19:00 You can also use the Value Knob to switch between the drum sounds, so you don't have to switch to the Note Page and then back to the Seq Page. It's only a minor workflow difference though, if you want to go from Kick (typically on 9) to Clap (typically on 2) you have to scroll a bit. It's just slightly more pleasant to me. Often the 101 has a couple ways of doing things, which I like.

I just pulled the trigger on a Vermona DRM 1 mk3. So that puts the mc101 under my radar. Really cool to see those sample phrase editing functions that are reminiscent of the archaic samplers that had no more than LED number displays on the 606. FINALLY! Something I’ve been hoping for my whole life! Ability to upload samples of my live drum kit into that TR style sequencer grid and then get that pitch, envelope and simple edits that really are the essence of so much modern music, this is a dream come true. Fruity loops delivered that long ago, and first iterations of the monome grid were early hints, but only bound to the mundane monotony of computer software, and knobs one at a time through the mouse. Great comparison! I bought an MC-101 about a year ago, and recently picked up a TR-6S... I really want an 8S, but baby steps, hehe. I know, some people might ask why both, but in a way, I see the two machines excel in different areas. The TR is a rhythm box with the advantage of its ACB and sampling, which I see as an opportunity to lay down an ambient base while the MC with the Zen Core engine gives you a lot more latitude for adding a lot more to a track, especially with all the Zen packs Roland provides via Roland Cloud. I'm just an aging hobbyist at this point, but I do miss my earlier days as a DJ when I experimented quite a bit - If we only had this kind of technology back then... Anyway,. if there's anything critical I'd say about either the 6S or 101 it's that with the condensed form factor, it does take some time to get used to the multi-functional buttons in the interfaces - but you can't deny that being able to take these anywhere to create is a big plus. In the end, I'm a Roland fanboy, so I would recommend either to anyone - or both, if you are keen on the differences - that I see anyway. Looking forward to getting that 8S one day soon! And I like the idea of getting an MC-707, but as a hobbyist, that original price was steep. Glad to see it has come down a bit, but I wonder what the price would be were it not for current economic conditions?

I have another criticism about these. Not having audio inputs was a huge oversight. I get that they saved that functionality for the big brothers, but it's failed commercial logic in my head. By having just a 3.5mm jack with no phantom power, and allowing users access to the sample engine inside the device, it adds a massive layer of independence for these products. If you want something that really makes the big brothers shine and gives people a reason to upgrade, add more audio inputs. Any of these platforms could easily double as a hardware mixer, if they had only added a little bit of i/o. Heck, even if they just had a mix in/out like the aria compacts, that would put these at a much higher level of independence from computers and compatibility with other hardware.

This is an instant buy for me. I've been debating getting an RD-8 or a TR8-S. The RD-8 is just 808, but I can't really justify the cost of a TR8-S, sure it's better for performing with more hands on control, but for the music I perform, the drums are more set and forget. This seems like the perfect middle ground.
@AllenSmithe4 жыл бұрын
Justify it. It's very worth it. Black friday/cyber monday isn't far away and you'll probably be able to get it discounted. If you're interested in classic roland drums enough to drop 300 on an RD8 the jump to TR8S is a no brainer. I have one and I recommend it to a friend who had an RD8, he was skeptical but after he swapped them out he said there was no contest. One of the best drum machines on the market right now. I got mine last black friday for like 500 i think, so if the 750 tag is too steep keep an eye on the sales.

