amazing lecture. i never studied psychrometry before and need to for my fundamentals of engineering exam...this video was great! if i may add, i think that the reason unsaturated air does not take additional moisture during cooling is because *the vapor pressure is kept constant* as you cool it. since the vapor pressure is constant, the water mass is not added. once you get to the saturation line, the properties of the air change (from unsaturated to saturated) and this allows air to accept water.

If we add moisture to the air; the pressure will increase because of the mass of the moisture. It is understandable. But, when we add the moisture, how the temperature remains constant. The above point you have mentioned while explaining Dew Point Temperature.

water molecules which have higher energy than average energy of a molecule in liquid, escape from liquid region. as a result of that internal energy of the moisture on wet bulb. then temperature goes down . moisture on wet bulb absorb heat from the wet bulb. then wet bulb temperature goes down

But if I will apply the wet cotton , then the thermometer will measure the temperature of the wet cotton , not of the air. Secondly, when we have to take the reading of the wet bulb? when we apply the wet cotton , some minutes after that , or when the wet cotton dries. Thirdly, depending upon the temperature of the water in which the cotton is soaked in, the temperature of cotton will be different , which means the reading of wet bulb thermometer will be different everytime depending upon the temperature of the wet cotton. So we are only measuring the temperature of the wet cotton (or simply the temperature of water in which that cotton was soaked) and not the temperature or saturation of the air. Fourthly, whether the saturation of air is 0%, 10%, 20% , 30%.... 60%... or 90% ; after a particular point of time all the moisture of the wet cotton will be absorbed by the air. So , Isn't the fall in temperature measured by wet bulb will be same In all of the cases because the moisture is completely absorbed?
@mohittiwari19903 жыл бұрын
That's the real challenge...... Measuring Wet Bulb Temperature is not that easy...... Good experience is required. 1. Cotton is wetted with water that is at normal temperature. Neither hot, neither cold but at the same temperature that the Air actually is i.e. DBT. 2. Yes, Wet Cotton would become dry after sometime....... That's why the Wet Cotton arrangement is designed with a small container / tank that has enough quantity of water (water that is at DBT of Air). 3. As already said, Water is at same temperature..... DBT of Air..... So the Wet Bulb of thermometer will initially show same temperature that a Dry Bulb thermometer is showing....... But as the Air Flows over the WB Thermometer..... Due to Evaporation of Water (Evaporative cooling effect).... the WB Thermometer's reading will drop..... When the Evaporation rate becomes maximum....... The Wet Bulb thermometer's reading will stop dropping further and will become Stable...... That Stable reading of WB Thermometer is noted as WBT. So, WBT of Air will be either equal to or lower than DBT of Air....... How much lower will depend upon: Rate of evaporation of water from WB Thermometer...... Which depends upon...... How moist the Air initially is i.e. Relative Humidity....... High Relative Humidity results is low evaporation rate........ Thus WBT will be close to DBT........ Low Relative Humidity means..... High evaporation rate....... Thus WBT will be much lower than DBT. WBT Measurement needs a lot of care...... 1. Air flow rate over Wet Bulb should be within specified limits...... Not very high flow..... Not very low flow. 2. The Air once passed over WBT shouldn't keep passing over and over again (No close looping)...... Only fresh air should pass over Wet Bulb. 3. WBT Equipment should be kept away for Direct Sun Light / source of heat. 4. Air flowing over the WBT equipment should be the same Air whose WBT is to be taken. 5. Water used should be at same temperature i.e. DBT of Air...... If not same then as close to DBT of Air as possible...... One easy solution for this is to use the water that is exposed to the same Air /atmosphere for enough time...... Such water will be nearly at same temperature that the Air is. 6. Quantity of water should be enough to perform the test...... If water shortage occurs..... Wet Bulb dries out...... You will get DBT instead of WBT. 7. Reading should be taken soon as the reading becomes stable...... .................... .................... So on Now you would feel that taking accurate WBT measurement is really tough job........ Needs a lot of attention and care.
