Good news! It's winter NAMM time in LA, and Roland is launching a bunch of promising new electronic drum products...
We start off our Roland video series with the new Roland VAD 506 electronic drum kit, that features real acoustic shell sizes (10,12,14,20) to begin with. The new PDA-100, PDA-120 and PDA-140F tom pads are equipped with a brand new 3 sensor trigger system, that delivers an authetic feel without any "hot spotting" in the center of the head.
The VAD506 kit comes with the new TD-27 sound module, that combines sounds/features of the TD-17 and TD-50. It fills the gap between both models and replaces its predecessor the TD-25 as the new Roland "middle class" sound module.
The TD-27 is compatible with Roland´s digital pads, so the new VAD kits are equipped with a CY-18DR digital ride, a PD-140DS digital snare, as well as two brand new non-digital e-cymbal models in 14" & 16" inch size (CY-14C-T and CY-16R-T).
You can find all of the components as well as the complete kit in our online shop:

Interesting, that Roland (after MANY years) finally realize that customers prefer the look and feel from acoustic. They even did thinner cymbals. Best thing is, this is actually a contending kit - in comparison to ATV & Pearl, and not 2000% overpriced product. Good for Roland, this should bring som real competition to the e-drum market. Gotta say, I'm actually (first time) impressed by Roland. :)

Nope. If I'm playing anywhere besides a larger-stage club or theater, I want the most minimalist set possible, 8 inch drums all around and just a half-dozen great sounding kits. The company that invents the collapsible stand and mount setup, where everything folds up into a flat package that can be carried in and out with one hand (without needing to run the wires every time) will own the wedding, dinner club, and Knights of Columbus circuit.

As soon as you think you got the audience is foooled that the drums aren’t electric, the black rubber cymbals say otherwise. The problem with electrics is the bouncy mesh heads , this new design may be better less bouncy.

Jeroen De Cloe Nah, not really. But in all fairness I've never been a fan of the e-drums module-sounds from the modules I've heard. I ALWAYS track, and use drum-software. However, my e-drums needs are 100% related to studio-work, for that reason I couldn't care less about the module-sounds. Latency, playability, reliability, and hardware sizes are all that matters to me, personally.

@@stefanosgeorgiou3489 Have you tried e/Merge? Those pads look interesting, though today everyone boasts that their pads have an authentic feel. Gewa is an interesting concept, the module has great potential, there are many great options (and few buttons more! 😁) that Mimic doesn't have, but on the other hand, Mimic sounds are VST. This is also the biggest drawback of the new Roland kits - they are not compatible with the Mimic, but on the other hand, this VAD series is a much better choice than the TD-50.

Awesome. In 2020, Roland comes up with an idea drum-tec already offered more than 10 years ago. And the module sounds are still the same: an overprocessed kick drum and snare next to toms that still sound like plastic cans.
@robertlucas9867
@robertlucas9867 4 жыл бұрын
I agree Mike. Roland is late in the game with real sizes, overpriced, and sounds terrible still. I love the Pearl Mimic Pro but I wish companies would offer lower priced modules that have sounds like Steven Slate or Superior Drummer in them and have real sized kits that don’t require a 5-7 year loan. Why can’t they have a 4pc jazz kit for example with a basic module with select Superior drummers sound pack for around $1000 and have expansion packs going up from there? The ability to add larger sizes and upgrade to a bigger module with more inputs. That’s what is missing.

@@MarkuzP66 Mark every single Roland, Alesis, Pearl or any module manufacture has "crap machine gun sound." Hell on the 27 I have seen comments the toms sound like machine guns. Because you can't crap on the digital snare. Or horrid sound in general from everything. I hear this every time. I bought a TD-17 to run with SD3. Worked great. Did it respond like just the sounds from the module? No... Did SD3 sound better? Yes it did. Then companies like V-Expressions and Drum-Tec sat down and did some tuning. Honestly the TD-27 is going to be monster module that the pro's will tune better than Roland did. They will add samples and it will sound great. It will respond great. We hear this same thing every time. Sounds terrible... Look at the Alesis pro module... Now deemed as the best sounding module on the market. But when it came out it's sound was hacked on time and time again. A few patches later they hero's. I promise your the audience has no clue what you are even playing, with some tweaking it will be right there... Don't believe me? Heard of the late great Neil Peart? He made the news this week. He was huge Roland fan and arguably the best drummer on earth... The sounds will be fine. Please don't take this as an attack. I get tired of acoustic purists telling many of us use your Pearl Masters sounds better. Not all of us can do that. E-Drums are progressing and the future. Just like that time Dillon went "Electric".

