Rolex Explorer 214270 (Hands-On Review): First Week On The Wrist

A Review and Discussion around the Rolex Explorer 214270. After wearing the watch for a week my opinions have already changed (and changed even still after the recording). The size and scale of the watch is excellent. Barring all that has been said about the increase in size, everything feels proportionate and relevant when we consider modern Rolex's Design Language. It is not a perfect watch though and over the next few weeks we'll delve into why.

Excellent and honest review. I’ve owned 6 Rolex’, including the 36 Exp. I’ve happily moved on to IWC and a Tudor Ranger Heritage as my tool watch. I just love the raised crystal, the vintage look and the homage to the original Explorer. The brushed case is just another bonus in addition to the perfect fit. I could never get any Rolex to fit just right, tbh.

Thanks for the video ID Guy, you’ve given me plenty to think about as I am intending to get an explorer. Looks like you are going to compare it to your Seamaster 300m? Have you thought about comparing it to the Railmaster also? That’s the other watch I’m considering.

It 100% works as a "one watch" if you can live without the date function (you will miss it, but you will live). If you had only one watch for the rest of your life, it would have to be one that looks good in almost every situation. The exception would be if you had a profession or hobby that calls for something more complicated. You also don't want your "one watch" to garner a lot of attention. There will be times that that is not a good thing. Agree with most points in the video, though if this piece "should" be priced at $3k max, a sub "should" cost $3.5k max.

I absolutely agree with everything you wrote. I don't understand why so many delude themselves into thinking Rolex or Omega or Breitling, etc. are just upmarket tool watches when they've been luxury items for decades now...$3K for this reference is a ridiculous statement!

Fantastic review as always IDGuy. I appreciate your honesty and totally understand your feelings on the Explorer. This watch is not for everyone. In general, as a professional model Rolex, and for me in particular, the 214270 Explorer is almost the perfect watch. Is it the flashiest or most exciting watch? No, but it does do so many things well and flies under the radar while doing it. This could easily be a one and done watch.

Outstanding video. Thank you for sharing your honest opinion. This is the one watch in my one watch collection and I don’t have any plans to expand. It climbs mountains, runs trails and goes mountain biking with me. I wear it to the office, and on special occasions... it does it all. Every day, I look at it and it makes me smile. Every week it picks up a new scratch or ding and I don’t mind a bit. One of the things I enjoy most is swapping straps. It’s most often on a NATO because I’m on the move outside more days that not. From time to time it’s on leather, but every couple weeks I’ll put it back on the the oyster bracelet and wow... amazing. Living in a world where we all see things differently makes life interesting and fun. While it doesn’t entirely suit you, I wouldn’t change a thing. Thanks again, I’ll look forward to your next video about the 214270.

Very flattering, Julien. Thank you! The more I think about my ideal Explorer, the more I look to the 1016 (cliche as it might be). This Smiths Everest has taught me so much about it being a "silent companion" instead of it needing to be overstated for the sake of wrist presence. But it's different for everyone. Some are blessed with larger wrists that the 214270 would look amazing on. This hobby....

I really don’t get the price at 2.5k to 3k. I’ve owned in the past a Tag that was that kinda money I’ve owned Omegas and Tudors etc. All great watches but there is no doubt that the tolerances and designs you speak of regarding this Explorer make it feel worth more than the price you are suggesting when compared with the competition. When Breitling are asking 2.5k for plastics cased quartz watches and there are many eta movement watches at that money I feel you’re off the mark. All Rolex are more than they shd be . Compared to the market and what say a Railmaster costs. 2.5k is way off IMO. Unless you’re saying all luxury watches are too much? Omega have had so many price rises in the last 2 years it seems to be getting out of hand. They are all going a bit vertical atm. Value is of course subjective. But I can’t see 2.5 to 3k when compared with other marks. IWC entry level simple pilots watches aren’t in house movements for example and they are 4 grand. Its just way off IMO. I enjoyed the review and there were some solid points made. For me it’s kinda my “straight man” watch in my little collection. It still feels special but I wear it when I don’t want to be noticed at all. I often wear it on a rubber b or a leather strap and would happily wear it around London with no fear of getting mugged. I’ve worn it on bike rides, I wear it to the gym. It does feel more “go anywhere” than say a sub or a moonwatch etc would do. I wouldn’t wear most of my other watches in this way.

