The Roland MC-707 GROOVEBOX has everything electronic music producers need to create a song or perform a live set without a computer. The MC-707 is armed with an eight-track sequencer optimized for fluid production, our latest deep synthesis engine, a powerful sampler, massive effects palette and 16 ultra-sensitive pads for playing or sequencing drum parts, melodic basslines, or polyphonic chord progressions.
The MC-707 Video Manual series looks to dive deep into this powerful GROOVEBOX and takes you through the MC-707 in a sequence as if you turned the instrument on for the first time. We highly recommend viewing the Parts in order but we have also provided chapter links below for you to jump straight to what you need to know.
In this MC-707 Video Manual (Part Two), the chapters are:
00:18 Drum Kit Editing
17:04 Looper Tracks
29:41 Effects
45:27 Clips
1:08:58 Scenes
1:19:13 Clip Chain
About the Roland MC-707...
The MC-707’s eight-track sequencer is made for today's electronic-focused music styles and ever-evolving subgenres. The TR-REC step sequencer is just like those found on classic Roland drum machines, perfect for building rhythm parts quickly. There are also 16 ultra-sensitive pads for playing or sequencing drum parts, melodic basslines, or polyphonic chord progressions.
The MC-707 features our latest sound engine, which fuses virtual analog and modern PCM. It’s flexible, powerful, and lets you dig deep into its sonic capabilities. It has the sounds of legendary Roland rhythm machines and synthesizers that are the foundation of electronic music-including the TR-808, TR-909, TB-303, JUNO-106, and SH-101. But the MC-707 also looks forward, with modern digital and hybrid sounds perfect for creating future classics-today.
In addition to its deep synthesis engine, the MC-707 has a powerful sampler with on-the-fly recording that synchronizes to your project's tempo and works as an expandable platform that never gets stale. Keep things fresh with new loops, one-shots, phrases, and synth sounds-all available online.

Thank you for producing this, it's a valuable and useful tool to get more out of the unit. Your presentation is top notch for speed and finesse. My only request, if possible, is to allow LIVE chaining of clips, similar to how you create scenes. You can do a similar thing on the motif range to create a song out of patterns. Not sure how you'd implement it, but I'm confident it can be done using the current UI and an extra page for information in the O/S.

@@alexmax9832 Yeah I'm baffled why Roland went for clips over scenes. Scenes are already the building block of a song, stringing them together is all that is needed. It would be extremely useful for project arrangement and organization if an option to "Insert Row" appeared when a row of clips has been selected in the main work screen using the shift key. Likewise, an "Insert Clip" option appeared when a whole track was selected. Additional sub-options for "Insert-Paste" to insert a previously copied clip or row, as well as as "Insert-Blank" for just inserting a blank clip or row would also be very useful. We would love to see this functionality added in a near-future update.

Hey if you guys haven’t already, I recommend submitting feature requests to Roland. I sent suggestions for drum programming loop chance of sub step gate within a chance gated hit (so sometimes it will be a single, and others it might be a dual, triple, etc.), on the other side of chance, I requested a way to conditionally (numerically, like the OP-Z) gate steps and sub steps, rather than only having chance gates, and lastly, a way to sequence the scatter effects and then be able to use the knobs to tweak the sequenced scatter FX. I think the first two are quite possible, but maybe not so easy to implement the third, but why not ask? You can reach support from the website at www.roland.com/backstage/support, and either as that they forward your feature request or they will reply and tell you where to send it. I forwarded my communication this morning. I hope this helps! 🙂

@@dbeene36 not sure if you are talking live or step recorded. For step mode, when you are in the tones section programming a melody, there should be a red key between D# and F#, which is the ‘tie/rest’ key. As long as you are holding the desired note(s), you can tap the key and a tie will tell the seq to sustain. As soon as you let off, it becomes a rest key again. I hope this helps with your question!

