Stu, these videos are priceless! One small recommendation would be to shoot these with a shutter speed that follows the 180 degree rule. If you're shooting at 24 frames per second, set the camera's shutter to 48 or 50 for the most natural looking motion blur. Unless you're shooting with the higher shutter to better show the action of your fingers playing, but for a more natural look, I would stick to 48. Can't tell you how great these videos are for people to get an educated perspective on the differences between makes and models!

Thank you so much Stu for these wonderful reviews! After watching you on different comparison videos, I was about to buy an FP-30, because my local music store literally said "the upgrade in the FP-30X is minimal", but good thing I found you here again !! So I just bought an FP-30X ;) Another slight difference that you are not speaking about is the color of the thin velvet line, visible above the keys. It's dark red on the FP-30 and black on the FP-30X, both in WH and BK, which in my opinion gives a more elegant finish. Thank you Stu for this amazing job you are doing, you are really helpful out there!!!

Thanks for this video Stu (and team) from the West Coast (Burnaby, BC). I picked up an FP-30 a few months ago (after a 45 year break in playing) and I have been enjoying it, despite some minor issues (Bluetooth connectivity, no line out). After seeing this video as well as your in-depth review of the FP-30X, (and a few from other reviewers), I feel there are enough improvements to justify the upgrade to the FP-30X. Especially since it fits my existing FP-30 stand and pedals. Just need to sell my FP-30 now ;-)

Check ThePianoForever on YT for all the pure key action sounds with the piano muted. Look at the FP-30 review it has the same action, the possible subtle changes Stu mentioned (slightly different black key texture... seemingly 'tighter' which could be unit variance/age) has no bearing on the actions noises so they'll be the same. I have one and it's actually a very soft/pleasant noise, I've heard worse.

The equivocal conclusions are intended. He works for a piano shop and they carry all the products he reviews. So while trying to maintain neutrality and objectivity as much as possible in his review, he cannot show strong preferences towards any specific product, otherwise the store owner and the manufacturers wouldn't be happy.

This is not only a significant upgrade, it really is one that almost makes the old instrument obsolete. This is just a much more realistic sound. I focus mostly on the piano sounds, not the other stuff. So, in terms of the new vs. old piano sounds, this one is not subtly different, it is scream it on the mountain much improved different.

I agree that the sound is much improved, but some users may be equally impressed by improved functionality, and the much needed line outputs. Suddenly, this piano becomes giggable. The old argument about Y cables in headphone sockets does not impress performing musicians.

Which digital pianos have low key noises?

That is a great suggestion! I will share it with Stu and the production team and, perhaps, we can cover it in an upcoming video. :) As for pianos with low key noise, the Casio PXS instruments have light and very quiet actions. The new RHC action in the ES120 has also been reinforced with more cushioning, which also makes for a very quiet key. Thanks and hope this helps! :)

Thanks for this review! We purchased the FP30X, great piano! - But BIG problem with "Roland Piano App" which is great, extremely helpful (almost a "must" for a piano without any display). But it has a BIG PROBLEM so far: it ALWAYS demands internet connection to work. And that's NOT what is stated in Google Play Store (where it says it will require internet "THE FIRST TIME" you use the app with a Piano, and for "some" features as well). -- We're Musicians who purchased a Music Instrument, not a mobile device which is aimed to internet! We perform in different places, where internet is NOT always available, or it may fail. -- Many Roland Piano don't have even a Display, so "Roland Piano App" IS BIG HELP for faster/easier Settings, and also to use ADDITIONAL SOUNDS/TONES that are not available directly from the Piano (but they're there inside) So we contacted Roland (Via our registered instrument-Support) requesting that the app does not demand internet for those features that don't require it. They said they would put in a "wish list" to consider... This should be considered much more seriously than a "wish"... -- We do hope Roland realizes the big importance of using the app without internet AND FIX THIS, it's a Piano! We encourage everyone using this great app to contact Roland, requesting this, because it would improve and help a LOT the customers & musicians experience who trust on Roland.

I am sorry to hear about your issues with Roland Piano App. With that said, Roland is a company that is very receptive to user feedback from my experiences. Hopefully, things are corrected so there is a way to access some of the features offline. Our fingers will be crossed for you!

@@MerriamPianos Thank you so much for your awesome reviews, indeed of great help to take a purchasing decision. The problem with the app was completely unexpected, since on Google Play it says it will require internet "the first time". We never expected that the app is demanding internet every time, otherwise it does not work, even for the most basic settings. We're VERY concerned, since nobody replied our 2 emails sent to Developers of the app, even after receiving the zendesk ticket numbers, (Developer email at Google Play), and the only response was from Support from the registered Piano, telling it would be passed as wish list. That was 2 months ago. The app was updated 3 days ago (Jan 23, 2023), adding new Piano models, but still requiring internet every time. It would be fantastic if you could contact them and/or make a review of the app showing that the internet "requirement" is a BIG limitation for Musicians, who travel to perform to places where internet is not always available, or even fail at home/studio, hence making impossible to use the app, which is a huge help, since lot of Roland Pianos don't have a Display. It has no sense at all to demand internet for features that don't require it. Also, the AWESOME extra sounds available ONLY through the app (obviously they're already in the piano, but for some reason not available directly...) Hence, if no internet, no extra sounds for performing when traveling... So we got mixed feelings, amazing piano with a limiting/ed app... - If you can help, it would be extremely appreciated!! Thank you so much. IMPORTANT P.S.: "Piano Partner 2" app, which allows Extra Sounds for FP10 does NOT require internet connection to work, but sadly is not compatible with FP30X. So for FP30X the only way for Extra Sounds (which lot are trully amazing) is "Roland Piano App"...

