Great in depth review of the JC40! I love my JC40! I usually use mine with my fender champion 100 and a boss dimension c run in stereo and I get a great dimensional sound! I've had a JC77 and JC120 in the past also had a red knob fender ultra chorus and a fender ultimate chorus, the JC40 is my favorite so far, I love the stereo input in the front, when I'm not using both my amps together it's so easy to just run my pedals in stereo through the JC40. Every stereo chorus amp I've ever owned has had a little hiss, I think it's just a stereo thing. The JC40 has less hiss than any stereo amp I've ever owned. Great review! Thanks for sharing!

I have a new JC-40. I’m really happy with it. Back in the 1980s I had a JC-120 and I used to use the distortion to color the sound in a subtle way. I’m somewhat disappointed they “improved” it.

This is a great video and the most complete review of the JC40. You answered many of the questions I had, thank you very much. I was worried about the “hiss” and you made me feel much more comfortable, I will definitely buy a JC40 soon. I would love to experiment with different speakers, especially an Eminence Lil Buddy or mixing different speakers with Alnico and Ceramic etc. Again, thank you for this wonderful review.

@@TheSpaceGuitar You have been most helpful, thank you very much 👍 I will bother you again I am sure :-). I had several great tube amps, including a Carr Mini Mercury (with a Lil Buddy) and a Morgan PR12. The amp I regret selling the most is the BlueTone Pro 30M, a solid state amp! I am hoping to recreate that sound (maybe only in my head) with a JC40…trying to morph it more to a Marshall’esque vibe :-). Thank you again and best wishes from Connecticut.

fyi the jc120 can be quieter than the jc22. that's right - the minimum setting on the 120 is quieter than the minimum setting on the 22. owned these amps while in an apartment and it was noticeable. kept the 120, gonna get a jc40 for home. peace!

@@brochg You can also plug straight into the R input and it will only use one of the 10"s at 20w. Doing that also by default turns the chorus into a true vibrato. I don't always need or want that air-mixed chorus sound anyway. My dirt pedals sound better this way too. Even keeping on the chorus (now true vibrato) at low rate and depth for some reason made my dirt pedal a little less fizzy sounding. I've also tried running different overdrive/distorion paths to each input and had a lot of fun blending tones. Very versatile amp. Truly a knob turner's delight. You HAVE to figure out how to really use the tone control on your guitar with these amps. Regarding the JC-22, I haven't tried one, but i'm a little skeptical of a speaker smaller than 8". That would limit it for just practicing. Whereas, IMO the JC-40 sounds perfectly great, even at 1 on the volume.

There is a really cheap pedal called 'American Sound' by Joyo that I find works great with the JC40 if you ever want to get a tubey Fender sound from the JC40. This pedal also adds body to the sound when you play at low volume.

Thanks my friend, I appreciate your comment and that you liked that particular piece of music. That sound is achieved using a Volume Pedal, then a Boss VB2W, then Delay and Reverb, in the case of this video were all boss pedals. The game changing tone is the vibrato from the Waza vb2w. If you check my older videos, you will find a "vibrato in depth" of the JC40. Was one of my first videos but maybe the best for the music I played.

Go for the 40. But consider always mic or at least use the line out. It’s loud enough, it barks. A good solution would be an old 85/77/90 80w of screaming power but they’re just mono and not so light

came across your channel because of princeton chorus. i switched to tube amps 2yrs ago, but my local shop had a 96 p chorus. Loved the sound of it and got it. so, then i thought, i woul get another one and run stereo. Two problems, when you tap the stereo loop, it defeats the reverb and chorus. Sooo, got a good aby wich i been wanting awhile anyway. When i got it, i ran the 88 p chorus like you have, and a blackstar 10 watt tube amp with an ext cab. SONIC BLISS!!! but when i ran the 96 chorus with the 88, i was underwhelmed. they are voiced very different to be the same amp. Any hoo i hv several options to endevor, but for now i like the blackstar option. I am intrested in a jc40 as well. i subbed today my friend.

Thanks for the subscription. I've owned 2 Princeton Chorus, they had different speaker even if they were original. Anyway it's not a super reliable amp so I used to service it before testing. The amp in the video has some input issues and switch issues. Other than that was good. The stereo thing of that amp is really different from the one from the JC. I've sold mine, I'm curious about the ultra chorus that is the big brother of the Princeton but still made in usa. Oh, you can't go wrong with a JC40

Grazie mille!
@TheSpaceGuitar
@TheSpaceGuitar 2 жыл бұрын
Ciao Paolo, l’ampli in generale mangia molto bene i pedali, distorsioni estreme comprese.
@PaoloGiacci
@PaoloGiacci 2 жыл бұрын
Grazie mille

i have a JC-40 Question : if you crank the volume, and boost into it, will it clip harshly??? or does it have some type of soft clip circuit, which protects it from hard clipping ??? most people probably are not free to turn it up that loud in their homes, but someone could try early at a sound check.

Well, probably if you push the speakers that hard the would crank. I never had the chance to go that far because the amp is ultra loud. The JC22 has that kind of crank halfway, you can hear that in the video of the Hagstrom Baritone with the JC series.

Hi, a really great review, thank you. I have just bought one of these amps, so very grateful to you for addressing the 'hiss' problem so well - I thought I had a fault with my new amp. Could I run the line out in to two tube amps?
@whssy
@whssy 2 жыл бұрын
Never plug line level into instrument jacks. Amplified load (it's been through the pre-amp) is too high and there is a big chance you will blow your amp.

@@whssy Line level is amplified? There is an high and low input too
@whssy
@whssy 2 жыл бұрын
@@shckltnebay It's not amplified very much - but it does take load from the preamp. You MIGHT be lucky but it's not worth taking the chance. My brother just blew up his bass amp when he put a line level output into it and I broke my first guitar amp the same way many years ago.

@@whssy How is that different from cranking up a dist pedal's level or a boost pedal?
@whssy
@whssy 2 жыл бұрын
@@shckltnebay impedance is different. You CAN do it but just be very very careful with the levels. I wouldn't do it with an amp I couldn't afford to ruin - it just takes somebody to turn the volume up too high and you have a potential problem. Sadly you can't share links on KZbin but a quick google of "line out into instrument level jack" should give you an explanation.

Love your playing but why spend so much time showing how it takes an octave peadal and all of the real ambient effects. overdrive and distortion are usually the culprits to tell if an amp can handle pedals well. Then when you did try to demonstrate an overdrive you were using your finger nail to play No attack and no way to hear how it handle OD and distortion.. Maybe do another video Your ambient tone is very nice...

I’m more on modulations, delay and reverb that’s why I spend so much time on them. Testing deeply an octave pedal is for people like me who plays with looper pedals, so how an amp handles those frequencies is good for some kind of players. I’m not a proper of/dist guy and I don’t measure the quality of an amp through overdriven tones. There is another video with just drives with JC120, but still, no pick involved! @@joro7656 that’s one of the main reasons why I’m on the fence if I should get this amp or not. We all know the cleans are sweet. I need to know if it takes OD and distortion pedals well and if it’s got the balls to play in a live setting with a drummer
@maximilianl4453
@maximilianl4453 Жыл бұрын
@@pattillo21 it absolutly got the balls. The question is: How much chaos do you want? More watts equal more headroom. You can get the amp to about 80% before it gets mushy with heavy distortion. That loud enough for 2 drummers… But the JC 120 will have more headroom for sure before it gets ugly.
