Thanks for a great review Stu. I’ve obtained one of these this week and am very impressed so far. The main piano sound is particularly lovely. I like the fact that they’ve labelled all the rear inputs on the top so you can see what you’re plugging into from the front. Compared to an old FA-08 (same price used as a new RD88), in terms of sound quality and on board old synth tones, which one will you choose ?
@MerriamPianos5 ай бұрын
Hi there! While there is some overlap, these are very different instruments with different intended contexts of use. If you are looking to any type of production work, the FA-08 would be the way to go given its extended functionality. However, if you are predominantly looking for a digital piano with lots of built-in sounds for at home practice and performance situations, the RD88 is a bit more appropriate in my opinion. Personally, I would give the edge to the RD88's ZEN-Core engine for onboard synth sounds. However, it should be noted that it comes down to personal subjectivity of course.

Wow, what a difference between the two I see what you mean by the silky smooth playing of this RD 88. I’m a beginner total beginner. Just the feel of it it’s silky smooth and the feel of the keys because of the way the sound is just so softly elevated as you press down on the keys it’s a whole new experience. I tried the FP-30x at guitar center yesterday and wasn't a huge fan... I have the Komplete Kontrol S88 Mk2 as of now but want to sell it so I can actually go on gigs and bring it to friends without bringing speakers, my laptop, and everything else. How would you say the RD-88 action compares to the FP-30x and the Komplete Kontrol if you've played it? Thanks!
@MerriamPianos2 ай бұрын
Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thanks for the question! I have not played the S88 MK2, but I have lots of experience with the FP30X and RD88. The FP30X and RD88 both use the same PHA4 action, so the feel of the actions are virtually the same. If you're looking for an alternate action, the RD2000EX and FP90X pianos use the higher-end PHA50 action, which is a longer key with wooden side-panelling. It is a heavier touch than the PHA4 action. Thanks and hope this helps!
@scarsstitches6368 ай бұрын
I went to a store to try the RD-2000. I didn't like the PHA-50 as much as I enjoyed the PHA-4 on the FP series that were in the showroom. Solution: I ordered an RD-88. You nailed it when you said that the RD-88 is an FP-30X meeting the RD-2000!
@MerriamPianos8 ай бұрын
That is certainly fair! That is why it is always a good idea to demo the pianos in person when possible. More expensive does not always lead to a more preferable piano experience. There is definitely some overlap between the two (particularly with the inclusion of the ZEN-Core engine), but they are not exactly the same type of instrument. The RD88 is designed for live stage use, whereas the FANTOM-08 is a workstation that can be used to do full arranging and programming within the machine.

For me, the action is of utmost importance. And when it it comes to the action, the first consideration is key repetition. There is one piece of music that should be used by every digital piano reviewer to demonstrate the repetition capability of a piano’s action. That piece is Scarlatti’s sonata in d minor k141 played up to speed.

Depends on what you're looking for. If you need a great amount of tone choice, layers, live playing and gigging I'd choose the RD 88. If you're more so into the acoustic piano, the action of the keys, I'd go for the FP60x. Action on FP60x is better than the RD88 and speakers are better also.

