Britain’s Special Air Service or SAS was the brainchild of Colonel David Stirling. This young, gadabout aristocrat displayed an aimlessness in early life that belied a remarkably strategic mind. Stirling envisioned a small group of elite, well-trained men who could wreak havoc behind enemy lines. The SAS’ remarkable exploits during WWII became the model for many of today’s Special Forces units.