@@mh22xv u srs?? If it's reading midi data from a controller, that means that those cc's are goin thru to it & literally controlling it... So theoretically can b recorded like any other midi data as standard... That's bizarre... I haven't recorded that as I put my unit away soon after getting it & rebuilding the studio but it should work.. What OS u running?? Apparently fw1.6 address afew midi issues.. Like CCsend frm knobs which was a surprise wen I discovered that was disabled .. . I also know this unit can have tracks /scenes controlled/triggered via midi interface on ipad app similar to Ableton push.. Which for my use would be a heavensend coz u can't switch scenes on the fly while muting certain sections, allowing one to trigger a one measure break & flip it's mutes halfway through before a kick off (as example.. A pitch drop with a following rise in reverse ) I'm surprised that this happened. Can u chk if there are midi filters in place on the mc to only record certain controls?? I know all the later mc's & the Yams allow you to filter data types, be it sysex, mtc, cc, pc, etc etc or if event chase is enabled & if it's updating ? Pitch & modulation have their own commands so if u can hear those changes made it means the ur controller is configured it's channel & commands correctly. But, it depends on the command & I believe modulation is a sysex command, much like the tb3... I could be wrong so don't quote me on that, but this is strange... Have u gone into the clip edit section to see what data is being retained?? Have you tried reassigning the commands to OTHER controller numbers which the mc can record ?? U gta go to the section that looks like an old skool tracker (or a phrase edit page frm the rm1x/rs7000) & scroll down the event list to chk the command. Maybe record those commands internally using the mc, go to the edit page & suss out the commands frm there & assign that command number your controller.. Convoluted I know but it's the only workaround I can think of. I noticed this unit has afew midi nuances not found as standard as u would find in most other midi devices, such as controller numbers for effects & whatnot...

@@PedroAnastazi Yes, it’s bizarre. I’ve checked a lot of forums. People have the same problem. I asked some great synth/hardware reviewers like Loopop and Bo Beats and they said it’s not uncommon for devices like groove boxes not to record pitch bend or modulation. So I guess those like myself who use PB and Modulation all the time for a way to ad feeling and expression when making music are left behind. BR/ Mack

@@mh22xv very odd as like i said, if u can hear the change from a midi controller, then the change is being read and understood, meaning it can also be recorded... theoretically... unless a filter is in place which affects its means of recording. ... Have you tried manually inserting the controller change parameters in the editor? The page which looks like a tracker or RM1x/RS7000... Try that... Id suggest u try out something like midi ox and check out the midi stream to and from everything and follow the chain of events. I'd also suggest u test it with USB as well as midi... Or test with several other controllers... If none of that works, you might need to record the motion directly from the hardware itself...

Please, Roland, add an auto-slice function for the looper, this way one could do live remixes in real time without pressing stop! 🙏🏻 Checkout the Octatrack.
@PedroAnastazi
@PedroAnastazi 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, i dont think thats gna happen coz the slicer in the sample recorder/editor is only workable before the sample is allocated a pad and space on the card and loaded in the "ROM".. not really a rom but whatever.. .point is, once youve edited your sample, thats it... you cant go back and retweak it or normalise it or run a compressor on it or whatever unless you resample it...which is dead easy and probably a better option anyway... BTW if you want auto slice, its there, but if you want LIVE auto slice and auto resequence you gta grab an RS7000 or record your scatter triggers.... which i think is what Roland were counting on. Roland seem to have forgotten that many younger people looking at this machine havent had to work with limited sampling time or features ... TBH from what Ive seen in the industry going back 25yrs now (yes i stil have my mc303) , 32gb would NOT have killed Roland when it comes to internal memory... or jack up the Ram buffer on this... They could have also coded the unit to stream or record straight to/from memory card, but they didnt do that either... if it could stream to and from card, then we could have virtually limitless sample time and virtually any kinda editing possible, BUT you gta remember that if youre streaming samples from a memory card, processing those, and THEN wanting to stream those back OUT the USB to your DAW, then youre going to bottleneck the USB bus... 32gb would have cost less than $25 to fit and been enough for half hour of stereo . Adding to the Ram buffer probably more expensive but when you consider what can be done with 64mb (you read that right) then it coes down to milkin as much from the unit as opposed to what it can do for you without tangent thinking... Point of this, my RS7000 DOES do this live slicing and live remixing youre refering to, and its all done in ram.. .and I can undo... and i can set or record or resample or whatever... BUT as low as 64mb ram is, with a 64mb memory card.. (yes, 64megabytes..) and its still enough to cover an entire album when sampling smartly. A sampler like this isnt designed to behave as a multitrack recorder... mind you, Id like sampling features post pad allocation and post saving to card, but alas...

