I've seen some content creators spreading misinformation about this and the JX saying they'll have just 4 voices total. I already know they don't, but I'm sure UJIIE will further help people see that that's not the case
@st0rmchild2 жыл бұрын
That's right. These new ones are based on ZenCore / ABM and support much higher voice counts. The JD-08 supports up to 128 voices (though in a patch with four layers, each layer consumes a voice, which drops it down to 32, and enabling effects will reduce it further), and the JX-08 supports up to 20 voices (or 10 voices with both layers enabled, and again, depends on which effects are enabled). These are much more usable than the previous poly boutiques.
@autumnbrushtail2 жыл бұрын
@@st0rmchild Yes, Though the D-05 does have a maximum of 32, which is the same as the D-50, so even that is unlike these new ones that have added polyphony over their original counterparts
@Wagoo2 жыл бұрын
@@autumnbrushtail it comes at a big cost though, since the JX is just using the ABM template method.. which is just a customisation template for the zen core engine. It's a cut down version of zen core, limiting it to filter types/curves/etc. We know this as you used to be able to export these ABM templates from the Jupiter-X (where JX-8P is already available) and reimport them into the zen core side.. in which they could have their limits changed. Sadly this means it's not going to be an especially faithful recreation of the JX-8P circuits, so while having that as a model in a big synth as a little extra may be okay.. having it in a boutique that is claiming to be a recreation is certainly not what I find desirable. I would much rather have 4 voices of ACB based polyphony any day, over 20 ABM voices. ACB models every component in the original circuit.. Roland can get the polyphony higher if they just put more ESC2/BMC chips in the unit (see System-8 for details). So while people may be happy that Roland have "solved" the 4 voice count limit, it comes with a massive drawback most people don't understand
@autumnbrushtail2 жыл бұрын
@@Wagoo fair, but at least in my case, I'm not too fussed about the JX. I also don't really want the JD either, but if I was to get either, it would be the JD. The biggest benefit I suppose for the JX is that you'd be getting a synth that is at least vaguely like the PG-800 in terms of UI if nothing else. So if you don't jive with the Jupiter-X's UI, you can at least get that.
@Wagoo2 жыл бұрын
@@autumnbrushtail yeah unfortunately Roland missed a trick by not having it act as a PG-800 for original owners, that would have been nice The JD is supposed to use the "pcm engine", which I think is just Zen's way of doing romplers.. so I'm curious how close it sounds to the original. The D-50, which is supposed to use "DCB" I think used something akin to a games emulator where an environment was created where the original rom could be loaded.. although it's not 100% accurate.. you can hear subtle differences in the same patch on both (should be great for layering with an original). There I think it's a bit like zsnes vs bsnes/mugen, where one just aims to get the roms working and one goes for bit accurate emulation that should be the same as the original The other boutique with >4 voices is the VP-03 with 6. I don't think this uses ACB.. or is using some ACB with some big compromises/shortcuts, as there's very much a lack of subtle complex variation in the string/choirs.. that is embedded in the original VP-330 (and the VC340 clone)

My Japanese Friend!! I have watched your test drives of almost every Synth in Existence for more than 15 years!! And!! I must come to Japan to meet another Synth-hero!!! These tiny little modules are a continuance of my first synth module(Ensoniq SQ-1) Prior to owning the SQ-1I had an EQ-1 that allowed me to reach the deepest depths of my old Ensoniq ESQ-1, I was the 2nd in the world to purchase the American Made Ensoniq-ESQ-1. an exciting hybrid waveform blending tone. I now have the Yamaha Motif XS Rack module and the CS-2X and Roland FA-06 and newly purchased Roland Studio Electronics SE-02 Analog mono module. Thanks so much for Japan and America working together with these amazing Modeling and sampling technology. My First Synth was "Obreheim OBX-a, then a Moog Memory Moog, then the legendary Yamaha CS-80. yes the big beast got sold, so did the OBX-a and the Memory Moog. But having these manufactures design such instruments as we have today ,, helps me to feel no loss. Bless you my friend. We are from the same era in Time and although from 2 totally different Countries and Deeply differant cultures, we love the same stuff.