I think that he's right. The Explorer is overpriced. All S/Steel Rolex is overpriced! Why would you fail to acknowledge that? How can you justify not acknowledging that? Your paying a 30% premium for Brand hype and marketing! Who do you think pays for the miles of Rolex wall at every F1 GP? Tennis and golf Grand Slam? Sailing? Equestrian? And who pays for the ambassadors, the advertising? It's certainly ɴᴏᴛ Rolex! I get that's what they do. And the are very good at it indeed. But don't pretend that you don't pay for it via inflated prices! One could take you for niave.
@davidb9531
@davidb9531 3 жыл бұрын
If you took away the crown and provenance is it worth 5k I think was the point, which is a wholly fair comment, railmasters were going for 2.8k from goldsmiths on bracelet recently. If one looks at the build quality of a grand seiko, sbgw231 for 4k, 3k used is the explorer worth more, totally different watches I get that. But don't see anything silly about challenging likely 70 percent mark up on cost to actually make
@anthonysmith2982
@anthonysmith2982 3 жыл бұрын
David B - I'm not sure that I understand what you are saying in your final sentence, so I'll address what I (hope) I do understand...if that makes sense. Unfortunately I have never handled a Grand Seiko so I can't comment on the brand aside from many trusted sources citing them as the pinnacle in finishing. IMO, the Rolex Explorer is not the only over priced s/steel sports in todays market. The Speedy Pro Moon watch Hesalite comes to mind. However I think Rolex are certainly the brand that comes to mind when one thinks of an entire range being overpriced, especially when one considers very clever market manipulation to inflate prices. As far as other pieces that are - subjectively - of lesser quality increasing their own prices, one could argue that they are simply taking advantage of all the $ and hardwork Rolex expends to keep it's prices high. Far be it from me to tell somebody how to spend their money! And even worse, to criticise how it is spent. But avoiding the ʀᴇᴀʟɪᴛʏ of where the $ spent actually goes in cost allocation is, in my mind, worth a call out. I don't want to pay for signs, ads and famous faces to the extent that Rolex asks me to, so I don't. That does not make people who choose to buy a Rolex anything other than different to me, and if the so called Rolex bubble doesn't pop, perhaps a little wealthier too! I look at the Tudor of today and I see bargain. I see more than one or two pieces that are an astute buy and in many cases I see pieces that are cheaper to own. Less finesse than Rolex, undoubtedly, but for me and my taste and my budget, a higher % of my $ is going into the watch from a company that is fighting to re-build a brand, so from that perspective I simply see Rolex as being over priced. I hope that addresses some of your comments David, and clarifies a few of mine. Cheers.

I’ve had mine for 3 weeks now and was waiting for your review here. I completely agree on the lug width / case diameter point. The watch has lost the ‘stance’ of the 36mm as the case no longer runs smoothly into the bracelet. I also feel the 39mm diameter means the bezel is too wide to avoid reflecting light, thereby giving the dial an oversized and unnecessary frame. It’s a keeper, though I still have an appointment at my AD this weekend to see the Black Bay 36, again. Maybe the Explorer is for once a stepping stone to the homage to itself! Great vid as always. Looking forward to the next one 😉👍

I do appreciate modern build quality though so dream of Rolex one day releasing a smaller Explorer. A rare and dare I say, momentous review. You have completely hit the nail on the head when you state that buyers are paying more for the brand than the watch itself, and thereby buying watches that are simply overpriced for what you get. This applies across the board with Rolex watches, of course, and I say this as a proud owner of several Rolex watches, Just six years ago, I bought a perfect example of a pre-ceramic sub for £3.5 and a brand new blue Yacht-Master at a discount from an AD for £6k. I frankly just look on with shock and horror at what's happened with Rolex prices since then. If there's ever been a better example of The Emperor's New Clothes, I'm yet to see it! I genuinely hope that at some point, there will be a collective appreciation and understanding that Rolex watches are not worth the money they are going for... as you say in this excellent review. Great watches, yes, but, for the money? (especially over rrp) a resounding no.

