As a MODX owner, I have to say that I love the sound of both of these keyboards.

Regarding pianos, the MODX8 doesn't trigger the sample velocity layers properly in the mid to low end, because of the GHS graduated keybed; however the CFX still sounded fairly decent compared to the Roland Fantom's piano. They are two completely different type of pianos. The Yamaha has perfected the CFX grand sound and Roland's in this video sounds more like a Steinway or some other type of piano, so not completely apples to apples, but more of a personal taste thing. At the same time, the quality of the piano and other sounds on the MODX are equally as good as anything on the Roland, so as far as just 'sounds' go, the MODX is way better bang for your buck. Basically, this is comparing two keyboards, whereby one is less than half the price of the other, yet as far as sounds go, the MODX is right on par! The Fantom would definitely have a far better keybed and a few features that the MODX doesn't; however considering the price difference, and seeing that the MODX can soon do pattern sequencing in the October OS 2.0 release, as well as having an FM-X engine (as compared to Roland's other engine), the MODX functionally stands up farely well and can do mostly what the Fantom can do. Each have their strength's on things they can or cannot do, as the Fantom has certain functionality that the MODX doesn't, and MODX has functionality that the Roland can not currently reproduce such as, Extended LFO and the number of quality effects onboard & usable. So it comes down to what you are using it for and how much you are willing to spend for the value. If you need a flagship synth with a high quality construction and an awesome quality keybed, and you are willing to pay the extra, then the Fantom would be the right choice. If you are more interested in the sounds it can produce, as well as fucntionality, and the price is a factor, then it is a no-brainer, as the MODX would be the right fit! This should have been a comparison between the Fantom8 and the Montage8, as that is more apples to apples. This is where personal preference comes more into play, because the Montage8 is right up there with the Fantom8. Just depends on what type of apple you think tastes better for you. I would be hard pressed to make a decision between the two, except that Piano is my #1 most important criteria and the CFX grand on the Montage sounds/plays better to me than the piano on the Fantom. Also, I came from a DX7II world and all my best FM-X sounds complement all the other sounds on the Montage AWM2 engine, not to mention that there are more OS updates with even more features coming on the Montage in the not too distant future (Yamaha reps have confirmed this several times, even since the OS 3.0 release), so it is quite likely that the Montage & MODX with receive a VA engine and many other features/enhancements in the future...this is all on Yamaha's roadmap! But still, if I had the money, I would have both the Montage and the Fantom! ;)

@@scottl926 Wrong. If the velocity and resonance settings are the exact same (which they are) there's absolutely no difference. The only difference is the way it feels (the keys) to yourself on your hands (Fantom 8 vs 7) and your expression. This is a legit comparison regardless of weighted keys or not against the Montage.

Yes very right..... Fantom sounds better but........Modx continues to get the Job done. Indeed it is light in weight is to carry for shows and travelling as well. But depends what you wanna.... Flagship is flagship. Fantom is killer.. at the moment not stable, freezing and crashing while making sounds or saving. But surely that will be fixed with the new firmware update and also lot of improvement is needed in the sequencer at the moment it is restricted and need more sounds or engine in to it. I starting liking more Fantom than a Montage they are many big reasons....... Just waiting for the firmware updates....

Fantom mimics somewhat closed studio sound. MODX sounds more open, ready for live play. Could be due to reverb and chorus settings.

Separate from the demonstration: Which was fine, because he is just comparing sounds. From a full workstation perspective, I don't think the MODX should be compared to the FANTOM. The Montage is the Yamaha flagship model and still the only comparison that makes sense is from a sounds perspective. The workstation features of the FANTOM are top of the line, and the Montage was never meant to be a standalone workstation. Even with the update it's still just a very nice synth with a sequencer, until you pair it with your PC then we can talk workstation, but not standalone like the FANTOM. Interestingly enough, the FANTOM has managed to attack both sides, with hybrid features and standalone ability. I like both machines! (except for the weird lfo character on the Montage, I could look passed it though)

@@Executive_Essy LOL...I like the Montage, hooked up to a PC DAW its a great workstation. Standalone however, its not as good as the Roland Fantom. I don't prefer to use either of them as a workstation though...I prefer an Akai Force/MPC/MPCX with a few synthesizers. So the Montage (which I consider a great muti-timbral synth) would still be a better fit for me than the Fantom, that being said the Jupiter X/Xm is the best fit of the three.

Lets say this way. To me Yamaha always sound great and realistic in texture but always so dead and somehow lifeless in tonality. Almost like generic thing. To me Roland, Korg almost always sound more unique and energetic with better sound "body" presence although not necessary more realistic. So my conclusion is, if you play standalone or you play classical pieces, ballads, Yamaha may be your best bet. If you play mostly any pop, rock genre from any period, other brands have better products for that. Just imagine if you play in band. Low end frequencies will most likely be reserved for drummer. High frequencies also. And there is also bass player. Add in guitar player and your keyboard will have hard time to cut through. Now the only freq. that is left is somewhere in the middle. So best bet is, if your keyboard have good powerful and energetic middle tones, which can cut through easily. An this is where are Korg and Roland much better imo.

