PianoMan. Great video. Thank you. I'll be picking up my own FP-90X on Saturday. I'm so looking forward to embarking on this journey. I just retired. I'm 67 years old. I have always wanted to learn to play. Many reasons why I didn't start sooner. But, never too old, right? Now that I'm retired, I should be able to consistently be able to put a few hours a day to learning to create butiful music. After a lifetime of Engineering, the left side of my brain is sufficiently developed. Now I'll be working on developing the right side.

Congratulations on your decision to get the FP-90X... you definitely won't regret that decision! Agreed that you're never too old to undertake new things, and if you're able to put in a few hours a day, you'll definitely be all set! I was a software engineer for 2 decades of my life... music and math or engineering seem to go hand in hand, so you're off to a good start!

A big thank you to Piano Man Chuck…as the proud new owner of FP-90x, I found your tutorial to be very clear and comprehensive. I am so grateful to have found your videos. As a visual learner, I do much better when someone shows me step-by-step and I can follow along duplicating what you do as you explain it. As a composer, I chose this stage piano because I absolutely love my GP607 digital baby grand and the sounds that come out of it. I find Roland manuals somewhat convoluted, and the fact that multiple languages are bound into the same manual is somewhat unwieldy. Rest assured, Chuck, I will be back. Thank you again!

I had an FP-10 and decided to upgrade to a 60X. I regret not jumping up to the 90X and so I will be putting an order in for a 90X. I think I am wearing out my 60X as my keys play funny sometimes. I will put the 90X in my outdoor art studio/office and put the 60X in my living room so I can entertain hubby in the evenings. I have an amp so will plug it into that. I've watched a lot of demos and you are the only person who has mentioned the rubber bit attached to the pedal. I went out and bought an expensive stage mat to prevent slipping and probably wouldn't have bothered if I had realised a mat was already there!!! Also, the bit about turning the pedal sideways is another interesting suggestion. I will try that. You mentioned a lot of things I didn't know about. Thanks for pointing this out. Your review is very helpful.

The FP-90X that I ordered thru Taylor's Music in West Chester, PA (in business nearly 90 years) arrived this week. I bought it primarily for the acoustic pianos and you're absolutely correct, they're dramatically better than those produced by the RD-2000's V-piano engine. The "PureAcoustic" modeling and faster chipset result in pianos with depth and clarity like never before, and as you mention the low end on the concert grand is amazing. Though the onboard speakers are quite competent for mid and upper ranges the elements are still too small to convincingly reproduce the bottom. I'd been using a pair of ADAM Audio T7V studio monitors and an ADAM Audio T10S subwoofer with the RD-2000. I decided to try the T10S alone with the FP-90X and it is the perfect complement to the FP-90X's onboards. Thanks again for the inspiration!

I was able to try this keyboard at a local Sam Ash. I just loved it. The keys are really nice and they move up and down easier than my old Yamaha P-70 piano keyboard. I just heard it in the stores but I am very happy with the sound of the piano, and the adjustment on the EQ and reverb. Sure the other sounds are decent but I really want the keyboard for the piano sounds

@@PianoManChuck I bought the FP-90X and really love it. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants good pianos sounds, piano like keys, and additional orgab, Rhoads, and some synth sounds. The 4 speakers and extra wattage over the competition provides more head room and the speakers do not distort. Though the piano sounds are good, they can't compare to VST piano software like Ivory II. But for practicing at home it's really good. For recording in a home studio I would get the software and use the keyboard to trigger the midi through the USB connection

Excellent overview!! Making sure I understand this part correctly: Re: the “USB Computer” connection on the back of the Roland, since the FP-90X has a built-in audio interface, it can pass MIDI information OR WAV files to my DAW (Logic Pro X on an iMac) in real-time via that USB cable, allowing me to play the ROLAND while recording in the DAW. Is that correct? Thank you again!

cool to be able to layer a sampled piano with a modeled. But you really use this modeling above Pianoteq int he studio, or the onboard EP samples over what you have on a desktop? Id think this would be a great live board potentially, and a fine controller in the studio (though I thought in your case you decided to own the MP11?).
@PianoManChuck
@PianoManChuck 2 жыл бұрын
I still have the MP11 that I use as a controller. However, the FP90X also makes for a fine controller... but I'm finding that the modeled pianos within makes it a complete self-contained unit without having the need to use 3rd party virtual software.

