Rogue One is really the most adult of all the Star Wars movies. It's interesting to think of how it would have been had it all been thusly oriented. Of course it would probably not have been what it was to me at 13 when it first came out, and it probably wouldn't have been an enormous hit at the time because adult sci-fi at that time was sort of a low point. But, as an adult, I can't help but think how it might have been, and how much more I'd probably enjoy the whole series if had gone this way.

Honestly, this one really reminds me of certain old WW2 movies like "The Guns of Navarrone" or "The Dirty Dozen" where a ragtag combat unit has to go complete a crucial mission and most or all of them die never knowing whether their efforts would bear fruit. "Be careful not to choke on your aspirations" is the moment when Vader should have realized he was a father, because that's such a dad joke. They made a whole-ass movie to explain why the Death Star could be blown up with a single photon torpedo. And it's great.

Based on how Andor Season 1 turned out I think we can say it is probably this good because of the entire team being it (for example Tony Gilroy as Writer and many more), because as I understand it, quite a few people who made Rogue One later made Andor. This is honestly one of the very few big movies where intensive reshoots actually didn't kill the product which is impressive

Now that you have seen Rogue One you need to watch the series "Andor" it is how Cassian Andor comes into the rebellion and it is the best thing that I have seen since "The Empire Strikes Back." Most people dismiss it, but they haven't seen it. If someone sees it, they love with it as it is so well written and acted. People are too harsh on this film. It is a fine movie and fits with the original trilogy in terms of quality much more than other Disney efforts.

I think one of the things Rogue One did best was showing us the Darth Vader that the rest of the Star Wars galaxy fears. The hallway scene shows us why he strikes terror in people's hearts in a more visceral fashion than the OT did. I think that Andor did a similar thing for the Empire as a whole. We get to see more clearly the organization that inspired people to rebel against it. I really enjoy the depth they add to the universe of Star Wars.

I didn't love this the first time I saw it. I was negative towards the concept as I didn't think it was a story that needed to be told and I didn't click with the characters until the third act. On consecutive viewings, partially helped by that I now already liked the characters, it's gotten better and better and I now consider it easily the best Star Wars movie outside the original trilogy. Probably on par with the best if I try to disregard my nostalgia. This movie also gets better by being connected to the show Andor, which is easily the best Star Wars show and probably the best written thing in Star Wars. A more serious and mature take on Star Wars that still manages to feel like it belongs. It's also nice that the properties that is made to fit directly together with the original trilogy is the best outside it. The prequel trilogy never came close to the originals and the sequels just did direct and serious harm to everything that came before (story, characters, in-universe logic, etc) so those are better to never think of again.

Little fun fact about the big space battle over Scarif at the end: there's a few shots where you can see the Ghost flying around. The Ghost is the ship of Hera Syndulla, one of the main characters of Star Wars Rebels, and their base of operations for much of the show. And yeah, that Vader scene at the end is absolutely masterful. Just the breathing, and then the lightsaber, and you just know the fun is over for the rebels. And then he delivers on the hype by just mowing through them. They really make you feel the desperation of those rebel troops. But, you mentioned wanting to watch the shows, so here I go yapping. Andor is absolutely one of the best shows I've ever watched. Slower than most of the others, more focused on characters and story than just fight scenes, though there's some of those as well. Definitely worth seeing. The other live actions shows... less so. Mandalorian is definitely great, but season 3 fell off imo. Still worth a watch for sure (and I just see you already started it, so great). Obi Wan and BoBF shows are really mid, but they made BoBF kinda mandatory to watch, at least the last 2 episodes, before going into Mando season 3. At least they're both short, and the final 2 episodes of both are pretty fun to watch. Haven't seen Ahsoka yet (have to get my family up to speed on all the background). Don't know anything about the upcoming Acolyte show except that it's coming. From the trailer, it doesn't seem like it requires you to watch anything else first. The animated shows are pretty great. Clone Wars has a bunch of shitty episodes, but a lot of great ones too. Rebels can be kinda childish, but it's a solid show overall. Bad Batch has parts where it feels like the story doesn't really progress, but it's still solid fun to watch, and it gets more serious later on. Tales of the Jedi is short, but great. They have their weaknesses, but overall they're solid shows. Well written characters, generally good story (or story arcs in Clone Wars' case, less of an overarching story there), the fights are generally pretty good. Animation is great in the later Clone Wars seasons, as well as in Bad Batch and Tales. And Clone Wars and Rebels are imo kinda mandatory viewing for Ahsoka (hence why I haven't seen it yet, I'm catching my family up on Rebels still). No point in watching a show about Ahsoka and some Rebels characters without seeing Ahsoka's background and character development in Clone Wars, and getting to know the actual Rebels characters. That's what I think at least. As far as the animated shows go, Clone Wars comes first, then Tales of the Jedi, Rebels, and Bad Batch in whatever order you like. Bad Batch has a few callbacks to Rebels, but they're minor enough and explained enough that you don't need to watch Rebels first (at least not so far, final season is still airing). And there's a callback to Bad Batch in Tales, but that one really doesn't matter. More of a easter egg than anything else. Then there's also Star Wars Visions, which is just its own thing. And they recently released a trailer for Tales of the Empire, which definitely needs Mandalorian and (I think) Ahsoka, as well as Clone Wars, to know the characters it will be about. Even if you don't feel like reacting to all of it (Clone Wars and Rebels are pretty long), I do hope you watch them and enjoy them either way. I was always kinda hesitant to watch them, but I'm very happy my brother forced me to watch them with him. I already loved the movies, but I still don't think I would have been as invested in Star Wars if I hadn't watched the animated shows as well.

