Great review and beautiful playing. If you had to choose between RD-88 and RD-2000?
@okay19044 жыл бұрын
With the exception of the Acoustic Pianos, which have a bit of a short decay as my only complaint, and are ok, but many of the sounds are a bit whimpy, acceptable but not stand out... will do the job if you have nothing better, or cannot afford to spend more... I think it will sell in loads, its a Roland, it will be reliable, and for the most part, for those playing live, there are already many challenges to face, such as the room, and quality of monitors and all the other issues that come along with every event, that it could just be the ticker for those who cannot afford an RD2000. In a live setting, for a gigging musician starting out, the whimpiness of the majority of sounds will not be too glaring, and on a positive note, compared with the Yamaha CP88, this one has lots of sounds....enough variety to find something that will be useful, most of these are probably rehash of Rolands pedigree - remastered, reprogrammed... Will do the job, sound wise not spectacular in general, like a decent General MIDI keyboard......... My comments may seem a bit harsh, cos I comparing it to the best that is available such as sampled instruments on a computer, or Nord Piano or the Roland RD2000. Obviously to bring it down to a price point, corners have been cut, and any attempt to step into the market segment of the RD2000, its bigger brother, have been avoided. I detect a certain brevity in the samples, very little natural modulation or variety or velocities, in the original samples, lots of looping, to fit in within a memory size...... The only other competition IMHO is Rioland's FP90 which is about the same price(give or take $200 more ) ...would be interesting to compare them side by side in a store..../demo room....

Okay1 Agree. I’ve not played the FP90, but even the FP30 has a slightly better piano sound than this to my ears. This one is really kind of brittle, kind of like the Yamaha pianos from the mid ‘90s.

Thanks for the kind words, N! The RD-88 does not have recording functionality built into it, but you could do this with an external looper pedal such as the Boss RC1. I was about to buy the fp30 or or may be the fp60 for home, mostly piano playing. Is this a good alternative that I should consider? Does it have the same keyboard action?
@sweetwater4 жыл бұрын
Hello! The FP30 and FP60 are both excellent home pianos. The FP60 does have a deeper variety of sounds, and the internal speakers are a bit more powerful and substantial than the FP30. They share the same PHA4 88 key weighted piano keybed. The RD-88 on the other hand is a different style instrument - it is more of a stage piano than a home piano. It has the same PHA4 keybed as the two above, but a more intentional integration with Mainstage for live playing, plus control of multiple zones for different simultaneous sounds. If you're playing in a band, the RD-88 is right for you. But if you're looking to practice piano at home, you'd be more inclined towards the FP series. @@sweetwater Thanks. I've never owned an RD, but I've played trumpet in several bands where the pianist really held his own on an RD. We can compare sounds and actions in isolation, but a good instrument is much more than the sum of its virtues (Hmmm, could I be the first to coin that phrase?) and the bottom line is that RDs work brilliantly in bands. Now that there's an RD I can actually carry, it is a bit tempting.

Hey y’all, I’m a guitar player looking to add something like this to my studio to play piano/key parts of my favorite classic rock songs and have around for my young boys to begin learning music on. I know very little about these things, and have also found the korg krome ex88. What are the differences between that and this that would sway things one way or the other? Thanks for any help 🤘🏻🎸

For basic home and educational use, don’t rule out the less expensive FP series pianos, which have the exact same keybed as this instrument and excellent basic piano and ep sounds, but cost a lot less and are designed to be played primarily through the built in speakers. The downside is that they have far fewer sounds and a much more limited feature set. The Krome is a workstation, meaning it is designed to play full arrangements by itself, but you have to dive deep into programming the instrument to take full advantage of this capability. A stage piano like the RD is designed to make sounds accessible quickly; it’s designed to be played, not programmed. Workstations generally aren’t as intuitive to use as a stage piano and can be intimidating to an inexperienced or impatient user.

Chris Walton thanks, good info. I’ll take a look at the FP. And while I like features and options and such, I have quite the time suck in the guitar world, so probably don’t need to add more to that equation.

Chris Walton so I looked into the FP, looks cool. Still, more expensive than the krome. Does it make sense to get the krome and just use it for the same features I’d use the FP piano for, but then have the rest on board to mess with if I get interested in it?

Joe Sanders there are different models to the fp-series. Fp90 is their flagship and a bit pricey. If you take the fp30 you have a more basic model probably sufficient for the needs you described. That should be cheaper than a Korg Krome (at least in Europe it is).

@@lenardwei9455 this RD is pricey as well, FP60 is likely a better alternative if this thing doesn't have features that FP60 lacks for a particular musician
