The story here for me wasn't Andre winning the French Open. It was Andre inspiring his opponent Medvedev when he was contemplating retirement two months prior. Such a nice story on top of his victory in Paris.

I didn't know their background but I always wondered, since Medvedev offered such a sincere hug and words at the end. I figured they must have had some kind of connection, since as Andre admits, he didn't get particularly close to too many guys on the Tour.

It's impressive that Andre achieved the Grand Slam in his first 4 titles (Wimbledon 1992, US Open 1994, Australian Open 1995 and Roland Garros 1999)

Andrei deserved at least 1 grand slam. He was always around the mark at the French Open in the 90s and that year was his big chance, but agassi was unbelievable to come back. It's tough seeing a guy who was 2 sets up about to win his lone grand slam get outgunned by one of the all time champions of the game but man did agassi earn the french after the horrible days in 90 and 91.

Serve and volley never worked on Roland Garros
@farid1406 Жыл бұрын
@@naxo9975 Depends on the style of serve and volley. Edberg and McEnroe made finals and were generally good on clay because they could move well and their serves were slower so they had time to get in. Their style emphasized the volley over the serve. Pete's style of serve and volley relied on a big serve, which meant he wasn't as fast getting into the net, and because people could get his serve back easier on clay he wasn't in the best position to volley. That's my take at least.

Pete had the ability to win it, but a poor combination of coaching, fitness and attitude got in his way.

Andre Agassi was a versatile player, the first in history to win all 4 Grand Slam tournaments on 3 different surfaces (hard, grass and clay). He became a prototype, a trailblazer for the future golden generation, also known as Big-3/4. The true all-courters or aggressive baseliners like Djokovic, Federer, Nadal and Murray. Long live Andre!

Andre was an inspiration in the way he came back from demotivation being a runner-up to Pete so many times. He probably didn't have the best technique, but inspired people from his absolute relentlessness and never give up attitude. Andre has a special place in tennis history for me, coming back from oblivion, to win in Roland Garros. It was that moment that he very much inspired me in my life to keep going and not give up.