Chuck makes great comprehensive reviews, but I think the bit about touch wasn't so well explained. A heavy/hard touch helps you to play a wider dynamic range because the soft notes are easier, but then you have to work harder on the louder notes. In some music, fewer dynamic contrasts are needed, so you get a smoother and more agile performance if you choose a lighter setting. Having 100 settings may be very helpful with controlling external sound sources such as VST instruments. I like using a DP straight out of the box, preferably with default settings. Increasingly, I find that Yamaha DPs are set up well for me, but usually I have to tweak Roland DPs. Mercifully, they are very tweakable, and they have great actions.

Chuck would this be good for solo gigging with the on-board mic. Was there a reverb adjustment for the mic effects. And would you consider ever gigging or busking with this roland piano. Also are their any other keyboards to gig with with a build in 🎤 amplifier that would compare to the fp90x Thanks mj

When you asked this question, there was nothing in this price class (and quality) that offered mic inputs and effects. But now, Casio introduced their PX-S7000 (and PX-S6000) that offer exactly that, with more mic FX options than the Roland. As for busking, the Roland is 52 lbs, the new Casio PX-S7000 is 32 lbs (and can optionally run on AA batteries!). Both have premium quality key actions and grand piano sounds. How close does the action on the FP-90X feel to a real acoustic piano and would this be good for preparing to perform on a real acoustic piano? I don't want to get a Digital piano that gets me to play with bad habits that will ruin my performance on a real Piano. Can the reverb be turned off completely? would love to run it through a Mooer Ocean Machine Reverb/ Delay pedal for more control and even more epic ambience.
@PianoManChuck
@PianoManChuck Жыл бұрын
I can't answer that. A "real acoustic piano" can range from $200 for a used console piano to over $500K with hundreds and hundreds of models in between, all with very different key actions and feel. Its like asking to compare something against a "real car" - same thing, what's a real car - a Mini? A Corolla? A Rolls Royce? A Ferari? A Tesla model S? They're all "real cars" with prices from $200 used to over $500k. Best bet is to go to an acoustic piano dealer, find the action you like, then visit your local retailer to try the Roland FP-90X action. That's the ONLY way to do it. As for reverb, if you don't engage it, its off.

Dear Chuck, I own a FP-90X for some months now. As I was always unsatisfied with sampled pianos sounds (after bying then returning or selling back 7 differents digital pianos), I decided that my last chance to find MY piano was to try this one, with 100% modeling. When I got it I was very happy with the build, the look, the keybed, but again I was totally disappointed with the pianos sounds. I thought that it could be the internal speakers, so I tried my ILOUD MICRO MONITORS.. worse ! Was the only solution to acquire an acoustic one ? But I did not want to. Then I remembered that often some guys in forums were speaking about Pianoteq. I downloaded the demo, installed it on my laptop, and with only 1 USB cable it was possible to send midi and get back Pianoteq modeled sounds directy out of the FP-90X internal speakers .... WAOUH ! It was absolutely amazing. For the first time , I had the feeling to be in front of an acoustic piano. The association of the FP-90X and Pianoteq is totally amazing . The pianos sounds through the internal speakers are so realistic ! (now I know that the FP-90X internal speakers are really really good). I now have (my opinion only of course) the best possible digital piano: Roland FP-90X + pianoteq 1) FP-90X for it's great keybed, fantastic and powerful internal speakers (perfect for Pianoteq sounds), aesthetic (I have the white one) and strong build 2) Pianoteq for it's pianos ... how to explain ... it's so different of all the others digital pianos sounds...it's so....real, Thanks a lot chuck for all your kind videos. I would think, if you didnt end up liking Pureacoustic modeling from Roland, that the better combo for you might be the Kawai ES8/9 or MP7/11, theirs is a combo of samples and modeling, as opposed to here, where theirs is EITHER modeling or samples, available. Did Rolands modeling really not convince you? Im hardly finding much posted on youtube of it, so i guess people arent too taken with it.