I am interested in the MC-707. I have a few questions that I want to ask about it. Can songs be made from scenes? Is paste a merge or overwrite operation? Can MFX settings be transferred between projects? Can pad mode settings, specifically chords from chord mode, be transferred between projects? Can note phrases be entered and triggered as one shots?
@PedroAnastazi
@PedroAnastazi 3 жыл бұрын
Make it easy for ya... Ppl need to remember this is a HW sequencer and HW is very different to SW. I just hope Roland keep supporting this unit and dont ditch it or the Zencore anytime soon. To your questions... 1) Can songs be made from scenes? A - there are "pattern chain" abilities since FW 1.6 Then theres what could be considered mute memory. You also have the scatter ability which is a further 16 variations which can be programmed and then triggered into or from any clip. BUT.. even with this, and before FW 1;6, you had the ability to chain one clip to another. This was only on the lip level, not the track or scene level... If all you want to do is hit play and have a linear playback, then you can do that by chaining your clips individually one clip to the next clip so long as your sound source is CLIP not track. Since pattern chainging came about you can sequence scenes/tracks into a sequence and while it plays back, toss in afew mutes or scatters between changes... Id like to see a scene pattern record mode, like the way in which ableton records your live sequence perforamnce into a linear timeline.. that would be nice.. Since FW 1.6 the pattern chain function has been reintroduced as a formal operation, so you can do a whole chain of scenes playing back in sequence. But there arent many live sequencing options if you use this function. Itll play live and play in sequence, but it wont let u jump in halfway through your song to do a spontaneous tb303 solo... So there are at 2 ways to sequence a song, Pattern/scene chain and/or clip chain which sends one clip to next clip. 2) Is paste a merge or overwrite operation? A- Depends on what youre doing and what record mode youre in. Im sure theyre working on this overlooked necesty when it comes to copy/paste/trim/extract/copy append paste to/ clear filters etc .... buuuuut in the meantime, make a backup of everything. If you want to append a track, you have to extend it first, THEN paste whatever extraction you want into that new appendage into its respective empty spot in the clip. Thats the only way I can figure at this time, Another option is overdub record MIDI OUT while switching live. Ensure that youre sending midi data out to whatever receiving channel you want ie, if you have a 1 measure pattern here and another 1 mesaure pattern there, but you want pattern A to cycle into pattern B, you have to append pattern A and paste pattern B into that blank spot of A.. If however you route the midi out of those 2 clips A and B to another channel C and record that channel as a tone CLIP (not track), then whatever is sent to that channel is recorded. Youre pretty much resampling from the source, but in midi form... Thats an old trick from the old days but yeah id like a visual represntation of each clip where one can literally slot sections of other clips into each other... like the RM1x and RS7000 does.. 3) Can MFX settings be transferred between projects? A- No need. You can set up ANY clip with your MFX settings, save it with a name like 'myFX Dist1" and "myFXDist2" "myFX Chor4" {etc etc and so on. NOW... that clip with your effects and settings is accessible to/from ANY project, and I believe its even available when using Zenbeats VSTi but im not sure... havent tried that yet...but i do know you can set all this up IN Zenbeats and the VSTi Im putting together a series of clips and project template projects for different uses. Some for live use with Ableton, some for live use with external inputs, some for studio, some for hard mastering and others as scratch pad. You can always paste attributes from one clip to another. Just remember, with effects, you can have up to 8 mfx, plus revverb plus chorus, plus one master effect used all at once, unlike most HW sequencers which only allow one mfx per project or one mfx per track. OK so long as the SOURCE of that clip is CLIP and NOT track, then that effect will be married to that clip. You can erase all the note data and just keep it blank with the metadata holding fx and midi settings etc and like i said, access that clip for use in any project, much like a .wav sample. You can build a bank of these, which is what im doing as I write this... 4) Can pad mode settings, specifically chords from chord mode, be transferred between projects? A= theyre THAT simple to set up that its not needed, however just create a blank template project and simply use that as your starting point. I do that with all my DAWS and NLEs anyway with all my routing and inputs and outputs set up before i even import my raw material. In this case, its no different. Create a template, save it as a master preset starter and launch it whenever starting a new project. Immediately save it with another name and your setttings are retained. Another option, is to do that with your scatter config, effects, va syth/pcm oscilator settings, matrix routings if youre into the whole VAnalog oldskool style of sythesis and whatnot through to midi configuraiton and audio routing from external etc. Easy... 5) Can note phrases be entered and triggered as one shots? Are u refering to the old MC and JP8000 and GaiaSH01 RPS phrase repeat? The "realtime phrase record"... Good question and great for use before a break or a drop but I dont think this has that. 128 phrases to a project and any one of those can be triggered whenever you please through scene memories or mute memories, depending on what mode youre in. Then theres the scatter function which can be set to simply play back certain sources and certain effects, all programmable, but im unsure how far that goes when it comes to meshing/blending clips. I mean it would be good to be able to drop a rise or a drum roll live over a scene before the next one kicks in, but i think the closest thing to this would be scene and mute memory and live scene memory drop ins. I mean on the RS7000/RM1x I can drop and mute and change sections/scenes within half a measure live, I cant do that here and its doing my head in... Im also rryin to connect my Ableton live controller to this and literally mute/unmute all tracks and clips whenever i choose... if I can control scenes with one machine, and trigger mutes with another, I use then use the same breaks and drises and drops in different variations simply using mutes instead of having to program a new clip for each short break... can do this with an Ipad, and all my yamaha gear from 15+ years ago lets me do this, but I cant do that here... Oh well, cant win them all...

