This movie really put the “Wars” in Star Wars. For the most part, it took itself and the whole Star Wars lore and history very seriously, any humor was dry and not jokey. That’s the vibe I got from Rogue One.

@@DDDiego That's the thing. I don't remember the name, but the director of Empire Strikes Back had an excellent interview a while back, where basically said he "Needed to have humour, but not gags", which is precisely the case with the OT, and ST missed completely.

Outside of a few saga purists, the majority of SW fans rank R1 among the top five films of the franchise. Some (including myself) rank it 4th after the OT. It has a beginning and an ending; serving as a true tie-in prequel to ANH.

I'm still watching your reaction Laurenn..but to answer why Jedah doesn't blow up like in 'A New Hope'..is because they only used a small portion of the Death Star's full power as a test. They ordered them to use only one reactor..instead of all the reactors that come together to destroy a planet.
@richardb6260

It's like when they used it to take out Rebel ships in Return of the Jedi. Alderaan was the first test of it's full destructive power.

To clarify this, I believe there is only a single hyper-matter reactor but they use it to charge the power cells. So like pumping up a bb gun to get more power they ignite the reactor to charge the power cells. I can't remember where but I vaguely remember hearing it mentioned it can take 64 of these charges but don't hold me to that.

The guy who came up with concept, wrote and produced this movie is John Knoll. He not only was the FX supervisor on all three prequels but he won an Oscar for the CGI in Pirates of the Caribbean and is one of the two men (his brother was the other) who originally invented Photoshop. For years together he and his brother Thomas invented and came out with future versions of Photoshop in the early 90s. John went on to the film industry and Thomas continued enhancing Photoshop, but John's name is still on the licensing.

As you can see this is not a spin off as the ending transitions right into "A New Hope", and is essential to the entire plot of that movie which is the basis of the "Star Wars" franchise. It also doesn't take place right after episode 3 which is when the "Obi Wan Kenobi" mini series takes place, just compare the age of Leia. Nice reaction.

At least watch a few before starting one of the new live action streaming shows. The Mandalorian is good in my opinion, but it will be even better if you see (some of) the characters he meets before he does. He meets them much later, after Episode VI ROTJedi. You meet them in Clone Wars when Anakin and Obi-Wan met them, before Luke was born.

Personally, given the circumstances and the fact that the Death Star is already complete, I'd consider Director Krennic a much higher value target of opportunity over Galen Erso. They've already got what they need from Galen, and they can (and do) build more superweapons without him. They'll probably go on just fine without Krennic, as well...but it would be a bigger blow than losing Galen at that point.

The only thing I didn’t understand about this movie was why they started blowing things up on Scarrif when no one even knew they were there. They could have quietly done their espionage, got the plans and left. No one would have known. It wasn’t until they started blowing things up BEFORE their task was done, that anyone knew they were there! They could have all made it out alive?!😳🤦🏻‍♂️

Technically, the deliberate design flaw was a small, little-noticed (and virtually impossible to hit!) exhaust port that led directly to the reactor at the center of the Death Star. If this were not done to sabotage the Death Star, then it would have been an incredibly stupid design choice, even though it was incredibly unlikely to result in its destruction. Luke used the Force, however, to aim his proton torpedoes, both went in, and a short time later the central reactor was hit, resulting in the Death Star getting blown to trillions of pieces. There was no other way for the Rebels to have destroyed it (just way, way too big, armored, and shielded), and even then, they needed someone like Luke to use the Force to get it done, or else all would have been lost. By the way, the second Death Star, undoubtedly with the flaw fixed, was much easier to destroy because it was incomplete at the time (functional, but not entirely finished) and its reactor was exposed (no need for careful, Force-guided aim, just get there and hit it), but of course this was deliberately leaked to the Rebels as bait for a trap. An incredibly strong shield was generated from Endor to protect the Death Star, and it took a nearly hopeless mission with help from the Ewoks to shut that shield down. Once that was done, the second Death Star was doomed, no Force-using pilots needed. Despite the heroism involved in the destruction of both Death Stars, which I don't wish to diminish, I suppose the overarching point is that destroying them was kind of pointless in the long run. The Empire could and would build others, which makes what happened onboard the second Death Star so important. Luke (with help from Vader/Anakin, of course) took out the Emperor, and that's what took the Empire down. Others would rise because there is always evil to fight, but Palpatine had to be taken out before the New Republic could be formed. If that hadn't happened, then he and Vader would have escaped the Death Star and made another one (or something worse!).

