Five types of mikes for singing depending on technology (method of converting sound to electrical): dynamic, condensor, ribbon, crystal, carbon. stage singing with live orchestra or karaoke is almost always DYNAMIC mike worldwide. Dynamic uses inductance, is unidirectional (cardioid polar pattern), is good for rough and tough. Shure SM58 is dynamic. The most important thing to know is that dynamic mike's axis should be perpendicular (0 degrees from the perpendicular) to the plane of the face, for volume sake, but two problems here ... hand gets tired holding it awkward like that for long, also for audience eyes your face is more covered up, therefore another useful thing to know is that if you skew the dynamic mike axis a little, up to 45 degree max, volume loss is only 10% but those two problems get solved quite a bit. Beyond 45 degrees volume falls off rapidly with angle. I am a singer, I try to keep mike axis around 30 degrees, thats optimal. My two cents worth.