"Next video we will be comparing it to a classic" The Explorer is about as classic as Rolex gets. It is instantly recognisable as an Explorer, a watch that has been in the Rolex line up longer than any other sports watch in their range. It is understated class, it doesn't draw attention to itself, if you want that in a watch then maybe the Explorer isn't for you, complaining about the very things that are part of the heritage shows that you don't 'get' the watch. Worrying about other people's comments just shows you are insecure in your choices and need validation. Anyone who is into watches will know exactly what it is, I get that you don't like Rolex. Nothing wrong with that of course, everyone likes different stuff. My Explorer gets more wrist time than any other watch I have, I am quite happy that it goes under the radar.

John Smith there’s nothing wrong with the 39mm if that can fit your wrist size. This idea that an Explorer can only be 36mm is quite ludicrous. I also believe that people that don’t own this watch/never tried it on in person and just watch KZbin videos to gauge people’s opinions won’t be able to understand what the 39mm Explorer owners already know: this watch is elegant and very well sized! The bracelet is well proportioned and comfortable with its easy link 5mm extra room.

I think your should look at the YM40 as a first/only Rolex. It is brushed and polished and the Rhodium dial is just stunning especially in sunlight. The case is smaller and sleeker than the sub (more like a Daytona or Datejust case) and the slim lugs make it feel like a 5 Digit piece. I know it has a date so not symmetrical but it is one of those pieces that has to be on the wrist to be fully appreciated.

Explorers don’t fall foul to the same hype as the Subs and Daytonas. I waited 3 weeks for my Explorer. I’d get on the list ASAP though as there is conjecture it will be phased out (or made bigger) - it’s the last of the 39mm in the catalogue. Dunno why Rolex are bumping up their sizes. Unnecessary.

I purchased my Rolex Explorer 214270 from the Rolex Boutique less than two weeks ago. Having owned the Explorer II 216570 and the GMT-Master II 116710LN, I was never really a fan of the Explorer. Of course that was until I had it sized to my wrist and properly given the chance to enjoy the watch. Very low-key and under the radar, and it fits my 16,5cm wrist perfectly. Unfortunately it had to go back for a warranty checkup as it was losing 12 seconds per day. Overall a great watch, but I still prefer "my" black dial 216570 which I regret selling to this day.

I've heard about some models, fresh from the stores that lose up to 25 seconds a day...How is that even allowed?? I'm sorry that you've had to deal with this issue, man. I also hope that in the end you manage to find a 216570 again. It's so important going with your gut at the end of the day, that's where the true love lies ;)

I was in the same mindset as you were when I first handled a Rolex in person, IDGuy. “Why is this thing so plain and simplistic, and yet so hyped and expensive?”. If you’re a WIS, then Rolex won’t immediately blow you away, but I believe it will be a slow release process, where you will naturally and eventually come to appreciate the watch. A midsize Datejust will be my first Rolex, which I hope won’t be subjected to these steel sports supply shortage shenanigans.

The more I think about it, the one Explorer that I always return back to is the 1016. Thanks for sharing your perspective. I find myself feeling much the same way about the explorer. I have been lusting after one for years and just this month was ready to pul the trigger. But when I tried one on, the magic wasn't there. Far from it in fact. The 36 looked like an "old-man's" watch on my arm (I am not young). It's gorgeous but not a lot of visual interest unless you look up close. The 39 is a better size but I agree with your assessment. The design didn't scale up well and the inconsistencies are that much more apparent in the larger size. I ended up buying an explorer ii 16570 for daily wear. It's a good size, good proportions and has more visual interest without being too flashy. I am very happy with it.