Joshua Ferry Sorry, I don‘t agree! I had nearly every drum module from Roland TD12,TD30,TD50 and a 2Box and now I have a mimic Pro and totally satisfied with the sound. Roland has very good hardware and nice electronic sounds but when it comes to acoustic samples it is terrible! The sample just too bad in resolution and no real multilayering with round robin! The result is machinegunning and harsh sounding Snares and Toms. SD3 (I have it too) is total different approach! You can compare this with the mimicPro. Both are running soundlibraries. Roland is not really innovative! The new VAD pads are ATV Copies and the soundmodules are stuck in the 90th. 2Box does better. Alesis does better and thats what I meant!

For roland to respond like this to ATV's lineup must mean they're making enough of a dent in the edrum world to impact the giant himself. I just purchased a VAD506 this week. I was going originally with the new VAD706 but at the steep price of $8,000 the more I looked at the 506 it just made more sense for me. I got it new in the box for $4200 and I am planning on using superior drummer for the sounds anyway. The only thing I may upgrade once it’s available is the new digital hi-hats which are about $800. I think the 506 is overall a way better value than the 706.

Nice looking kit. But let's not forget the sounds we are hearing are direct from the module. But for gigging with this kit you need a good PA and aways have to EQ to take account of the PA and the venue environment. Once you adjust your kit sound to sound as good as it's gonna get, you have to do it all again when using different kit sounds.
@drumtecTV
@drumtecTV 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, but that's basically the same problem you have with an acoustic kit in different live venues no? An electronic kit actually has the advantage that is has no acoustic sound to it, that might be problemtaic with the individual room acoustics & interfere with the sound coming out of the PA, so it makes life easier actually in some cases :) kind regards!

Still amazes me to this day, Roland has never gotten the sounds right. They made some nice progress with the TD30 and the cymbal swells and the snare had that round robin non machine gunning algorithm to it, but they just stopped there. They didn’t include that to the toms and the toms have machined gunned since day one, they never addressed that, even to this day with the TD50. Pearl Mimic Pro has gotten the closest to a very good sounding module with the built in VST in a box concept. The best sounding drum module has been the 2Box Drumit 5 with the “modded” SD card mod to convert and play Superior drummer kits on the module itself with no need for a middle man laptop. It was and is still fantastic, but IMO there’s no looking back with the Pearl Mimic pro. I hope they only get stronger and get better because sample and sound wise, Roland is still underachieving.
@chopzmasta07
@chopzmasta07 4 жыл бұрын
It frustrates me too. I think it was 2box that used actual wave files in their modules. It was the closest thing to an actual kit. I'm sick of these companies creating these highly expensive kits that still sound like they did in 2008. If it's going to come down to using plug-ins- I'll just buy some triggers and a cheap module.
@revup67
@revup67 3 жыл бұрын
@@chopzmasta07 I believe its true since I haven't gotten the Roland kit yet, once you MIDI this kit or other V drum, EF Note, ATV kit, etc into your DAW, you should be able to load a VST such as Abbey Road 60s Drummer by Native Instruments and get (as an example) the authentic sounds many of us seek vs. being limited as to what's in this module or any other. It appears the module here is your selection of choices for straight out of the box configuration. At least with the TD-50X you can load your own samples thus saving any snare from any VST such as Native Instruments or Komplete 13 or Reason 11 and upload those samples into the Roland module to create your own kit sound.

Thank you Chris, yes that would be a super setup! The TD-27 is interesting as module for using midi out, it has positional sensing, is compatible with the Roland digital pads (Ride!) and has quite some more trigger inputs than a TD-17. So onboard sounds apart, this is the best bang-for-the-buck high end trigger/sound module you can get for using external samples, without having to purchase a TD-50 :) Kind regards!

@@drumtecTV Sadly, being blind, none of these modules are accessible to me for configuration as I can't see the screen. Configuring and optimising them to trigger correctly, and to properly trigger virtual instruments via MIDI is a real challenge. I wish someone made a decent midi trigger module with 20 or so inputs and a decent configuration app for the Mac. Something that allowed an e-kit to trigger virtual instruments and nothing else. There are a few options on the market but they're either designed only for a few pads or the control software is terrible. A product idea for you perhaps!