Is it possible to apply distortion effect only on channel where I have TB3's audio in and not on whole master with drum included( distortion not affecting the drum and other channels with set up tones) Will be grateful for answer...and help. Have both mc 707 and tb3 and I cant figure out how to do it if possible. Seems like this distortion effect can be used only as master fx disforting whole track and channels without possibility of separation to only for ex channel 8. Am I right? Or maybe there is possibility to set it up properly?

Hello! Maybe you could help with my question. Or someone from community) I can't assign something like "velocity control reverb send". When try something like: 1 From "VELOCITY" to "REV" Depth +63 Nothing happens. While if I change "REV" to "PAN" the effect definitely heard. So, what I'm doing wrong? Is "REV" parameter in matrix is "send" reverb parameter, am I right? "DLY" doesnt work either, btw. p.s. both reverb and delay are on as global effects and can be heard when I use FX or C1-4 knobs

Please add "last step" to the motion functionality so motion can run on 5 steps while sequence runs on 16/32 steps, you've done this partially with tr8s LFO....that is a powerful creative feature , 300 EQs in this unit is just too tedious to work with..... and also mute motion per track or knob would help ....editing the step LFOs is too painful in 21st century yes this unit is powerful as mentioned hundred times in this video, but doing a sound creation with partials is too slow as it is on JdXi..., Another powerful feature would be to edit multiple drum pads at the same time (select pads edit...blah blah) the same for the steps of sequencer , if I need to change velocity on multiple steps I need to go ONE BY ONE ... I know zen-engine is powerful but some of the sequencing features in this machine are still from 19th century ....instead of pushing engines via cloud, sell me iPad based clip editor when I can really fast move, copy and rename clips, and lastly The tone track should have the beautiful random mute function so my 16-32-64 steps are not static

