Thanks for uploading the Legendary Edition of this amazing scene. Took me a while to find a copy in HQ. This sense of menace sets the tone for the trilogy perfectly, Sovereign and his servants number among my favorite video game antagonists. "We impose order on the chaos of organic evolution. The Chad Sovereign vs the Virgin Harbinger...back when the story was more Lovecraftian about the Reapers. There was an aspect of unknowable mystery and eldritch horror when they didn't have "creators" or a beginning. Plus, Sovreign just talked shit and meant it...Harbinger just tries to convince and beg for you to join them.

Damn, I don't see why people harp on good old harbinger that much for simply being a less arrogant reaper. He has the same outlook as Sovereign, he never begged anything, I don't think you even know what begging is if you think anything Harbinger said was close to that. The main difference between Sovereign and Harbinger is that Harbinger actually holds some respect for Shepard rather than apathy, and that Harbinger is present through most of the game instead of the end. Okay, so the effect on his voice is not as cool as Sovereign's, big reason to dislike him, whooo.

The delivery of the line "We are legion" cuts like a razor. He manages to sound smug, haughty, but also just like he's delivering a cold hard fact. I'm sad to say this is where the horror of the Reapers peaked. From here it's all downhill.

“And at the apex of their glory,they are EXTINGUISHED.” This entire dialogue of Sovereign was thoroughly and superlatively demoralizing,but this line…it implies that even at your peak,you will be exterminated as routine.No hope,no improvement past this point.No point in fighting.The first time I saw this interaction I immediately tried to replay it.Stupefyingly menacing,inciting secondhand fear,and questions.

Shepard interacting with the beacon was a careless thing to do. After Ashley and Kaidan take Shepard back to the Normandy. Shepard can say Ashley or Kaidan were careless when they approached the beacon. It's ironic, when Shepard does the same, and puts Saren's base on high alert after talking to sovereign. Saren and Benezia knew Shepard was on eden prime after Shepard interacted with the beacon. The beacon on Virmire was how Saren knew his base was under attack. Before Geth reinforcements arrive to the bomb site, Shepard makes another ridiculous decision. Placing the nuke before Kirrahe's team can make it to the rendezvous point. Not providing backup in advance was where it all went wrong. Leaving only two people to defend a nuclear weapon without any support endangered everyone and the mission itself. Whoever dies between Ashley or Kaidan, is Shepard's fault and the result of poorly made decisions, we didn't even make ourselves.

How did we go from this to the pathetic trash talking of the Harbinger? It's not just the petty insults or taunting that bothers me but the voice as well. It also doesn't make sense why the leader of the Reapers cares so much about Shepard. You cannot tell me Shepard was the only one to defeat a Reaper as we see a derelict Reaper in ME2. In ME3 the Reapers suddenly act like they are in the right. That is a far cry from everything Sovereign tells us in this scene. The writing takes a significant downgrade post ME1 sans the character writing. This is only one of many reasons why the first game is the best in the series by a wide margin in my eyes.