@AllenSmithe4 жыл бұрын
@@hardcoreherbivore4730 The other trade off with pure analog is that if only generates a certain scope of aounds. So if you were willing to pay for an RD8 it would only have an 808 kit. Thats fun for nostalgia sake but that to me is a lot of rig real estate to give up for one kit. In the before times I went into shops and hand tested them all. 8S workflow was the most organic, i prefer sliders over knobs, and i honestly didnt hear enough of a difference to convince me the others were worth it. Now it as FM synthesis as well. Mind you I was holding out for the RD9 but honestly i wouldnt rush to get it now. This thing is a beast for classic drum, if i get another machine it would need to provide a different range of sounds and characteristics.
@hardcoreherbivore47304 жыл бұрын
@@AllenSmithe Fascinating, TBH nostalgia/price is the main reason I find these Behringer clones appealing. After buying the TD-3, I was sold. I will likely be getting all of their drum machine clones, and I really don't need them. Already got a DSI Tempest, and I'm waist deep into building a euro rack drum machine based around Erica Synths techno system. That Vermona DRM Sounds great, decent price too. Ultimately, if the 8S workflow feels right, use it.

I was about to get an 8s but am now torn between that and the 6s. The big thing that puts me off the 6s is only having 6 tracks. Does it feel really limited after having 11 tracks on the 8s? I like the idea of taking the core sounds of say a 909 and building on them with some crazy fm sounds, but with the 6s it seems like you'd have the core sounds and then not have any room to add to it. If it had 8 tracks it'd be an absolute no brainer for me, but 6 sounds just a bit too limiting.

Geared for these small battery powers Airas (I also have the VT-4, which matches this form factor as well) and maybe the inclusion for a couple Boutiques. It doesn’t have to have the MX-1’s amount of inputs (at least the same 4 USB’s for any combination the 6s/101/vt4 & Boutiques) and..maybe similar to the Volca mix, some 1/8” mono and stereo jack’s for non-Roland gear. Oh, the 6S seems like a good companion to my old TR8, so I can get access to that FM drum kit without having to replace it for an 8S. Would be great if we got a TR8 firmware update that extends the SP-404A stuff to handle this one as well.

Old tr 8 ?
@fisk04 жыл бұрын
@@uvoikimovundutrauerblume3302 obviously not ancient tech, but there was a TR8 before the TR8S which doesn't have quite the same features as the TR8S, in particular it's missing the ability to load custom samples and the FM drum kit (the 606, 707, 727, 808 and 909 ACB simulation is the same though to my knowledge).

I got the volca drum recently and i love drum synthesis because for producers, drums can start to sound generic but i think since drum synthesizers are specialized to help you make realistic drums from scratch and customize goes a long way for making your drumbeats stand out and also inspire new ideas for rhythm

@alfreddawson37652 жыл бұрын
@@Johnnisjohnnis I can definitely recommend the TR-6S, I've used it many times since I got it last year. If the TR-6S doesn't fit your budget, there's always the PO-33! The Arturia DrumBrute Impact is also a great Analog drum machine, but it doesn't have the versatility of the TR-6S.

Very exciting to see the 8S in such a small footprint as the MC-101 in this 6S model. Looked in the documentation and I'm quite disappointed though there is no generic USB driver. Quite be quite disabling considering it has only a master analog out. I hope they will provide that in an upcoming firmware. The 8S would also need this improvement, though it does provide multiple analog outputs.

Your videos are extremely helpful! I was trying to decide between buying a TB-3 & Tr-8 or an MC-707, and this video really helped me decide! Thankyou so much. I like your balance of explaining things from different perspectives, in this case the compact vs control detail, and how you can explain very technical and detailed aspects of the devices in a way that is easy to comprehend and understand. Many thanks.

Trying to decide between a model cycles or samples. This just made it more tricky. Models seem to have better sequencer and less menu diving. Tr6s looks to be sonically more flexible (samples and drum synthesis). As a toy, which would be more fun? I rewatched the model cycles review after seeing this. Haven't a clue which to get now. Help!!! (Maybe I just need a tr8s)

I hope Akai finally puts out the drum synth for the mpc Live/X and Force soon. I'm finding that I really want this 6S, but if Akai actually follows through soon on their promise, I won't need it.