The funny thing is, what you're asking for was available on the old mc units with the turn of a knob... I'm not kidding.. & on the rm1x/rs7000 this was available through event editing as well as the awesome grid groove functions.. Literally behaving like the custom lfo map here but wit more tweakability.. I'm really surprised how much had been left out of this, such as the arpeggios, the rec count in options (I prefer count in to note, meaning recording starts when I hit a key) live overdub recording, pitch corrected one shot "gate trigger" sampled loops loaded onto one bank as opposed to one pitch corrected track running one sample per clip, actual multi sampling (just coz this pitch algorithm is good, doesn't mean it can accurately represent & correctly playback a velocity sensitive sample.. Velocity is VERY different to volume.. Sound fonts & data streaming frm sd card would have been a great solution to most of these issues... The wish list goes on..

just be aware you cannot chain clips then record into the chain so for midi recording the limit is 8 bars and then it drops out of record regardless of the chain length. So any musician capable of playing for more than 8 bars (which is most musicians) will find this very frustrating. The good news is you have a whole minute of audio, Roland really are spoiling us!

this thing really needs another update soon. Last step function is useles if we cant move first-last step knobs when first sw and last sw are off. Patterns between pads are impossible to copy, and there is a terrible bug (search yt: Roland MC 707 | Firmware 1.72 BUG!). Is Roland going to listen to their customers finally?!

[UPDATE: FIXED - THANKS!] Major Clip chain issue: tones with longer release times cut off when changing to new clip. This makes chain useless to create longer sequences using a tone that uses longer sustained notes. And definitely can’t be called a song mode.
@NickDimmock
@NickDimmock 3 жыл бұрын
Yep, this is definitely a problem (in 1.50 at least) with both tone tracks that have a long decay, and long drum samples. I've reported it to Roland support. Hopefully it'll be fixed quickly, because clip chaining has a lot of potential for creating almost generative sequences (as each channel can have clip chains happening at different divisions). But as it stands, it's not really usable.

Is there any way to delete unwanted preset tones? I find it such a pain to go through a billion techno stabs and other stuff i don't care about to find something i actually like. By the time I find a nice preset, i'm tired and the inspiration is gone. Will need to sell my mc707 otherwise cause there are too many presets, it's bogging the process down so so much.

the old MCs played project after prject while retaining mutes and tempo.. this is a sampler.. most if not all samplers aside from the akais and the RS7000 (and i'll explain in a minute) have this same loading issues... The akais and the RS7000 load all their sample data into RAM along with the projects.. from there, the only limitation is the actual sequencer and project track settings and routings..Now this inabiity to play one project after the other was a major gripe on the RM1x and RS7000 coz the OLD MCs could in fact move from song to song and keep going... But this is coz theyre VERY different sequencers with different engines... I believe the akais simply allowed you to access sample banks and blocks/scenes similar to the way this handles its scenes Its not a bug...

I'm enjoying the video and watching the compressor part but I honestly don't (or hardly) hear any difference while you're tweaking the compressor(s) settings.. Probably because you're using a unique compressor per pad? I think the result would be more audible if you'd use a single compressor for a few pads - say kick, hihats and cymbal - so we could hear the compressor kick in..?

@PedroAnastazi
@PedroAnastazi 3 жыл бұрын
I think it's funny wen ppl use lfo ramping to mimic a side chain.. They're VERY DIFFERENT.. but side chain routing would be nice to have in the sound creation section, such as within the matrix or simply routing one track thru another, & having respective frequencies tweaked to however u need... Coz lfo ramp isn't adjusting the frequencies... Side chaining is all bout frequency as it should be.. But I agree 100% & seeing as the unit allows for freq pass thru (like a mixer) then Side chaining should be possible, evn on a basic insert /send configuration... Where that feature is limited by hw, it can possibly be done with routing an assignable output for track X back into the unit to track Y which is influenced/side chained by the drum track.. So anything in track Y is chained allowing one to swap clips as they please.. Its definitely possible coz the matrix is there... Its just how each track behaves wit each other that is the million dollar question...
