This is one of the better and more useful demonstrations I've seen of the Roland SPD-SX. This demonstrates exactly why I want one.

The way he’s using it effectively makes the pad a midi controller. Something that’s been around for decades. I achieve the same results with my old Alesis Control Pad I’ve had for 10+ years and FL Studio.
@johndoe94504 жыл бұрын
@@jon00769 Excatly - You are only using a very expensive an powerful instrument as a MIDI controller for Ableton Live. This can be achieved with .... a MIDI controller. If this is all you want an SPD-SX for then save the money and buy a MIDI controller. @Randy Peal It sounds like you dont have a solid enough understanding on this subject to know what you need.
@sandercools36054 жыл бұрын
@GM 99 You can, you'll just have to get used to the placement of the pads. For instance, you can connect a kick pedal to the SPD-SX on the back and then you would have 10 triggers in total. You can the put the kick sound on the kick pedal, put the snare on pad 7 (on the bottom left), hi hat closed on 8, hi hat open on 9, toms on 4 5 and 6, crash on 1, second crash on 2 and ride on 3. (just one of the many options). I do believe that you also have the option to connect an electronic hihat to the SPD-SX in a way so that you can play open and closed on that external hi hat, but I've never tried that myself. A big bonus is that you can put a different style of drumset in every different kit of the SPD-SX. But then again, why not just buy an electronic drum set? Unless you also want to use some of the SPD-SX's pads to trigger backing tracks and other sounds than drum sounds I don't see the benefit of using the SPD-SX purely as a drum replacement. Hope this answered your question in a way :)

Nice got one today. From Los Angeles living in Amsterdam. Netherlands. After watching all your videos and lots of reading. I think it's great and easy to use. Ive uploaded some sounds I download from a few sites today using the Roland software provided. I started with 8 wave files single zone 8 pads one open. A few files I had to change delete shorten it, remove caps. Then it uploaded fine onto the kit I7 . Renamed kit then saved remove USB cable and done. I went in and change the setting on kit 17 to single shot take poly off loop etc. So it would do what I wanted. I have my Roland TD module plugged into my SPD-SX with single Roland 1/4 male to male mono cable. I now use my headphones on the SPD as it has a headphone volume. Next I will be taking samples from audio from my turntable. Ive orders the proper cables. I don't know if anyone has tried this yet. Moby and Frankie goes to Hollywood are on the list.

Great video, gentlemen. Best demonstration of live use potential I've seen yet! My old spd-s spits white noise out along with the actual sound playing so I've resorted to using it as a midi controller to trigger loops on a laptop. I use an outboard audio interface to send signal to the house. Works great while I save for a new SPD-SX!

Hi, Thanks a lot for this video, it is amazing. I bought an spd sx kind of because of this one. I'am also trying abelton live right now. After getting rid of the usb version issue I followed the instructions of the video, but i struggle with a latency when i hit the pad and when the sample is read. Is there any configuration to use to have a fluid read and re read like in the video (timming 5:43)? thanks in advance.

Can you assign mute groups between kits? I know mute groups work within the SAME patch. I have more than nine loops to run and currently need to hit all sounds off after switching to a new patch. (I also don't have the luxury of a consistent set list to link loops in any order and we don't stop between songs.) Seems like an easy fix. No one wants to assign a whole pad or switch just for All Sound Off. What do you think, Michael?

Hi Michael how are you? i am using the SPD SX for some time and it is a great tool on stage and in studio. i usually used the built-in click track up to now, but now i want to import my own click track and sync it with the internal click of the Roland SPD-SX. but: it is out of sync, it is slowlier and you can also hear it through the deeper tone of the tamborine... Turning off tempo sync via pad settings did not succeed. any ideas? appreciate your help greetings from Germany , Björn

Dumb (?) question but when the spdsx is hooked up to laptop as a controller to the laptop, is the audio coming from the laptop? I ask because the spdsx effects knobs still seemed to be working during the playback. Was that just midi data going back to the laptop or is the spdsx outputting the audio?
@Teach2Build6 жыл бұрын
The laptop sends the audio back to the spdsx where the effects can be applied. You use the audio outs of the spdsx to send to the p.a.
@michaelschack6 жыл бұрын
The SPD-SX can function as a sound interface for any USB compatible device, including a laptop. The laptop will recognise the USB connected SPD-SX as "SPD-SX" and you will be able to select it for both audio input and output. You will need to install the SPD-SX driver though, which you can find on any Roland website. Enjoy!

@ceceandrick6 жыл бұрын
Ive seen your question earlier today somewhere else . There auto numbered as you add them upload them to your SPD wave list. 210 preloaded sounds. I added 8 today and now how 218. I happy that there at the tail end so I can keep track of my own waves on put on there. If they were in there another way I would have a hard time keeping track of my own personal waves. Good luck.

You can by just having both drivers installed. It's like connecting two keyboards and selecting which one come into which MIDI input. For audio, you can normally chose one of both.

It's so funny that you can hear right away that the drums are electronic. They just lack that real life attack of the sticks hitting the drumhead and some imperfection. I'm not judging what's "better". But an electronic kit will never be able to make up for a real kit. You have all the exepensive top gear from Roland and it still can't make up for the real thing.
