Oxygen released during photosynthesis comes from water, and is an important source of atmospheric 1930s, Van Niel hypothesized that pants split water as a source of hydrogen, releasing oxygen as a by-product. Niel’s hypothesis was based on his investigations on photosynthesis in bacteria that make oxygen which most organisms need for aerobic respiration and thus for obtaining energy to live.carbohydrate from carbon dioxide, but do not release oxygen.