Haven't checked through the comments, so this has probably been mentioned, but one of the things that really brought that Star Wars feel to it, was the fact that Edwards used unused X-Wing clips from the original Trilogy, just polishing them up a bit, so that the attack on the shield gate felt really authentic.

In fact, this might be a hot take, but if you combine this and "A New Hope" and considered it as one movie, I would rank it ahead of "Empire Strikes Back" as best in the franchise. I absolutely love Rogue One! It is such a brilliantly told and structured story that shows all the variety of people that were part of the Rebel Alliance and all the effort and sacrifices that went into fighting the Empire. It shows that the Rebels were so, so much more than the Hero Characters, but it also highlights the importance of Luke in the original trilogy because it is so clear that the Rebel Alliance has absolutely no answer for Darth Vader, so Luke IS still super important. Also, you should really watch Andor, which is a prequel series (Series 1 is out on Disney+, Series 2 just finished filming and will be out either towards the end of this year or sometime next) around Cassian Andor and how he became involved in the Rebel Alliance (season 1) and 2 will be how he came to be who he is at the start of this movie. The first season is absolutely and positively amazing, visually amazing, phenomenal storytelling.

I'll admit I cheered when the little frigate that could took out two Star Destroyers by ramming them - the Hammerhead-style ships date back 3000 years and were the workhorses of the Old Republic, before corruption and the Sith conspired to disarm them. They ranged from enormous ships bigger than Imperial Star Destroyers to tiny frigates (like seen here), and even a superdreadnought that was bigger than Vader's flagship the Executor.

Rogue One is the best SW movie to come from the House of the Mouse. I highly recommend watching Rogue One immediately. It's the best SW TV series. The movie is a war movie so many characters die that you encounter. What this movie does is expand the universe on what normal people were up to to do to fight the Empire. It wasn't the Jedi at all that started the fight against it. War movies are made to tell incredible acts of brave;ry and dedication in a battle or mission that lead to winning a war. Sure we already know what's going to happen, but if there's a great tale to tell, you should tell it.

It was heroic, wasn't it! I saw "Star Wars" in a theater when I was younger. I watched the trilogy, then years later the prequels came out, which I never warmed to so much. A lot of technology going on, special effects, and recasting to show characters when they were younger. Then I saw this and was reminded throughout the movie of the selfless heroism of all the characters. This movie is heroic! One last thing ... I REALLY liked K-2SO. A lot of people like silly or cute, but his droll, sarcastic manner was hilarious and refreshing to me.

Tony Gilroy is one of the writers for Rogue One and the creator for Andor, so if you like gritty Star Wars you will like Andor. Andor should have been a movie really but I think they chopped it up to make a TV show.

"I really do need to re-watch it (The Original Trilogy)." I hope you can track down the original un-edited versions of the original Star Wars movies and watch those. That way you can expose yourself to both versions (unedited and updated).

We had the VHS special editions for most of my teen years and while I remember all the hubbub about the changes, in the end I came to realize they didn't they hurt much, and some of the effects were actually pretty nice (Cloud City improved IMO). So I kinda let it go. Not worth making a fuss about. Then today I just saw the clip of the "updated" throne room climax from Return of the Jedi. Good...god. Just why.

This is the only newer Star Wars, movie or tv show, that actually feels like Star Wars. It's good, which is surprising.

I love this movie, it's so good. Second best Star Wars movie right behind Empire Strikes Back. Has for the trilogies - there is the original trilogy, there is the prequel trilogy....it's such a shame that they never made episodes 7-9.
