I refuse to get a smart TV for this exact reason. I hope we can one day jailbreak TVs so I can flash Linux or Android onto them and don't have to deal with all this BS.

But we shouldn't have to... it's our TV. I wish companies would stop thinking they've got a stake in our devices 🙃

Actually how can a company sue you for an action you take on something you own? Companies try to use copyright, but that law is meant to govern copying. The DMCA is partially unconstitutional as it infringes on your property rights

File a complaint with the FCC and the FTC. Prepare for for a class action lawsuit. This is coersion and intimidation tack tik. "Agree to our terms or you can't use you tv that you paid for."

Nice! Does that mean your TV doesn't work now? 🫠

This is why lawyers should be involved. Any change in a contract should by law require two signatures. When one party wants changes, it should be illegal for that party to try to impose them if they don't have your signature, i.e. you never sat down at a table with their representative and signed the amended contract. It's not just Roku doing this, the banks, cableTV, and cell phone companies are all doing it, in the name of convenience. But power-mad corporations abuse it all the time. Especially banks, as they usually require a visit to a table to sign any loan promissory note. The same should apply for credit cards. Imagine that. No sudden rate changes.

Roku has turned a corner with this move. Not that long ago, Roku was a startup that gave customers what they wanted, and they grew fast. But once a company becomes powerful, they too often make a decision to take their eyes off their customer and put it on money. Serving customer needs is no longer important. Now, getting their hands on customer money is the focus. Anti-customer actions follow, such as this dumb move they made. Customer service is now viewed as a liability, so they make cuts. As for me, I made my own business decision in response to theirs: I will not buy from Roku any more. I'm not their piggy bank to be raided.

Forced arbitration is ludicrous, I just hope the average consumer doesn't overlook this and really does reconsider their business elsewhere...

Absolutely. They're making the choice of my next TV very easy 😅

This is a short-term fix in my opinion. My Roku is just an attachment to my TV and I only got it to access streaming services not offered on the TV. That was a few years ago. Now those services are available on the TV so the Roku can stay a brick that has a nice aquarium screen saver on it. To be sure I'll NEVER get a Roku TV or any TV that tries to force me to changed terms after I already paid for it.
@simoncaine95156 ай бұрын
Agreed. They're worried about becoming more obsolete. And instead of moving with the market or innovating, they decided to try and ring fence off customers. Which has never worked 😅
@dtvjho6 ай бұрын
@@simoncaine9515 Nope, Roku has managed to damage their reputation instead. Customers like myself have already made our own decisions in response to this, and we will not buy Rokus in the future. Just like with corps getting political and taking anti-customer steps, these CEOs and boards suffer massive reputational damage, falling sales, and eventual shareholder revolts. Just like Disney and Bud Light. They need our money to survive as a business, but we don't need them. We can spend our money elsewhere.

Surely forced arbitration is illegal? You can't contractually obligate someone to give up their legal rights (can you?!).
@simoncaine95157 ай бұрын
In the US it's allowed. You'd have to query it and wait for a reply if you wanted to not opt in. As I said, part of this was already in the updated terms from last year 😒

Sounds like a business opportunity here. It shouldn't be too hard to create a "smart" TV using a slim PC and hardware with one or two HDMI ports, with the necessary software, allowing a computer monitor (no smarts) to be the TV screen.

@@simoncaine9515 That is telling. The fact that the legal sites are really bad, just shows the owning companies attitude: customers exist to be rifled, not served.