The JD-08 sounds less deep than the JD-800, because of its cheaper hardware-outputs. I just listened the the JD-800 video before this. In this video it shows that the Jupiter-X has better hardware than the cheap JD-08. With the JD-08 you get JD-800 sounds in home-keyboard quality...
I loved my jd800 and recorded some wonderful music using it, and it's been one regret I've had for selling it. I was excited to see this released as hardware because I've missed how gorgeous it can sound(still have my original bought in 80's Roland D50. There is something I've noticed in all the demos, and while the patch sounds are there, they don't sound as warm and full as my JD800. This leads me to believe the A/D convertor had something to do with it's warm and full sound of the Keyboard version. All the demos I've heard, including this one, come off sounding excessively digital, brittle and bright. Everything looks right, but the heart and soul of the original JD800 is nowhere here in this incarnation...sad!
@maxhult8302 жыл бұрын
Also, 2-part multitimbral instead of 6. Also, they omitted the Aftertouch parameters (LFO-pitch, TVF and TVA). The last one is a HUGE omission imo. The AT is what I use to get around the steppy filter, making for smooth manual filter tweaks or sweeps live, without messing up the sound. If it could be programmed from my JD-800, it could still be a bit interesting, but it CAN'T. And they didn't even include ANY of the expansion waves... why?... I SO hoped that this would be one of Rolands good ones, but it seems they dropped the ball again unfortunately.

I hear that all too much re: selling your 800; about 8 years ago had to sell mine instantly due to big budget freakout---first buyer offered just $400 and had to take it. One of those that got away, right?
@172Break2 жыл бұрын
I think the problem with these sound demos on KZbin is the bit stream reduction that KZbin applies to the audio - it makes it harsh. But I agree about the warmth and size of the sound from the JD800. I sold my JD800 in 1997 and bought a Korg Trinity - I have no idea why I did something so stupid. I bought a JV2080 and a few expansions in 1999 which helped my get over selling the JD800. I still have the JV2080.
@richardhermans44572 жыл бұрын
@@172Break I don't have a problem with the quality here on KZbin, because I listen to other synth demos and some sound wonderful. I listen through a Focusrite Scarlett audio interface and Sony MDR 7506 headphones. I also post my own music and I actually think KZbin sounds better than Soundcloud as far as the compression goes, and I upload WAV files, although they do compress them down to a lower quality. If I counted up how many times I was stupid with the gear I've sold and regretted, my regrets could circle the globe 3x. lol

As far as I can tell the D-05 sounds identical to the D50. Woody from piano shack even sold his D50 and kept the boutique because he couldn’t tell the difference. Given the D50 was entirely 80s digital it shouldn’t be hard to reproduce with 2020 processing power.
@L77kim77l2 жыл бұрын
@@geofff6671 Hi, the limits of old electronics lead often to a special sound - not just the processing power, it's more complex. It's like the old DX7 with it's very limited 12Bit DAC. To me the original D-50 sounds better, but no offence, we alll hear in a different way...

Does it have any of the original JD-800 circuitry or is it a VST in a box?
@m.a.freund33322 жыл бұрын
It's literally just the Zen Core VST in a box, locked in JD-800 mode. The filters aren't even a special reproduction of the digital originals, they're the general Zen Core / Fantom filters. As for the famed ultra hi-fi JD DAC, you only get that emulated in the Zen Core engine, none of the actual hardware magic is reproduced. This boutique version is cool & sounds great, I'm stoked Roland are making it, but you're still probably better off just getting an XV-5080 if you prefer hardware authenticity over the interface.
@jaggass2 жыл бұрын
@@m.a.freund3332 To be honest i'd rather have a JD-800. These boutiques are ok for live use but not for studio.
Great demo but the synth itself just doesn't really sound that special to me. I'm much more interested in Korg finally releasing the Wavestate SE with 61 keys.