@@Jason75913 Roland used to have several grades of the PHA4 action (standard, premium and concert), this no longer the case, they standardized the PHA4 in all their recent devices, Stu confirms it in one of his vids too. The difference you feel uf any, might be related to the connection with the sound, it happened to me while trying the FP30X and the HP702 I guess it was, they both mount a PHA4 action but they felt differently because of the way they played, there was a better sonic connection with the HP702. Hi. A few questions, if you'd be so kind - the Roland manual is hopelessly superficial. #1 - How do you change the RD88's output volume to Mac Garageband? Several patches, i.e., normal sounds, e.g., "Dirty Wurlie", are overloading when I record. The drum rhythms have a window which contains their velocity, so it was easy peasy w them, but the Concert Grand, Tine Electric, etc.? No, not that I see. #2 - How do you get in and out of the many "sub-categories" of the over-arching categories? For instance, SOMEHOW I arrived at categories which contained many more instruments, sub-categories like "Pop Piano, Harmonica", etc., which let me access sounds I hadn't seen. So, how do I get in and out of those, out and back to the normal over-arching categories? #3 - related - How do I get OUT OF sub-categories that just have a bunch of indecipherable numbers about which I have no clue? What the heck are those? So far they're just an annoyance and I don't care. And, lastly #4 - very related to all this, How do I get in and out of these sub-categories without triggering certain heretofore normal patches, e.g., plain old "#1 Concert Grand" to suddenly go "dual" and have asterisks? That is very annoying, frustrating, and confusing. I imagine all these questions are very annoying too, lol, hopefully not confusing. If you could answer whatever you have time to, I'd be very grateful. Even my "genius" friend, Chat GPT, $20/mo. is of no help. Thank you. Great channel, btw. A real MUSICIAN'S channel, by a guy who can REALLY PLAY - what a concept! 🙂
@MerriamPianosАй бұрын
Hi there, Brent from Merriam Music here. Thank you so much for the kind words about our channel! And thank you for writing in with your questions. I will do my best to answer them, but - without having an RD88 on hand, or being able to troubleshoot with your exact hardware/software setup - my ability is a bit limited. 1. It sounds like this might be an issue with the software settings opposed to the settings on the RD88. Most DAWs like Garageband have the ability to adjust the input level of tracks. You may have to lower that setting to prevent the RD88's direct line out feed from clipping. This can also be done with an audio interface being between the RD88 and DAW. An audio interface will allow you to lower the gain and avoid clipping. 2. I am not sure if I understand this question correctly. But, the buttons labelled by instrument type (e.g. Piano, E. Piano, Clav/Mallet, etc.) are how the instrument sounds are organized and divided. So, if you hit those buttons and use the navigation arrows, you will be able to to quickly scan through the various onboard sounds of each sub-category. 3. I am not sure what you are referring to here, so - unfortunately - I cannot offer any guidance or support. 4. Once again, I am a little confused by this question as scanning through the various onboard patches should not automatically engage that patch. If I recall correctly, you will need to actually hit the enter button to enable the patch. Thanks and hope this helps! Perhaps, one of our helpful RD88 users here can chime in with some more navigation tips to help you out as well. :)
@frankfeldman6657Ай бұрын
@@MerriamPianos Thanks for the reply. Let me fasten on one particular question then. I'm asking about the difference between the over-arching categories, the broad ones that are represented by the 6 or 8 buttons on the keyboard, that appear normally, when you just hit, e.g., "Piano", or "Strings", and the much more detailed categories (I wish I could attach a picture!), e.g., within pianos there are these sub-categories: Acoustic, pop, rock, electric, etc., that will appear in that window AT TIMES. And when you rifle through THOSE categories, you see many, MANY more sounds than you normally see. If you don't know what I'm talking about, I'm not sure what to say - I'm pretty sure I'm not dreaming it, lol. Anyway, the question would be how to access those detailed categories in the window VOLUNTARILY, and how to get back to what one normally sees - there has to be some combination of buttons I inadvertently push.

