I think Thiem will have a chance to upset Nadal if he plays the same way he played against Novak ... despite the wind he's showed off a lot of impressive shots ... this could be Thiem's year if he manages to recover his energy in time ... I'm a fan of both Thiem and Nadal (I think most fans of Nadal are likely to be fans of Thiem since they seem to have similar personalities) ... anyone of them winning will make me happy (and a little sad) at the same time ...

Here re-watching 3 years later. Hoping Thiem can get back to this level. He’s a confidence player and needs some big wins and momentum. The forehand doesn’t have the weight/power that it used to, but he will get it back !

He cannot because he changed his forehand technique to protect his wrist and this new technique results in power loss, I'd love for him to be back but it does not appear to be the case. I hope I am wrong.

Dominic is one of the few players who hasn't won a Grand Slam that doesn't fear any opponent, that along with all the improvements he has made to his game makes him a real threat to Rafa. Dominic is playing better than last year, he has more variety in his shots, he is far more skilled than last year, obviously this new coach he employed has done some good work with him. If he can get the first set against Rafa, then Rafa will have a real test on his hands, Dominic is very mentally tough. I was really impressed with how he beat Djokovic, this was a brilliant performance, well done Dominic.

Thiem is a real beast, especially on clay. He won already few matches vs Nadal on his favorite surface, playing nice offensive tennis and I suppose he has the best record vs Rafa on clay too. Also the crazy US Open 2018 match between those two, the first bagel set was the best tennis I ever seen. If he is fit and ready mentally, the final will be a blockbuster.

I'm probably wrong, but i feel comfortable in saying thiem has a better shot beating nadal on clary than either fed or joker. thiem can hit through the clay like soderling did, and as others have against nadal in the past.

Thiem mentally tough? You did not see the 5th Set, where he was 2 times with one Break up and still choked it. Djokovic lost it at the end, even though I appreciate Thiem's perfomances. Rafe will destroy him in 3 Sets.

@@frankg.39 No, the other way around. Both players hit way more unforced errors than winners in this match, and there were a lot of very easy misses due to the horrid windy conditions. Tsitsipas Wawrinka however, had both players scoring far more winners than UE, and was played in conditions with very little wind interference. There's no doubt this semifinal is worse in quality, it was only suspenseful, but the quality was not great.

But both Novak and Thiem played at a very high level considering how difficult the "hurricane" condition is ... Thiem seems like he has the weapons to make Novak look average, many times he able to put the ball totally out of reach from Novak at very specific small percentage spots ... most players avoid such high risk shots because they fail most of the time but Thiem's success rate with high risk shot is really high ...

Thiems kick serve out Wide and change it up on big pressure points by thumping the T serve was such a key pattern of play Thiem threw the kitchen sink at him from the baseline simply by an healthy balance of extreme margin play by aiming big targets with his heavy rpms and step in to finish him with his incredible forehand. Not to forget his outstanding defense play forcing Djokovic to hit tough volleys Also loved the way how Thiem used so much backhand slice . Well the importance of it was to disrupt Djokovics backhand. Furthermore it was important to Thiem to float it more wide instead of cutting it short more often than not . That secured him to counterpunch and use his wheels to outlast Djokovic. As the match went on he used short slices and drop shots to bring Novak in quite naturally. Another pattern to me which is overlooked is how Thiem trades heavy forehands with Djokovic. Djokovics biggest baseline stroke to me is the spread of his forehand on clay so Thiem did well to counter that wing retrieving and sending it back to Djokovic remarkably well So in the end it was his clutch serving + big resilient baseline which outlasted Djokovic and brought him the victory

I do believe Thiem has been improving at the French year by year. He was actually beating Rafa in the long rallies until set 2 before Rafa changed tactics. FO 2020 will be interesting, the draw will be crucial with fitness for the favorites. Nadal is a monster at the French and rightfully so, but thiem is also a beast. Thiem; in the eyes of real tennis fans, not the fanatics, you are a Great Champion, competitor and we thank you. Several times you were treated unfairly in this tournament (disrespect at the press conference, inexplicable suspension of match against Djoko on Friday and having to play a Grand Slam championship match playing 4 days in a row while your opponent had been resting since Friday) yet you gave no excuses, beat the best player in the world in 5 amazing sets, did your best and were even able to win one set in the final. In my eyes you are the REAL CHAMPION OF THE 2019 ROLAND GARROS. As a fan of the sport, I have great respect and appreciation for that and I thank you and salute you!. Nadal, the myth of your sportsmanship got a big hit today, and it saddens me because I have been a fan of you from the beginnings. For the better of the sport and fans, you had a great opportunity to raise up and ask the tournament officials to postpone the match for Monday so that Thiem could get at least one day of rest but you chose not to. What a shame and disappointment! Is winning "AT ANY COST" is all that matters to you now? If so, how do you think the doping allegations that have followed you are going to look now, knowing that Marita Koch and co., Jarmila Kratochvílová and co., Florence Griffith-Joyner and co., Lance Armstrong and co. and others have never been caught? Roland Garros, you are very incompetent! No roof and no real leadership making the necessary adjustments for the benefit of the sport and real tennis fans. Shame on you!
