I bought it! I'm nearly 65 years old, it's the 1st Groovebox I've ever owned, and I've had it a week. I have some comments for viewers and for ROLAND...First- THE SOUNDS! They are simply stellar, and are the main reason I bought it. And there are over 3000 of them with almost NO duds! The build quality is excellent, it seems durable. Its size is just perfect, and being battery (or USB) powered, it is very portable. Love that it came with an SD Card. I knew in advance it's not as powerful as the MC707. The buttons, knobs and faders feel solid. (Pads are not velocity sensitive.) OK Roland....A few suggestions for a future update based on my week of ownership...(and please correct me if any of these are erroneous or don't make sense.): 1- Add a SONG MODE...to string the Scenes together. Please! 2- Make the Project Title be displayed after edits are made. 3- Add a Count-In or metronome. Please! 4- Add an Undo feature. 5- Add a "Favorites" marker for Sounds. There are just too many to have to hunt. 6- Improve the Measure/Beat display. After 2 measures go by, I'm lost. Make it cover all 128 Steps. 7- Increase the Note Length range greater than 4.99 in the Step Edit function...with the rotary knob. 8- Add an Append/Duplicate function for Phrases and/or Clips. 9- Improve the C1-C4 function so that the value doesn't "jump" from current position to knob position. It makes it hard to make smooth (filter) adjustments in performance. 10- Add a "Return To Safe/Default State" function to the C1-C4 knobs. After an edit, it's hard to remember what the Default setting was. (If nothing else, at least note the Default Values for parameters in the User Manual.) 11- Add a Clip Button "latch" option for selecting Scenes. In a live performance, this is a 2-handed operation (bad for guitarist). 12- Add a Shift Button "latch" option. Nearly every edit requires a Shift press. 13- Add an overall Output Volume feature to the Drum Track (in addition to the Fader)...similar to the Tone (Sound) editing feature. Overall....Thumbs Up, a great addition to a rig, albeit a tad pricey. I'm loving mine.

I chose the MC 707 for the better workflow but for portability (battery powered and small form factor) this one is a good alternative to the Novation Circuit (which I also own). But what I like most of Roland products is their sound. Huge collection of ready to use for non sound designers like me.
@circkus4 жыл бұрын
"9- Improve the C1-C4 function so that the value doesn't "jump" from current position to knob position." On page 40 of the Reference manual, it shows that if you press SHIFT+FILTER to go to the UTILITY menu, and select SYSTEM, there is a Knob Mode setting that can be changed to "CATCH", which means nothing changes until the knob has passed through the current setting. So if your note length is at 3, and your C4 knob is turned all the way to the left, it doesn't instantly make your note length 1. I'm still looking for a way to make note length grater than 4.99 without playing it in...

Yeah, I generally hate to be in the "this costs too much for what it is!" bandwagon, but honestly, can't really help it with this one, but to feel the same. With something like 300e, I'd be seriously thinking about getting one. But with 509 euros, with only 4 tracks, that's quite a lot to pay. Especially when you think about what other gear there are in the same-ish price range: Elektron Digitakt is about 635e, Digitone is 645e, Model:Samples is 439e, the new Electribes are around 400e, Blackbox is about 579e and so on.

I got this instead of Digitakt and MPC because the mc-101 is more portable. I got this instead of Model:Samples/Cycles because why have two devices when you can have one like the mc-101. I got this instead of circuit because the mc-101 sounded better to my ears. I got this in addition to my op-1 because the op-1 sounds a bit thin to me and the tape-mode was a chore to make a song on so I was attracted to mc-101's sound engine and clips/scenes. I also have an SP-404SX but my fingers were getting tired and it was hard to bring in sounds into it. So yeah, I got the MC-101! It's amazing. dude you can buy a pack of 2500mah batteries on ebay for 4 quid wtf? lol. Internal battery would have been nice though but jesus not a deal breaker, it even comes with a pack of 4 alkaline batts and an sd card, you want it to write music for you automatically too?
@Jason759134 жыл бұрын
@@KZbinSupportTeams Kyle's unintelligent complaint aside, this thing runs off 5VDC, like any USB-powered/charged device, being able to swap rechargeable AAs is great and all, or one could just power it off any portable battery bank for very long run times without needing to stop for a second to swap batteries. This strikes me as kind of weird. Not anything bad, just odd.

@@HotStrange Not really the point. No-ones ever going to mistakenly record an internal speaker unless its some lofi project. nor would you really use this as a main workhorse for beat creation. This synth is firmly placed in the novelty "chuck in your bag" arena of synths. I think an internal speaker is very useful in this situation, regardless of the sound quality. this is why they still put crappy speakers in volcas.

Seems like a moderately more flexible take on the novation circuit, for 60% more money. I I'm definitely curious to learn more, like polyphony per instrument or channel, or how much flexibility in sound design on whatever built in synth engines? For the price though I feel like you get more bang for buck out of the OPZ or if you can save up a bit longer, the Deluge. Or just save a couple hundred and get the circuit.

Is the sequencer on the MC101/707 comparable to Elektrons seq? Trig cond? Or just simple oldfashioned X0X seq?
@geecen5 жыл бұрын
Fero Povazan in the video for the 707 it there is a part where you can have a ‘mute probability’ which is like the chance trig condition. I understand that the mc101 is the same synth engine, but th reference manual is bad as does not include all parameters for some reason

It looks neat and all, but 499€ seems a bit steep for a toy that will be used sporadically, because of the extra cables and mess an extra gadget will bring to the table. A friend of mine will probably buy it so that I can borrow it. Perhaps ask 10 friends to split in, and share it throughout the year - so that the "tucked away collecting dust phases get limited". With a DAW, where you can move things around more easily than when you need to connect a gadget, record it - and then pack it away, I don´t really see the need. Now a DAW controller makes sense. So what can this do that a DAW controller can not?
@MiIIenia5 жыл бұрын
Operate without a computer? I see this more in the vein of something like the digitone, a more portable daw in a box. Still the price is definitely steep and missing important features the digitone has

Nice toy, but the price tag though is a bit exagerrated and the full-size one is UNREACHABLE. I am either saving up for OPZ or DT ... or even a wiser option; waiting to see what Korg and Novation have to offer the next year ...
@jarkokoo5 жыл бұрын
@David hill I second this. Don't wait, get the DT now. It's an amazing box. And on top of it all, it has 8 midi-out tracks, so it can pretty much function as your backbone for many other gear or VSTs you might want to sequence with it. And of course, its sequencer is super intuitive to use. The only reason for you to not get the DT is that, if you want to sample a LOT. DT doesn't have an awful lot of sampling storage. This all said, generally the waiting game hardly ever pays off, unless you know for sure what you'll be waiting for and that it really is going to come out in the near future. ;)