I'm thinking of getting the 6S due to it's size and for it's acb drum synth/fm engine to team up with my mpc Live. I feel that would be a killer combo for my needs. And Akai are really dragging their heels regarding the drum synth update, it better be worth it.

Basically the Tr6s is a must have for anyone in the budget range. It takes the volcas and the Behringers and even the Elektrons and Hulk smashes the shite out of them all.

@davidjoseph21974 жыл бұрын
I see now you did mention 'budget range', for which your comment makes more sense. However, for another £100 you could buy a used Vermona DRM1, which is a much more serious instrument. The TR6s has 'that sound', the 909/808 sound that's on every record. Doubtless it does if very well. I wouldn't compare it to Elektron though, the only thing they make in the budget category is the model: range, which isn't really what you would consider typical Elektron. However, they still have a far superior sequencer and at least the cycles has unique sound, not the same old recycled 909/808. That said, Roland invented that sound so they're entitled to repackage it all they want. I guess it all comes down to what sound you're after. There's nothing wrong with the Roland sound, it's nostalgic and it certainly sounds good on a system. It changed the music industry. If you haven't checked out the DRM1, give it a listen. It is by far thee most versatile drum synth (I call it a synth because it doesn't have a sequencef). You have so much sound design at your fingertips. Very overlooked and is priced competitively. Gaz Williams from Sonic state does a review I think. Peace ✌️
@jimmywheelo4 жыл бұрын
@@davidjoseph2197 erm Peace to you too. But I think just labeling the Tr6s a 808/909 drum machine is not very accurate. It has many more kits plus a new FM engine and can take samples too. The sequencer isn't quite as good as the Elektrons but it has come on leaps and bounds. You can program settings on a per step basis and this one has probability too. As for the Vermona....yeah it's a cool drum machine but it has no sequencer and the sounds are the sounds. Great in there own right but they're not more versatile than the Tr6s that has three different engines built in as well as effects, motion recording and much more. I think you should research them all a bit further. I've had a Digitakt, A4, and both the models so I know all about Elektron. Could it be that you're being a gear snob perhaps?
@davidjoseph21974 жыл бұрын
I was merely defending a brand that you made, what was in my mind an unreasonable comparison to. Elektron make much more serious machines than this, but granted they are 3/4 times the price. I wouldn't want people to think that this unit smashes the shit out of an Elektron machine, because it's not even the same device. The TR6 is analogue modelling, without too much flexibility in the sound design and certainly not in a hands on way. In fairness I've only listened to a couple of demos, but it sounds very 808/909 to me, which makes sense because all the models are callled 707/808 etc etc. I don't doubt it has other styles in its Pallete, the reviewers likely focused on its forte and what most viewers would be interested in. If I am being a snob, I am perhaps an analog snob and unashamedly, because that's essentially what I am referring to when point to the DRM1 and the AR for example. My view is this; there is nothing a piece of software can't do that this can, which leaves the interface that in this case isn't very inspiring. A DRM1 or an AR has very in depth sound design parameters and has the power, richness and weight that you get from true analog machines. If you had a beatstep pro and some very nicely modelled kits you'd have a better interface and sounds of equivalent quality to the TR6 If I'm to buy hardware, it has to offer something a computer can't. I also want a device that when someone hears my track, they don't say 'oh nice 808'". They say 'nice drums, how have you made them' This is my personal preference, but I can see how somebody who is fond of the Roland sound would get a lot from this. Not discrediting it, or Roland in anyway, they are about as important to the industry as you can get. Now I'm going to go and play with some eurorack and mediatate on how rich my PWM sounds 🤣

I love these Aria drum machines/grooveboxs, but one complaint I have, is the use of grey color to print the SHIFT functions on the front panel. This makes them unreadable to me, even it good lighting. Also noticed that on the MC-101, TR-6S/8S, the buttons have a little glow, that helps you see the label, where as the new T-8 and J-6 do not, so you cant read the label on them, when they are not selected.
