I am from Bangladesh, working on improving melon sweetness. In our region, we face the issue of pale flesh color and a lack of sweetness in melons, with sugar content ranging between 5-7 brix. Unfortunately, we only have access to urea and DAP as nitrogen fertilizers, with no availability of NPK or NO3 options. While using these fertilizers results in large melons (4-6 kg), they lack the desired sweetness, flavor, and flesh color. To address this, I have implemented strategies focusing on potassium sources such as MOP and K2SO4, in combination with Bayer Amino Acid PGR. In Bangladesh, achieving the desired sweetness and flavor in melons is a significant challenge. Melons often have pale flesh color and lack the expected sweetness, which greatly impacts their desirability among consumers. Given the limited availability of fertilizers, I have experimented with urea and DAP. Although these fertilizers have resulted in larger melons, they have not improved sweetness, flavor, and flesh color. To overcome this challenge, I am exploring alternative fertilization approaches. I have turned to MOP (muriate of potash) as the primary potassium source. I apply it during field preparation and also through drain dressing with irrigation. By ensuring an adequate supply of potassium, I aim to support overall fruit development. To further optimize potassium uptake and enhance melon quality, I regularly spray K2SO4 in combination with Bayer Amino Acid PGR from flowering to harvest. This strategy provides additional potassium support during critical growth stages, with the hope of influencing sweetness, flavor, and flesh color. Recent research from YARA has emphasized the importance of a balanced NO3:NH4 ratio. Higher levels of ammonium (NH4) can inhibit potassium (K+) uptake as it competes with double-bonded Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions, as well as tetra-ion bonded NH4+ itself. To address this, I have decided to avoid ammonium-based nitrogen fertilizers like urea and DAP. By doing so, I hope to create an environment that facilitates more effective potassium absorption, potentially leading to improved sugar accumulation in the melons. To fine-tune the growing conditions, I am avoiding gypsum, sulfur, and magnesium. I have observed that saline soil may contribute to increased sweetness (up to 15 brix) due to elevated electrical conductivity (EC) and pH levels. Using gypsum might reduce sodium levels, which can impact sweetness. By intentionally avoiding sulfur, I aim to maintain a higher pH, which may have a positive influence on melon quality. Additionally, I use dolomite during the initial ploughing to raise the pH from an average of 5.5 to a targeted 6.5 while providing calcium and magnesium. I shall spray some Calcium chloride during 4 and 6 leaves stage and during net formation of the fruit for avoiding calcium deficiency. I am also using a high value NPK + micronutrients spray fertilizer to avoid mg and other important nutrient deficiency. For nitrogen source, I have a plan to use vermi tea, fermented fish fertilizer and fermented mustard cake fertilizer as regular basis soil application. My question is, Will avoiding the use of urea and DAP (ammonium-based nitrogen fertilizers) and focusing on a balanced NO3:NH4 ratio help increase the sugar content, sweetness, flavor, and flesh color of melons? By avoiding gypsum, sulfur, and magnesium, and using dolomite to raise the pH, will it have a positive impact on the melon quality? Could you provide further explanation on how avoiding the ammonium form of nitrogen fertilizer may help increase the sugar content in melons? If I can discuss more with you about this, I shall be very glad. My email is ceo@bizpata.com

Under saline conditions plants accumulate more sugars to adjust osmotic potential. Therefore fruits become more sweeter than normal conditions.

sir,i have one qn hope you dont feel wrong about it. Whatever u teach is it based on textbooks of a syllabus or have you personally tested the process of nutrient absorbtion/uptake their internal chemical reaction within a plant etc. Or have you seen the physical transfer of these nutrients etc in plants when some plant scientist was conducting an experiment LIVE.
