So my own experience with the XM a bit more of a year with one, this is a beast in all possible way. Capable of impressive sounds like a fantom could do (without most of the engine sadly) but yet, Zencore do marvel and I can really feel the D-50 heritage in it! It's also a monster which it's impressive internal speakers, I have to say, they are one of the best I ever encounter up so far, especially for the compact size of the beast. It's also a beast when it come about presets. Something like more than 3500? The key are really good, there are a LOT of controls, but that's also where the other type of monster come into play. The interface is monstrous in both way, but especially in the hard way.Really deep menu diving, way too many modes and how the controls work in each mode is not clear without spending a lot of time with the since (LEDs like on the System 8 would do marvel here) and the screen! that screen! I know the space is limited on the XM, but I would probably have traded some control for a bigger colour graphic screen with touch. Yes you can edit all the parameters from zencore but hell. That's a lot of parameter to remember.. I would not do sound design on the X/XM.. At least zenology help on that. The I-Arpeggio is also a beast, but a really hard one to tame. It can produce some really really interesting pattern, but it is also really easy to go overboard and get something that no longer work. The TR-Rec mode is not that hard to use once we played with it a couple of times, but again there are lots of parameters, I'm far from understanding 10% of them. I think the X / XM would benefit a proper interface. I still don't understand why the System-8 and other can be directly controlled by their VST counterpart (and vice-versa) but not the XM, even connected to a PC, you need to use a thumbdrive to transfer data... Roland please! Last but not least, user patch storage. this is ridiculous, there is what something like 256 bank of storage. Don't tell me that this just have 2MB of user space storage!(I don't know just put a random low number there) A bit before the end of last year, Roland gifted a large set of zencore sound packs (I own 46 of them). I can load less than 10 of them or something like that before the user memory is full, and the Xm does not even allow to load custom zencore dumkit. Why? I said 2MB earlier, but it must be way lower than that. I've just checked the size of all the .sdz files I have combined, it is 2.1MB.... It's really sad because it is a huge limitation and importing tones is not too hard, but time consuming especially when it come to slot management, you need to select which tone to overwrite when it is full.. Other than that, it's a really great synth!

Does it allow using a USB drive for your sound packs to get around the lack of internal storage? The Juno-X allows this, and these synths seem very similar.

Nice demo, Woody. I have my Xm for a few weeks now. Choosing and layering sounds is easier than it looks. I actually found it to be user friendly. The sequencer is an entirely different story, where I wished they would have used the JD-XI's approach. Oh well, not complaining, I love my Xm. :)

To get a both init scene + sound : - you just need to scroll to an Init scene - then select a part/model and scroll again to an Init tone Notice the left encoder under the screen will get you to the Init scenes and tones faster.

I was thinking that the big version would suit me better, but then I saw the size of it and realised it's just too big to fit on my stands where I have them at the moment. It seems to be more like the length of the 76 key MODX and the depth of the Jupiter X isn't small either!

Thanks Woody. The RD model I think can only go into part 1, but as far as I know that’s the only limitation. You can also disable the arp from changing the model selections in the settings menu. I think the software engineer in you is coming out when you slip up with “modal” :)

Good quick summary Woody. The iARP is fun ,but do find the screen way too small. Really needs a PC companion for sound creation (or I need better glasses!) Think the sound engine is good, lots of potential. That "Awakening" default scene is a beauty!

Nice demo Woody, but SH 101 is now Polyphonic by default. You can select Mono though. Also you failed to mention the powerful Zen Core engine in addition to the pre loaded classic synths. The Zen Core is where you can really get creative all be it with a bit of menu diving.

I'm really liking the XM. I also like the System-8. How is both the UI and menu diving on the XM? I've heard its a bit of a pain and more for someone with quite a bit of synth experience. I'm not a fan of a lot of menu diving. $1500 USD is a bit pricey for smaller unit IMO. I'd be inclined to go for a totally different synth like the Korg Prologue 16 at that price.
@WoodyPianoShack
@WoodyPianoShack 3 жыл бұрын
many people say the menu-diving is a pain, i tried to avoid it, it wasn't a great screen, small text and old eyes etc. yeah, it's steeply priced, no denying. hope to see the same sound engine in some other trickle-down synths in the future.
@IRIDEHARLEYS
@IRIDEHARLEYS 3 жыл бұрын
@@WoodyPianoShack Thanks for your reply. As much as I like what I see/hear, the menu driving would probably bug me. I've only played on synths for less than a year. Maybe I'll consider the System-8 instead as it seems more straight forward.

@@WoodyPianoShack Thanks for the info, I swear, today, I've sailed the rocky seas of the internet trying to find information on the XM's key size, so I really appreciate you clearing that up for me. I was going to buy the XM, but I just can't justify spending so much on it. It has has everything I want it to, such as speakers, battery powered option which is perfect for portability, but, I guess I'll rock with the JDXi for a few years until the XM's price drops. I really love the JDXi, but, the keyboard, it's worst than the key on my Yamaha PSS-16 keyboard.
