The one thing I remember about the Rohr cars, is that they were the very first ones that entered service since the WMATA Metrorail first made its appearance in1976. They didn't have LED signs back then. The Rohr cars were originally fitted with destination signs that roll over. For today's generation of the WMATA railcars, the 5000-6000 series that is, have been rebadged by CAF and Alstom to reflect how the original design has evolved.

Well, you're right about that, schuminweb. I wonder what they plan on doing with the 1000 series Rohrs. Could they put them on display to reflect their days of being in service? Could they be scrapped? Surely the 2000-3000 series and the 5000-6000 series remain active in service. These railcars are in perfect condition.

The Rohr trains of the DC Metro are very classic. Don't forget though, they will be replaced by the brand new 7000 series cars, which will be used for the extension to Dulles.

These sound just like the trains used on the Los Angeles Red/Purple Line.

I will say, I will miss the 1000's when they are gone, but I won't miss the fear of riding in one given how dangerous they are...

Anybody know what they are doing/going to do with cars 1000 and 1001? I hear they are just sitting at Greenbelt Yard doing nothing, but I could be wrong.

They are still sitting in Greenbelt Yard doing nothing, along with 4000-4001 and 5000-5001.