Cheruit is not a jedi, but he is (1)VERY force sensitive (2) a believer in the (Jedi) faith (3) not trained in the jedi arts by jedi It's my belief that he's one of those people who are peripheral to the fallen Jedi temple on planet Jedha. I think he fits in in that he's not force sensitive or powerful enough to be a Jedi, but much much force stronger than the average person. That may be why he has to repeat the "I am one with the force," mantra over and over again. A full Jedi "has the force as his ally" and wouldnt need to keep repeating a mantra...he/she would simple BE one with the force. What would you do with a person of middle-ish power? If he was humble enough, someone like that would gladly work AMONG the Jedi: like a librarian assistant. Keeper of crystals. Smaller jobs. And, in his off time, he could study alongside the temple and grow his Force skills. It might be like how some people cant get into the Police Academy, but they end up as security guards or bouncers -- still some kind of peace keeper. Or how some people cant make it to PhD professor/scientist level, but become teaching assistants, lab techs, or still stay within the University setting. hierarchy

Through CGI and good editing, Grand Moff Tarkin (Peter Cushing) Princess Liea, and rebel pilots Gold Leader and Red Leader were all brought back for this movie. This one is by far the best Disney Star Wars movie. To me, it had a better look and feel the episodes 1,2,3 because it doesn’t look like they were more technologically advanced in the past. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Keep the reaction coming. Maybe do the William Shatner Star Trek movies next.

@@Heegaherger What is really baffling is how un-forced Disney's destruction of the Star Wars franchise was. Lucas gave them a treatment for a sequel trilogy, and they ignored it. They had a perfectly good sequel trilogy story in the Hier to the Empire trilogy of novels, and they ignored it. Let's assume that they were too greedy to want to share any money with Lucas or Zahn, but why they hell did they not even outline their own story before filming? Not only have they ruined Star Wars, the way they have done it has preemptively soured everyone on *any* IP they might get their hands on.

Not all "force sensitive" beings are Jedi. The Jedi were a kind of "religious order" (kind of like Jesuits or Buddhist monks) that used the Force for knowledge and defense. The Sith were another such order, more fanatical, that focused on the dark side of the Force and used it to attain power. I like that this movie introduces us to other kinds of "Force users" that are neither Jedi nor Sith, such as Chirrut.

According to the Star Wars role-playing game, she is the single most wanted person (supreme leader) in the Rebel Alliance. They change her location constantly and she is surrounded by a secret service. I think they made small reference to this secret service when the radio operator runs up to her to tell her about the rebel attack on Scarif. As he runs up to her, he is stopped by the guy next to her. I dont think he drew his gun, but he might have been a reference to her personal guard.

"How do they have time for this? Doesn't the planet instantly blow up?" They explain that. Krennic says he is ready to destroy the entire moon, but Tarkin cuts him off saying "The Holy City will be enough for today" for which he orders a "Single Reactor Ignition" implying only one of the many reactors are used in the blast, showing the Death Star's superlaser at its minimum setting, which is still enough to cause that much damage. Also remember in A New Hope, the destruction of Alderaan was the first test of "the full power of this station" and thus the first planet the Death Star would destroy. And at full power, yes, planet go insta-boom

You noticed two CGI characters in this movie that you already knew from Episode 4: A New Hope. Peter Cushing, who played Grand Moff Tarkin, died in 1994 but his character was integral to the development of the Death Star so he was recreated using CGI. Also, Carrie Fisher's character, Princess Leia, was not age appropriate to reprise her role. She passed away shortly after Rogue One was released. CGI was used to recreate her image as she appeared in Episode 4: A New Hope, some 39 years earlier.

I wish we got more scenes like that in the Kenobi series, but maybe we will get a Vader series on Disney+ at some point. I really like how the writers gave a reason for why the Death Star had the weakness. It was always strange that the Empire couldn't be bothered to put a grate over the exhaust port. Almost noone watching this film seems to hear the line stating that they are conducting "a single reactor test firing" of the Death Star's Super laser on Jeda City. The same single reactor power level is used at Scariff. That is why the blasts traveled so much slower and did not destroy the entirety of those two planet.

Hey Lauren, the different vibe in this movie that you can't put your finger on is that "Rogue One" has more of a battleground war vibe to it. This story was created by John Knoll (inventer of Photoshop and VFX lead on a New Hope) in the '90s. They revisited it here, with Disney taking over Lucasfilms. The director had more freedom as to the tone of the movie, since it was not part of the main story. So he ran with it to all our delights.
