I've been a sax player for almost 40 years, and I've always dreamed of being able to play brass or string instruments or keyboards, but I just don't have the time, money, or natural ability to master those other instruments. When I was in college in the 1980s, I saw Spyro-Gyra and they had a midi controller that looked like a soprano sax--a custom-made piece of kit that probably cost 10 of thousands of dollars at the time, and I've always dreamed of having access to something like that. Roland--you've done it! Sure, some of the instruments aren't perfectly natural-sounding. Sure, it has a very midi-like overall sound. But for people like me--who are not professional musicians, or aren't trust-fun kids, or aren't independently wealthy--we are one step closer to a dream of many woodwind players--of being able to make the sounds of any instrument or electronic device or keyboard we can imagine, using an interface we already know and have mastered, at a price that most of us can actually afford, and can use without having to be a midi expert or synthesizer wizard. And it's Mac-compatible! Thank you...

I've been playing one for a month. I am a sax player. I play through a Berhinger Ultratone H900FX and a subwoofer. It has a basic eq so I can shape the tones. Everything but the guitar sounds very good. The trumpet even articulates as it should. If you are a sax player do you play in perfect tune, in all conditions? The Aerophone lets you do that. If you are dissing this instrument only by hearing these compressed demo videos, you dont understand how sound works. Go play one in a music store through a good synth amp, not a guitar amp, and you will be an educated critic. And amazed.

This is a midi controller for musicians who play brass or woodwind instruments. The reason why people are so critical is that the quality of the virtual midi instruments is not great, not because the controller itself is of poor craftsmanship. I am disappointed because there’s no excuse for these sounds to sound the way they do. If companies like Orange Tree Samples, Omnisphere, and Spitfire can make very realistic sampled virtual instruments, there’s no reason why this instrument couldn’t play sounds of a much higher quality. Roland should have thought of that before showcasing this instrument because it’s a disservice to the product. To be fair the synth sounds aren’t bad, but I would argue that they’re pretty standard, even GarageBand is capable of those synth sounds with some tinkering.
@shawngregory80186 жыл бұрын

Quite a few negative reactions here, but this is what it is, a MIDI instrument with a wind controller instead of keys on a keyboard. The world of Classical music is struggling to appeal to a Young audience, and the problem that most Young people have with Classical music is that an orchestra sound is mostly more or less the same-ish. With instruments like this, played in an orchestra, this could well be the Way Forward in trying to make the orchestral sound more diverse. Personally, I can’t see any other purpose to this kind of instrument, it desperately falls short of replacing existing instruments. That’s my opinion.
@9999saxman6 жыл бұрын
Hilvert Scheper I think the point is to get new sounds. If I were to get a wind midi controller, I would still have my saxes at gigs. The controller would be used to add new sounds and textures.
@thesoundsmith6 жыл бұрын
I agree it falls short of replacing existing instruments. But ignoring the marketing, the instrument itself is not trying to replace anything. That is the same rant we heard in the 60s and 70s, when Moog and Arp were beginning to make a splash in recording. Great fear from the Union that orchestras would be replaced by a fat kid with a Coke to match the glasses he wore, ripped t-shirt and Moog-15. Clark Spangler and Pat Gleeson actually did an 'orchestra' with a Moog and an Arp 2600, but the LA studio time required to work this way is prohibitive. (I bought my 2600 from Pat at Different Fur to get the mods he made.) It's something to look cool on stage, be useful to work out certain types of music, and if you are comfortable with it, a lot of apps and sample libraries support wind controllers. The sounds suck eggs (for my needs.) And marketing the amazing power of breath to - gasp - open a FILTER. How retro.Somebody called it an insult; if you are a pro, it sounds like it. That's because they are marketing it as a toy as well as an ax. But as a controller of external synths and sample libraries? Only time - and a couple years of nights on the road - will tell.

I doubt it. Keyboards have been able to play those sounds for decades and are to the point where the instruments they're emulating sound very close to the real deal these days, yet you still have acoustic pianos being made. I'm sure it will be the same with the Aerophone. Besides, you still have a lot of purists when it comes to instruments and they're not going to give those instruments up for a device that merely emulates the sounds of those natural instruments.

In my humble opinion, you can go for or against this but keep in mind that this is a different instrument from the actual instruments it emulates. There is no camparison. Ex. an acoustic guitar and an electric guitar are only similar in name and can't be compared to each other insound, technique etc.

It's cool I guess. Looks like an improvement of the yamaha and perhaps even the akai but I guess practicing it vs my sax the sax is gonna get my attention more. It's hard to sound good on a synth. Alistair is doing a great job of it. If I practiced 10 hours a day every day I probably would be able to split my time between this and my sax. That said, it's pretty awesome the variety and I am sure you could use it creatively in lots of places. Glad to see they keep trying to make it better.

For fucks sake haters, what Universe do you people come from? Of course a breath controller, running a synth, is not going to sound *exactly* like the "real" instrument it's emulating. And guess what - IT. DOES. NOT. MATTER. The people in the audience listening are not going to be able to tell the difference, nor will they care - people go to a music show to hear... wait for it... *MUSIC* . They are not looking for "perfect" emulations of instruments. They want to have a good time listening to good music. The saxophone was the second instrument I started learning, back when I was about 10 years old, and ever since I started playing synths one of the things I've always wanted was a way to play my synths like I played the sax. I've tried different breath controllers over the years, but none of them ever worked the way I was hoping they would. But the more I learn about the AE-10, the more I'm thinking this might be the one that finally does. Roland, take my money!

This is actually a pretty cool digital instrument. Use it with other tech and you could have a cool set up. You could DJ with this thing and do all kinds of fun stuff. I agree that the sound of the brass or the pipe organ is not the same as the real thing, and it can't be as it is a digital copy or reproduction of the sound of the real instrument. But for what this thing is, it is pretty cool I think...

@ghiekorg6 жыл бұрын
ok some sound is not that great, but the number of insults is really ridicolous. You don't like it? Just don't buy it. it costs 800$. Not cheap at all. But how much is a saxophone? A cello? a flute? An accordion? A trumpet? Now sum the prices of these instruments and compare it with the price of this controller. If the instruments are 10x more expensive, do they sound 10x better? To this add the fact that if you wanna play nicely 5 completely different instruments, probably one life is not enough. Here you have to learn just one. And an ergonomically designed one. Not an instrument that has to follow physics rules. In fact i believe that lot of people is just "envy" because they spent a lot of time studiying an instrument and now they look at this in a bad way just because it makes easier to play different "instruments" without changing the controller. Or maybe they are just envy because they play a "real" instrument that produces just one timbre and they feel it limited compared to a midi controller. Or maybe they are members of the "old stuff is always better" club. So the electric guitar is worse than an acoustic, a keyboard is always worse then a real piano, a vst is always worse than a real rhodes, an acoustic guitar is worse than a lyre, a saxophone is worse than a bone flute and a drum is cheating compared to playing with sticks on stones like neanderthal. I am sure the majority of the people can't recognize a sampled instrument from a real one by ear (if the samples are good of course). p.s. i don't own an AE-10 and i am not planning to buy one. I am a guitarist and i play midi controllers though. i was just passing here by chance. So i have no interests in this.

I'd never buy this to play a real instrument replacement, except maybe on a home recording, I just bought a yamaha wx5 for the synthesizer sounds and cool effects, but I do agree with you. These are not meant to replace real instruments, but to provide a tool for exploration of music and if the owner thinks that playing a synthesized flute is what he needs, he's free, if you don't like it, just don't buy it.