As Stu mentions, the FP-30X has a faster processor, so it can add more nuances to the sounds. (The more detailed a sound is, the more data it requires, which must be rendered in real time.) To me, it also sounds like they recorded entirely different pianos for the FP-30X, and the differences between them are much more obvious on the 30X than the 30-meaning, you get more variety.

@Suavissimo
@Suavissimo Жыл бұрын
There aren't any rhythms. It's a digital piano, not a synth. There are built-in demo pieces for each sound, and a metronome for practice-but that's the most automated playback you get from an instrument like this. It's more about performance than on-board sequencing or dance music.

One question? Does the lettering/ selections stand out more on the white piano or black version. Are the markings gray or black on the white piano. My eyes aren't great anymore and I want to know which color piano it's easier to see the selection letters/words. My luck , they would put gray instead of easy to see black on white.

Not sure which would be better, but there's not many buttons so you'll very quickly remember which buttons do what. If it's an issue though, I recommend getting a piano with a screen that's easy to read for you.

@MerriamPianos Жыл бұрын
Hi! Brent here! While it is a matter of subjectivity of course, I prefer the sound of the ES120 over the FP30X, but the I prefer the PHA4 action of the FP30X over the RHC action of the ES120. I know this may not be particularly helpful, as it is very difficult to choose between these two excellent pianos, but that is the truth.

I feel like the polyphony rating is often misrepresented, as if the 128 limit just means you can't play 128 notes at the same time. But doesn't that also count all of the "strings" that are having sympathetic resonance? It's entirely possible a beginner or intermediate pianist will come up against that limit.

Hi Javier, this is exactly my dilemma, have one fp30 booked for CAD 899, whereas fp 30x is 1099. Saying that, this would be my first piano and I have never even touched one before. Was looking for a fp-10 (CAD 759) but they are in backorder almost everywhere so got that deal on fp 30. However, in my case, if I can be half as good as I am imagining myself to be in 4 years, I shall buy an acoustic upright (Yamaha U3) or maybe a baby grand (from Kawai). So, I would like to put that CAD 200 difference into a good piano teaching app to get me to that level. Would really appreciate your thoughts on this.

Hi Merriam Music, Hi thank you for your demonstration very nice, I am an owner of a Roland G1000 and sadly the LCD is fading and I can't find a part, so I am looking for another portable keyboard, what my dilemma is I have always used the GS MIDI via the floppy discs for backing me up as a one man band, I realise that is very old technology, I am wondering as you say the Roland plays midi can I download all my midi files to a USB and plug it into the keyboard for playback as I dont want to mess with Ipads ect. or do you know of another model of any brand that can do this, your advice would be great await your reply with thanks Kind regards Noeline
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos 5 ай бұрын
Hi Noeline! Brent here! Thanks so much for writing in! :) The good news is that virtually all digital pianos now are MIDI compatible, which means that you can certainly transfer MIDI files over via USB and play them back through the piano. However, with that said, if these are multi-track accompaniment tracks, things get a bit more complicated and it might actually be better to find an instrument that has a plethora of built-in accompaniment options. In my opinion, the Roland FP-E50 is very well aligned with what you're looking for! In addition to an amazing piano experience, the model provides an exceptional array of arranger and accompaniment options. You can check out Stu's review of the model here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKOum62BiLhsmc0 Thanks and all the best! :)

I was curious if the speakers can be replaced by better ones? Hear me out; I detail cars so amongst that, I sometime upgrade factory speakers, LED headlights, etc. In some electronics there are upgradable things, and some that are more solid state that cannot be changed. I have the ability to do it and was wondering if you knew, or if it was something that you have any opinions on. My store has the FP-30X for $799 US, but does not have access to the older models. Since I'm a customer, they'd probably let me have it for $649. Is that good?
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos Жыл бұрын
Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! It is technically possible, but not exactly recommended for a multitude of reasons. Firstly, we strongly recommend leaving any type of repairs that involve opening up a digital piano to be left to a professional technician. Secondly, there are a number of reasons why manufacturers choose specific speakers or design speakers a certain way. Having a more expensive or higher-quality speaker may not necessarily lead to a better sound. The speakers have to work symbiotically with the rest of the instrument, which includes being voiced in a way that connects well with the piano tone itself. In terms of the price, $649 US sounds like an excellent deal based on our general price points here in Canada as a reference. :)

Biggest questions... 1) can you play quickly on the X version? The previous version had key travel which made this difficult. 2) are the speakers underneath on both, resulting in a muffled sound ontop of a table (without a stand) 3) what is the size and weight difference
@kidflersh7807
@kidflersh7807 3 жыл бұрын
answer to 1: key travel is kinda intentional. You can play fast, you just gotta adapt to it. Key travel is a feature of ALL acoustic pianos, so it's replicated in digital pianos

Because of the resonance upgrade, it becomes similar to electric guitar. If you love the sound of X series, play electric guitar such as LesPaul model.
