A great day out on the water welcoming in the new lady in my life, Misty, the 26' International Folkboat. I can't wait to see the adventures we have and the oceans we sail. Basically a tiny house on the water! Bring on the islands... but first let's learn to sail a bit better😅

Well done mate, in one of my lives I was a sailing instructor and see you are on the right track with learning. I will not be critical however to help you I will on occasion offer suggestions. 1) you have winches on the boat, they are designed to take all the load off your body (which has just been repaired.) put at least one turn on the winch (clockwise) before you start to haul. If a sudden gust takes the line out of your hands it can be had getting it back with burns on your hands. 2) do learn your knots and how to tie off properly to a cleat. not just is it neat but if it is done the same way all the time, even on a dark stormy night you can undo it. 3) try not to sail with fenders hanging. You can lose them and it it poor etiquette. You have chosen a bullet proof boat you should be very happy with.

Very respectful way of telling a new sailor some very common norms. (I’m 22 and bought a boat on a whim, went sailing and made a fool of myself by leaving the fenders out, had guys on other boats screaming at me to bring them in lol)

Great boat. I'm very excited for you as I've had a similar one in the past. One thing that may help you when getting underway by sail is to always raise the rearmost sail first. This is so that the boat turns into the wind and makes getting the headsail out and set up much easier. Also practice "heaving to" in nice conditions like that so that it becomes second nature when you really need it. Wishing you fair winds always.

Beautiful! I also have an international folkboat here in Sweden. There are thousands here. Never seen one with a popup roof, must be an Australian invention! Safe, reliable boats that are fun and easy to sail, sporty when there’s a breeze but not scary. Make sure to check the seacocks that let water escape from the cockpit, the valves need to be in good order and you need to be able to reach them if a tube breaks. And make sure you can tension the backstay enough to bend the mast (people recommend 16/1) and have good systems for the outhaul and cunningham. Then you don’t really need to reef the main below 20 knots, you just flatten the main as much as you can by pulling everything when the wind comes up and adjust the main car to leeward if needed. And adjust the headsail cars backwards to open the top of the headsail to let the wind escape. Have fun!

Hey Rod welcome to the sailing life ⛵. Its so obvious how excited you are seeing the possibilities that open up to you with Misty and you are already looking to improve its capabilities. Be warned it is very addictive and you are always spending money. We came to the same decision a few years back too. I have been in tinnies all my life and in the end we had a big beautiful Formosa plate boat and then we sold it for a sail boat, a locally made 1985 Mangrove Jack 28 and have never looked back. With a yacht, when everyone else is heading home, we are having a shower, putting on the kettle or having a cold beer before dinner. We are Scarborough based and not super experienced sailors either so if you ever would like a second boat to travel with on the long ones up the coast message us. Have a look at the Australian Coral Sea reefs 200nm-ish NE of Fraser. Those places are amazing and VERY fishy. Happy days 🤘

You remind me of me just a few years ago (except I started late in life). Bought a 24' boat. Sailed it like there was no tomorrow. Earn a lot in three seasons. Keep sailing, keep learning. Sailing vids and reading are essential, but there is no substitute for being out there. Mistakes will come. A good sailor will learn from them. And mistakes will come less and less. With confidence and nautical miles comes longer trips and being able to handle rougher weather. Keep it up. You newness to the sport and your enthusiasm was keeping me watching and engaged. Hope to see more soon.

A nice little boat you have there, it could take you pretty much anywhere. Only suggestion for you is to maybe focus a little more on things that don't need electrics, such as a good steering compass, somewhere to read charts with red lights for night use. I'd also get the radio aerial up the top of the mast, it will give far greater range. Get some strong clips to hold the lifting roof down for when it gets rough maybe? Hope you have some good adventures.

Reminds me of when I bought my first sailboats, a Cal 25, then less then a month after a very very nice oDay 22. Had that 22 for 3 years then bought a Hunter 33 so HUGE step up in size. I still have my Hunter 33, nice boat but I can tell you bigger is not always better. When you go into the bigger yachts, more work, maintenance, and expenses. Then never, a repeat NEVER let your boat sit too long without doing washing and general maintenance. I recommend every 2 weeks to keep it nice. Simple problems quickly become big problems if not fixed. Looks like you got a nice boat there and a 26 is big enough for most people. Id rather have a very nice well maintained 26 then for example, a neglected 41. So keep it and have fun. That outboard is great, light weight and you can take it out with ease to work on it, unlike an inboard.

Great work Rod a very nice old vessel indeed it actually looks similar to a " Hood " which is a sailing boat from around the same era , I would recommend a bigger motor a 6 hp is a bit too small for a 26 foot vessel . 6 hp might be okay in a harbour or lake but when out in the ocean or on a river you can have currents anything up to 7 or 8 knots and throw in some big waves you can find yourself in trouble very fast , I have been there and done it before I learnt some very valuable lessons lol . ✌️

Great boat, folkboats are hugely capable. Great attitude. Couple items of advice: 1) Heave to often an to do all of your mainsail work(I always do it on starboard tack). Motor out, unroll the jib(great looking jib) and when on port tack close hauled, just tack without releasing the new windward sheet, and lash the tiller to leeward when the boat has slowed. Took me 22 years to learn the most useful sailing maneauver. 2)On the same note, reef the mainsail a lot and get at least 2 reef points installed. 3)get all of your anchor rode that you think will be deployed on deck before you actually deploy it, it will save your fingers from injury. Have fun, heave to alot

Watching videos like this has inspired me to seek the freedom of the sea. I did a little sailing years ago, and I miss it.... so seeing this has made me realise that it's not an unachievable dream.

I'm getting some boa envy too after watching this. That'll be great for big trips and safely taking the family out.

The Folkboat is very capable for its size, and very manageable for a single-handed sailor. Best wishes!

You made me remember the first time that I sailed solo and the nervousness and excitement of that sail. I'll never forget it.

A refreshing take on sailing... its truly all about the basics... so many sailing channels forget this, they are too busy trying to be experts and important celebrities. Looking forward to the next sail. Best regards from Norway

I used to sail a couple 1/4 tonner San Juan 24s (similar-ish to this boat) as an instructor of sailing camp. Often with a group of brand new sailors, or people with various disabilities on board (DSA), not much for crew. From my personal experience, doing what your doing(-ish), I noticed a couple boat related things that might help you on your journey with this wicked new adventure machine: #1: A tiller extension works wonders for being able to move your hands and drive at the same time, also nice to be able to steer from up on the windward gunnel when the boat heels when powered up. #2: No better investment than a solid anchor, and a second for when you'll eventually need it. Plus the added benefit of a sound night's sleep on the hook. #3: An extra can of gasoline and bag of rice and beans, tucked somewhere safe could save your life some day. Sailboats are small, but you can definitely find the room. This thing is super wicked and I'm just stoked to see more small boat adventures on KZbin. Congrats dude!

Thanks for the tips mate, yep I just purchased a better anchor so I’m with you there. Will definitely look at the tiller extension and emergency rations👍