Thanks for your detailed and professional reviews, they are all extremely helpful. I bought my Roland Rd-88 three weeks ago, I am really enjoying it, the sound quality using headphone is amazing, however when I connect it to the pair of monitor speakers I have (CR5X), I get really a very poor sound quality specially for treble and high notes ( I use a set of high quality TRS cables). Do you have any recommendations how to fix this? Any suggestion for an affordable monitor speakers I can use to get a high quality sound? This is really bothering me and I really can't play for anyone else due to this poor sound quality. PS. The built in speakers in RD-88 are only good for personal practise, they are not designed for performance ( even in small venues) at all.
@Gilotopia4 жыл бұрын
I have tried the fp-30, 60 and 90 in the store and they had the exact same problem. They have great sound though the on-board speakers but it's like line out doesn't have some processing step. You could try running the headphones out through a mixer in the mic input rather than the instrument input.
@alicaramba76804 жыл бұрын
It's likely because you are listening RD88 through headphones very loudly, so once you switch to speakers your ears needs to get accustomed to sound at much lower level. I suggest to play RD88 by using only monitor speakers for a few days and not to use headphones at all, maybe you will find it sounds better. Next, connect headphones to line out (L/mono) jack of RD88, pan current patch to the left and compare sound between L/mono out and phones out through headphones, of course, at approximate levels (output of phones out socket is amplified, so you will need to put volume down). Check this with a few different patches. If there is a big discrepancy in sound or you hear additional noise/sound artifacts that means your RD88 is faulty, or at least some part is faulty, and you should send it back to be refurbished and point out a problem. Of course, it could be your speakers are trash. They has their own phones out so compare sound of it to the direct sound from RD88's phones out.
@MerriamPianos4 жыл бұрын
Although there's no official word from Roland on this, I too have noticed that some of the headphone enhancements are missing from the line-outs. This probably isn't an error by Roland, my guess is that it's done on purpose so it's easier to mix with i.e. a flatter / neutral response. So two suggestions already made here: one, take the headphone mix as a line-out (prob the easiest), or if you were looking for an extremely great inexpensive set of monitors, the iLoud Micro Monitors from IK Multimedia are just sensational for the price. Less than the CR5's and they've been compared to the Genelec 8010's.
@selftrue6704 жыл бұрын
My Roland RD-80 has the exact same issue: Great build quality, great action, great sound through headphones, sounds like garbage through even good monitors. In 3 years, I still haven't figured it out.
@metalplatedfacejob4 жыл бұрын
might I suggest that you not connect the output of the keyboard directly to the monitors if you are. Monitors generally want a line level signal at +4 dbu.....check the specs on the keyboard output, it's most likely at -10 dbu if its a line level signal at all. This means that its also most likely unbalanced if it is a line level output. You would want to use a regular guitar cable and not a balanced TRS cable. The sound degradation your getting is due to miss matched impedance. try this, hook it up to a mixer with high Z inputs, these are made for instrument connections, then send the mixer output to your monitors. You can get a decent 6 channel mixer for 100 bucks, this should solve your problem. The other work around is to get a stereo DI box that will convert the keyboard output to microphone level and running that to the mic inputs of the mixer and then to your monitors, some prefer the sound that a DI imparts on their instrument over the built in High Z on budget mixers.

I'm however very happy with the overall sound and keyboard action that IMHO isn't too heavy or too light and is even acceptable for playing organ sounds. I love the pitch and modulation wheels as well as the 8 real time controller knobs but it seems to be a chore when it comes to adding new Zencore sounds. I can’t explain my situation on a youtube comment but basically, I have been used to taking a piano with me to my gigs and plugging it into my computer and using Ivory II pianos plug to have a solid piano sound. I bought this Roland so I would have a solid sound without having to bring my computer but I can’t get the usb out to do anything with my yamaha mix board and the quarter inch out sounds like shit.. I need help
@MerriamPianos3 жыл бұрын
I'm not familiar with your Yamaha Mix Board, but the USB Audio Interface will usually require a full computer in order to load the right USB drivers and receive the digital audio. The intended application for the USB audio is to interface with a DAW, such as Logic, Protools, Ableton etc... my understanding is that it won't be able to send audio direct to a mixing device. However, taking stereo out 1/4" shouldn't be sending any discernibly different audio signal than the USB would (with perfect listening conditions and top-end monitors or headphones some difference might be detectible, but this is more of a fidelity issue vs a "tonal" issue). Not sure if any of this is helpful, but good luck! -Stu

The RD88 does not have the RD2000's Stage Piano sound onboard. However, it does have the RD1000's default piano sound onboard, which you might find to be fairly comparable. As far as accessing the RD2000's Stage Piano sound via the ZEN-Core engine, I don't believe that particular patch has been made available as of this time. However, they are constantly updating the available sounds and patches, so I may be mistaken on that front.

@Jason759132 жыл бұрын
It is Zen-Core, the same main sound engine as their Fantom and Fantom-0 keyboards, MC-707 and MV-1 grooveboxes, and their Juno-X keyboard. RD-88 has far, far better piano samples than any other Zen-Core product, but because it is a Zen-Core product, you can make custom sounds on their other keyboards and grooveboxes or Zenology Pro VST and import those sounds into the RD-88. RD-88 also has an older SuperNatural engine if you like those pianos, but it will not sound as good as the RD-88's main Zen-Core pianos.

There are 3799 sounds on board which you can find on the list of tones at the support site of Roland. When you search on google you can even find excelsheets with the tones. They vary from epianos, brass sounds, synths, trumpet, guitars, flutes to helicopters, seashore, rain, gunshots. You can vary on these tones and create new ones by layering three different tones or vary with the parameters. And if 3799 sounds are not enough you can buy additional new tones via Roland. I've bought the RD88 in november this year and can not imagine running out of tones.😄

Thanks for your help, but I have one last question. So when I I look at my bank, the highest number of sounds it goes to is 400, but I’m pretty sure there’s a lot more than 400, because when I go on Dual or Split, and press enter to look at the dual and split banks, there is a whole new bank with many new sounds that aren’t in my original bank. Is this new, bigger bank exclusive to split and dual or is there a way to access this bank without being in split and dual?

