent. Similar to how people select characters in Valorant - hover until everyone is ready to confirm.

a solution to prevent people fighting for upgrades is just to allow everyone to pick their own upgrades - but at the same time that'd require some coordination and randoms are seemingly incapable of that.

24:35 since it looks like DRG is also looking into other roguelikes may i suggest looking into dead cell's "new game+" it works close to hazards in DRG in dead cells every successful run you gain a "boss cell" which can go up to 5, and with each boss cell new enemies new mechanics new areas new items you get the idea 52:05 for the elephant guy, can someone remind DRG as well that ultralisk exists, thats a bug like elephant

MINING is the biggest difference between the 2 games, if DRG improve more on the MINING by adding new minerals and new complicated missions/mechanics then both games will truly go their own way.

​@@explorianguy The current DRG is still heavy combat, mining is just support. The action mining gold, nitrat, bismos in DRG or mining the new mineral in RC are the same, it's pretty straightforward. Both games are heavy combat and soft mining/collecting, the statement "truly go their own way" mean the key to make DRG superior than RC by its own way is mining - the one it potentially is strong at, don't only sink in heavy combat.

How to stop a cave leech from insta-kill? Allow the player to shoot it when you get pulled up. The dwarf should point a gun up and open fire. I don’t know why they can’t in the main game.

The idea of having janky barrels down in the caves that could be used as a risk/reward to either stupidly end your run by it killing you at mach 3, OR sending it to perfectly liquify a horde of bugs sounds great. Maybe if they were explosive barrels, that could be even cooler!

I am a bit disappointed at the long wait for new DRG content and would have rather seen rogue core in the base game DRG but even if I don't end up liking it I don't have any plans to refund it. The devs have shown for years they care about what they are making which is more than a lot of other companies do.

It worries me A LOT that the lead designer of the game answers these questions with either; "We don't know" or a passive "I guess there could be" That is infinitely worse than the one "no comment" because at least no comment hints at him not wanting to spoil something. DRG has a lot of trust with me and others but holy sh*t it does not give me confidence when the guy who's in charge of the design can't even give a straight answer about melee weapons or the most simple of all... Cosmetics. Like I swear to Karl, this dude made it sound like they're having difficultly adding in hats and beards. BEARDS. I'd had honestly rather heard nothing from this guy and have my patience help me wait then get bummed out by this...

hard disagree, the entire point of their open development motto is to give us an extra early look at their projects before they are even fully realized, he doesn't know if there will be melee weapons because they're still hard at work with a bunch of other core gameplay features, the fact that they aren't focusing on cosmetics this early on is a very good thing, it should NEVER in a million years be prioritized unless you're hoping to score a massive profit open development >>> suspend everyone in secrecy as drg updates slow down for over a year

​@@generalpacman6414nah, that's not it. Rogue core development most likely hasn't started since season 3, since by the announcement it was still in pre alpha stage, and they said they decided for it to be standalone like 2 months before the announcement

My main worries is the it will have similar movement mechanics and that the melee system will be as terrible as DRGs, also that the game will have uninteresting upgrades along with a lack of difficulty like DRG. DRG is a fine game but I think it misses out on a lot of fundamentals when it comes to fun combat and movement which makes it a significantly worse game than it should be.

for context: it took them a year to figure out the drg base game, a year to make it early access worthy and two years to push it to 1.0, rogue core hasn't hit its first year yet these "drg is dead" claims are quickly turning into an exaggerated headache

That's what open development is. We're inviting the players in for a behind the scenes of the development even in the early stages where not everything has been figured out. Finding the answers to unknowns is literally what game development is about.

I'd say that the most time consuming parts of game dev are the engine, the art style/lore/story, all that stuff, assets, and tooling required to bring the assets into the engine as well as workflows for producing assets that fit in the game. DRG:RC already has all of that from DRG. Game design isn't time consuming by itself (there's usually what, one full-time game designer working at it, maybe a very small team, and even then a lot of it is playtesting and iteration, as well as community engagement, not hard technical problems), coding the game logic doesn't take as much time either when most of the interacting entities and mechanics are already in the game (RC doesn't need to reinvent shooting a gun or generating a cave). So RC will take significantly less time to develop than DRG. Add to that the fact that GSG itself has grown and has more people to throw at it.
