It's important to note that this isn't a refined version of his arrangement: it's something new he was trying out and he knew it was going to be a flawed performance. He talks about this earlier during the concert: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpTUe3dnlr1peKc (

This performance makes me hopeful. He was human, after all. It's important that people know that even for a genius, there is a learning curve and that they need to work too. I think this performance is beautiful. The contrast between the human frailty and such a powerful bass line is a beautiful thing to behold.

To be perfectly honest, I don't like most of the arrangements of Piazzolla's pieces for solo guitar that I have heard so far but this is a very sophisticated and difficult arrangement, very loyal to the character of the original piece, and in spite of some of the glitches in performance (it was live anyway) it still shows the mastery of Maestro Dyens at his best. Bravo!
@martaf.balleste62773 жыл бұрын
At the beginning of the performance he played Oblivion, and he introduced both pieces making it clear that the Libertango arrangement was not finished yet, but he wanted to play it "as is" for this audience. You can see that video on KZbin as well.
@mathieulamaure14873 жыл бұрын
I beg to differ. This is not Roland Dyens at his best, by any stretch of imagination. I saw him in concert several time in the late 90's beginning 2000's and he was simply sublime, unsurpassable. Unfortunately, the last years and the malady were already hard on him and his playing suffered, while still remarkable.

The version I like the most is by Argentinean guitarist Victor Villadangos. Give it a try, I think it's more powerful than this one.

@@carlosoehleryou're mistaken sir.. first of all when Dyens touched any piece to arrange, everybody's outcasted... heard Victors too.. he practiced that of his arrangement a thousand times or even more... Dyens said clearly (not included in thsi video but in Oblivion video in this channel)... the arrangement wasn't finished and yet all he is playing is just impromptu and random.. just imagine how vast knowledge a man had around the fretboard n music, one could play such randomly....

He performed here in June of 2015. We had started publishing videos of the concert one at a time until his passing, then stopped the project. We've just realized we have a few more videos of the event and we are going to roll them out over the next days/weeks. Hope you enjoy - we were particularly pleased to find this one of Libertango since his arrangement has become a cult classic with players, yet until now there was no performance of Dyens doing it on KZbin. So a lucky find!

@martaf.balleste62773 жыл бұрын

Sorry.
@edgarblanc4 жыл бұрын

Could have practiced a bit more
@shreetamakarmakar1314 жыл бұрын
He died soon afterwards. He was suffering for some time and understood his days are numbered. In the first video (Oblivion) he remarks that he'll soon meet Piazzolla. Also, he told that he was bound to make 'mistakes', or even 'screw up'. It's good that he played, otherwise we would never have heard these two pieces from him had he decided to 'practice more'.
@martaf.balleste62773 жыл бұрын
I suggest that you watch the video that Shreetama refers to; if you want to criticize after that, at least you will know the facts.
