The rarity of Grimms is what makes them so special. They are incredibly strong and are the bane of Weson's existence since they can see them in their true form when everybody else can't. Too many Grimms wouldn't be fun to watch.

Remember when nick and rebul first met, if it wasn't for Monroe nick would have never figured out that she is a Grimm. Apparently Grimm's cant tell who's Grimm and whos not.

Nick has gained some infamy among the secret wesen/grimm world, and he’s rather easy to find due to his publicity compared to someone like Nick’s mom or Trubel.

They aren't going extinct exactly, it's just that, after so many centuries, many of the lines have died out. Grimms are harder to kill than normal humans, but considering the fact that they were a lot less than the Wesen population in the first place, after so many centuries of hunting and fighting Wesen, their numbers have dwindled. And as someone mentioned in another answer here, Grimms don't exactly advertise who they are. Nick is an exception, he's much more involved in the Wesen community and has a somewhat neutral relationship with the Council. At this point in the storyline, Wesen, Royals and the Council know about him.

@@Alinor24 No, it's explained at the beginning. It doesn't have to do with genes. All Grimm descendants have the ability to become Grimms, meaning have super-hearing, super-strength, the ability to see Wesen even if they don't visibly Woge. But they only become Grimms after one of their Grimm relatives dies. LIke, Nick became a Grimm after his aunt Marie died and took her place in the family line. He would have become a Grimm a lot faster if his mother had died when they said she did. Trubel was a Grimm from a very young age, considering she was in the foster system her parents probably died young. Josh becomes a Grimm later on, after his father dies and that's why Trubel goes with him, to teach him about this world, just like Nick taught her.

This episode was both amazing and disappointing. Amazing for introducing other Grimms and annoying for suddenly dropping so many keys into Nick's lap. They made them up to be so rare and so highly sought after but suddenly they just pop up everywhere. It kinda devalued that storyline quite a bit.

Indeed. There is one problem i have with SPN apart from it being too long is that both Sam and Dean always whine about their destiny. What i love about Nick is that he loves being a grimm.