You're very welcome! There are more than 400 sounds available. You can view a complete list of sounds from Roland at the following site: static.roland.com/assets/media/pdf/RD-88_SoundList_multi01_W.pdf Some sounds are under the "Scene" list while others are under the "Sound List" and separated by banks and categories. The following article provides a thorough breakdown of how to access the various sounds and banks: discover.hubpages.com/entertainment/Understanding-the-Sound-List-for-the-Roland-RD-88-Digital-Keyboard-How-to-Move-Between-Scenes-Tones-and-Banks

As mentioned earlier each zone consist of up to three tones. When Roland is referring to more than 3000 tones it's referring to the tones not the zones. There are around 400 zones but there are 3799 tones. You can search the tones when editing a zone and you can write the created sound in an INIT zone and give it a name. You just have to follow the instructions in the video I've mentioned earlier. Good luck!

How is polyphony NA ?
@titoisquierdo34464 жыл бұрын
Hi , Does anyone know why in dual mode piano/pad for example, polyphony reduces very very much ? Is it possible to fix some where in the menu ? I've tried, but can't find . Many thanks
@robertstrong89664 жыл бұрын
Dual mode plays two notes sounding two different tones, simultaneously from each key you play. Polyphony counts the number of notes AND voices. Even if key-note played is the same, another voice counts as another "note." Some pad tones are already made up of two or more tones. Each individual tone counts for one note of polyphony. Example: if you play a run (glissando or arpeggio) from bass to treble with the damper pedal held on, with one tone, say piano - lets say you sounded 60 notes (piano tone only) Now add one dual tone, that means 120 notes were played. If the dual pad voice had two blended tones (Strings & Choir for example) that would mean 3 times the 60 notes you played, or 180 notes total (with the piano, and 2-voice pad = 3 tones per note played). If the polyphony is 128 notes max, all notes played after the 128 max was reached, delete previous notes, to make available play for latest played notes--so notes which were first played, in order, drop out. Roland does not reveal the polyphony on the RD88. (Roland FP 30 polyphony is 128. My Yamaha Genos has 256 note polyphony, and I've not yet experienced any notes/tones dropping out, even with massive ensembles, and the damper pedal on.)
@titoisquierdo34464 жыл бұрын
@@robertstrong8966 thank you very much for your answer ... One more question ..for example clavia nord that are the most popular pianos for church worship today , they only have 120 note polifony ... If I buy one of those , I'll have the same problem ? Thanks!!!
@robertstrong89664 жыл бұрын
@@titoisquierdo3446 I have no experience with Nord. However, on any keyboard ,120 or higher note polyphony will provide good sound for most playing. Only when you layer many tones, and use the damper pedal for glissando or arpeggio, will you hear noted drop out. (Also, keyboards that have automatic chord accompaniment: when using these, very high numbers of notes and tones are used for styles played; then even two voice melodies will have drop outs.) If you mostly play one or two voices, you will not hear notes drop-out because you rarely exceed 128 note polyphony. For sure avoid cheaper keyboard models with only 64 note polyphony. If brands don't state their polyphony, it likely means the keyboard has lower than standard polyphony, The standard today is 128 note polyphony.

Try both if you can. The keybed on each feels totally different (the PHA4 the RD uses feels much better, I think). But their purposes are different, too. The Juno is a workstation, so if you need the sequencer, vocoder, and limited sampling capability, that's what it's made for. If you don't need all that and just want a solid digital piano that happens to have a workstation's worth of patches, the RD is probably the better bet.

The RD88 gives you quite a bit of control over the piano tones in particular - there are a number of ways you could modify this to be more Yamaha like, using a combination of the EQ, Compressor, and SN editing. I'd try changing the voicing to slightly dark, upping the mid range on the EQ just a touch, and see where that leaves you. Also, because the P515 has such heavy action, that might also be contributing to your sense of the tone - so try switching the roland touch curve to the first 'heavy' setting. -stu