The Roland has the far superior V piano and it cuts through especially in the midrange. The Montage and Kronus pianos ate great but the V Piano sound engine is the closest to my Steinway Grande in that each note is customizable.

The larger more expensive 'full' Fantom series has it's own dedicated chip for VPiano. Which is present on board and one of the key differences over it and our junior Fantom-0 model. Which is centered around Zencore (but loses out on the required tech for the VP). Don't get me wrong - not everyone likes Vpiano despite what it offers. So whilst SN is an older engine, it's not without it's fans and you will find numerous people comparing them for that very reason on youtube. Everything has pros and cons. Not everyone is fond of the new architecture. Its your money. Use your own ears.

I always found the yamaha pianos very thin in the low end but I like their mids. So I always play the Motif and the FA together. But I think this will be no longer the case when the MODX comes in.

The Roland V-Piano sounds good but there is a very subtle thinness to it (synthesized) & it is not as natural sounding as the sample based MODX CFX piano, especially on the highest notes. The Roland sounds kind of like listening to a compressed 128k or 160k .mp3 vs. the MODX which is more like listening to a less compressed 192k or 256k .mp3

Ac Piano in Fantom is modeling, same as the RD2000 (V Piano) , which I’m not a fan of ‘cause the lack of realism and expression. MODx Ac Piano is sample based. You should’ve compared the Super Natural Pianos on the Fantom which are sample based vs the MODx.

In that case a comparison between the Fantom and Montage would be the right one. In this video ONLY one single piano patch is compared and let me say it again: the piano sample (CFX) and the piano patch (called Performance) are THE SAME on the Montage and MoDX. Could some of you be a littlebit more realistic, please? Most people are listening and watching in this case to a compressed video/audio and even the outputs and conversion differences between the Montage and Modx - if there are any at all - don't play any significant rule in this video. Not to mention that a lot of people listen and watch this on their laptop and amps which are not high class studio monitors. The poster made a point: the sound difference is minimal and comes down to which one you personally like more.

I don't think that a half priced Fantom is a good idea. It costs to be the boss! lol They did that with the lousy FA thing...poor quality. You don't see Korg releasing a lower priced Kronos...(and don't say Krome because it is Not-The-Same engine). If a person needs a synth then go with the Jupiter, they both use the same engine and they both sound fantastic!! But if you need a keyboard workstation...you gotta drop the $dough$ to get a REAL WORK OF ART like the FANTOM. It's ALMOST like having an MPC in a keyboard...you can't chop samples on the Montage. The Montage is a synth with a sequencer not workstation. In its defense it was never meant to be a standalone workstation...the new sequencer was added to please a fan base that refuses to embrace change. If I were Yamaha I would just start producing a new line of Motifs that are real workstations. The Montage is a marvelous synth and should be accepted as such. I think the Jupiter X will be more my style with most of functionality controllable on the surface.

piano MOXLEY So the Kross is a cool board, no question. However, taking all parts of the Kronos into consideration, the Kross can not be held up-to it in comparison, in my opinion. At least not in the same way we can compare the MODX to the Montage, because they share the same engine and the differences are mainly in the hardware configuration. Which (MODX) still provides a level of quality, that the FA fell short of. I can back off of the staunchness of my assertion however, and say that if Roland decides to make a smaller workstation I hope they keep the hardware up to spec, with regard to robustness. I understand that it can’t be the same as the Fantom but it should not feel like a toy. I guess my disappointment in Roland regarding the FA gets the best of me. I don’t know when they will create a newer version of it but I suspect they will, and I hope the quality is inline with their recent releases.

Does anybody know if these are factory sounds or did he spend some time in the designer mode to adjust some things.. my fantom never sounded so clear when I first fired it up. The vpianos sounded damp and dark.. mellow. BUT after some work in the EQ section, Tone edit, especially the piano Designer there is this guy called Sound Board resonator. This in top and my favorite Vpiano which is the Eastcoast Stage sounds so clear and crisp that I am more than satisfied. Some minor tweaks in the character section of the designer, take out the highs and mids, close the lid 2 steps and you have a wonderful warm and melancholic sounding Variation. And that's with only the eastcoast Vpiano.

If you don't think Roland is by far the best you have to train your ears and listen better. Listen to live piano, epiano and orchestras at a theater. Or at least good quality digital recordings. And pay attention to all sound details. Then come back.

Try the Nord Piano or the CP88. That's theee actual closest I have come. I had the Nord Piano 4 but sold it in favour of the Cp88 because of the bette keybed. I would say the Nord is the better for CP70 sample and Cp88 second but they are both superior from anything else I have heard.

They already have the Krome. When they update the hardware to the Kronos I would expect a Krome update..the thing it may take a while.. if we dont see a hardware update by Namm of 2020 it may be next fall or 2021 before we see a true response to the Fantom 2019..
