@@roguehobbies I'd love a history of the artists who drew for GW across it's various ages. I know it's not painting but it would still be really interesting. Also as someone who is not as artsy as you it would be cool if you could break down what made their styles unique and what sort of techniques they used. It would be intersting if you showed like evolution of some particularily famous pieces which have been redone throughout the years, like Horus and the Emperor, the panel of mutants with like eye stalks and weird mouths, or the famous xeno's picture from 3rd e showing minor xenos like Kroot and Hrud which would go on to become staple "background characters".

In the mid-late 90s when I worked at a GW store there was a definite move to eliminate the "fun and wacky" elements and focus more on the grimdark ahead of 3rd Edition. Even though we were still playing under 2nd Ed rules on store game nights, my coward of a manager had me tell one of our most enthusiastic community players that he could no longer bring his (perfectly legal) Squats & Guard to the table. In addition, we were made to repaint many of the Ork models that our store had provided to a huge regional store display. We'd gone with the idea of Flash Gitz in 70s Disco style fashion, with zebraskin and leopard patterns, gold plated guns, all fitting in with the style of flashy Ork mercs for a bit of fun. The other stores loved them, but it came down the line that there was to be no "joke" characters in 40k displays, and to "save the fun for GorkaMorka."

oh man ... I knew the fun had dissappeared from 40k when I got back into 40k with 8th edition and the Ork codex was about green aliens with guns. Gone was the wacky nature of their faction. It made me sad. To hear that GW even told stores to eliminate the wackyness somehow makes me even more sad. 'ere we go' and the two 'realm of chaos' books remain the best 40k content that GW has ever produced.

One of my favorite opponents (Jim Murphy) was the epitome of "fun/silliness" that would certainly rub and GW store manager the wrong way. Bloodbowl Wood Elves named after the Green Bay Packers with his almost untouchable blitzer Branch Farve? Yep. His Gorkamorka mob called "The Orkula Corp" with vehicles painted in desert camouflage pattern with the palm tree insignia in white paint (sans the swastika)? Yep. Great guy that certainly wasn't a power/competitive gamer but a real pleasure to face off from the other side of the table.

Massive props for using the end theme from the Raccoons as the theme for Killer Eggs on Trikes. If I remember correctly, GW took 2nd edition Epic off the shelves in about 1997. About 18 months later they relaunched it as Epic 40,000, but the Squats were not included. So while Epic lasted until around 2007, I don't think the Epic Squats made it out of the 90s.

In the nearly forgotten SL4M Sector there are tales of a mining league considered so radical that their ships are said to surf the waves of the warp. When their mining vessels break warp, the any who see them are bewildered by the sheer saturation of colors that face them. The newest pots reef even when still sealed (reefing is when the paint starts to evaporate and leaves a ring of dried paint at the top of the pot) They refuse to move with the times and start using dropper bottles, and this is the reason why. I think that the basic problem with Squats is that GW kept giving away their key traits to other factions. For example they turned Orks from obnoxious brutes into wacky crazies, taking away the original Squat trait. Then after they turned Squats into fantasy Dwarves in Space they ended up giving it away again, by turning Space Wolves into fantasy Dwarves in Space. That way they creatively ran the faction into ground.

I have many, MANY of the old metal models and have made homebrew codexes for every edition since 6th Edition that my friends allowed me to mess with in our games up until the release of the Leagues of Votann. I love the Votann as well, but there will always be a spot in my heart that is left wanting for an update of the old Squats as an army in 40k, and not just a Necromunda gang (although I own a ton of them as well, LOL, and approve of their presence in the game).

Great video as usual. I have a tremendous amount of nostalgic affection for the original WH40K Rogue Trader book. I bought it in the summer of summer of 1988 when I found it in a second hand bookshop (I'm old AF) and to this day still dive into it from time to time. But must admit, I don't have much love for the old metal minis. Even back then I though they were mostly just ugly blobs, and only bought them as they were needed to play the actual game. What I do love is the enthusiasm and passion Louise brings to this channel. The joy simply leaps off the screen, and never fails to make me smile. Not to mention the fantastic skills as an artist on display. I do find it very interesting that younger people have a lot of interest and affection for the old metal models. I could play Napoleonics and spend years reading primary sources and painstakingly recreating the correct uniform for each regiment. But I'm playing the silly space game where people can walk through walls and survive in the vacuum of space. The game where intergalactic fungus coalesced into an earth ape body plan with teef. The game where an entire planet was destroyed because a man in a wolf costume didn't call his dad before invading. It's completely ridiculous, and that's a GOOD thing!

My mom comes from a town in Québec called Sorel, now named Sorel-Tracy.