Funny how we rationalise these things, right? Excellent choice with the 16570. The more I think about it, even with its ridiculous pricetag, the one watch that I really want and the one that would ultimately satisfy this Explorer craving of mine, would have to be the 1016. The Smiths Everest has taught me how versatile of a design it is (and whenever I'm wearing the watch, the thought never disappears) Maybe in the next 10 years my luck will change ;) Thank you for your comment Gary!

Its definately a slow burn to appreciate. Having owned and sold the Explorer (214270 MK1) twice, it is understated/plain depending on which way you look at it. Whenever i used to put it on i never went "wow",....more of a "yep that feels so right". After a while i just always skipped over it, in favor of something more visually interesting be it complications or asthetics. You are right in saying that its a watch that you wear when you dont want to think about your watch, because there are no real standout features, its an amalgamation of all the parts. Built for purpose, and uncomprimisingly understated.

Exactly. that "yep, feels right" hits me every time. Even if it takes 10+ years and insane luck, my heart is set on a 1016 (cliche as it might be) - a comment a moment ago mentioned "Silent Partner" and if anything, the lil Smiths Everest taught me how incredible such a simple, unobtrusive watch can be. Thanks for your insight and comment, man. Really appreciated.

Spot on! Great watch. A one a done for some people - but needs an updated movement. Hoping they don’t update it to a 41mm! Unfortunately, I graduated from this model awhile back. But good for a 20-30 year old person . All Rolexes are boring and mass produced - unlike Patek, VC or AP. But everyone man needs one !! Nice video mate.

Beautifully stated review. Best one on the Explorer 39mm MkII on KZbin. On its own it looks like a 40/41mm next to a Sub or Speedy it looks small. I really like the dial proportions. They hit it out of the park, with that said. The bezel and the oval optical illusion is what makes this look a bit off. It’s as it was a swollen 39mm watch. It looks and wears larger than its dimensions. Perhaps that is why some people notice the size of the bracelet/case is a little off. To me it has the same heft to a Date Just II. It doesn’t look as refined as the 39mm OP. If it had a dome bezel or a thinner flat bezel, maybe it would wear to its true size. This definitely works with a wrist 7” plus. Anything less than 7” it looks large especially if you are a short thin build gentlemen. I can wear a Panerai and get away with it. I can wear a 36mm Date Just and feel like it’s me. Even a Submariner super case ceramic wears small compared to this. For now I would prefer a 36mm for the price that they are going for now. I think $6900 retail of $7k plus used market is too much for a time only bad is oyster case watch. For a grand more you are in Submariner territory.

Great insight on this watch. I just purchased this one not long ago and the 39 works well on my flat wrist. It’s perfect for me for its simplicity, just need the time. Less is more, but adding 369, mercedes hands and the triangle at 12 just does it for me. Over an OP. I agree crown needs to be a bit larger.

You said it..... You learned something new when it was actually on your wrist for more than a few minutes, even a few hours. I have come to that same realization over the past few months. There is no substitute for actually wearing the watch in daily wear. One thing I hope you cover in your next video is the actual dial size differences between your Omega 1957 and the Rolex Explorer both actual and perceived. I have measured all my watches as well as some others and discovered something very interesting. Sometimes watches of the same size have dials that are very different in size due to bezels etc. So you have the actual measured size and then the perceived size on the wrist. I would really appreciate your comparison of these two watches. Oh, by the way. I have a wonderful $80 42 mm Seiko black dial SS, quartz sports watch that fills this spot in my watch collection perfectly. As you might remember, I am on the hunt for my first premium watch suitable for daily wear. I have had many considerations and nothing has got me to spend the cash yet.

Chipping in on people's comments. Watches have diminishing returns, expensive versus a Smiths but cheap compared to a Royal Oak. I think the better question is what would rather have at this price point (assuming you could not pocket the difference). This watch grows on you, to the point where I'm not sure I even need another. A worthy companion that isn't out of place whatever you're doing or wherever you're going.

Ditto Tony Hill, very well said! I wholly concur with your thoughts, only but a few notice, or have awarness of what's on my wrist. Only but a few fix gaze to register that as soon as the meetings ended an interesting chat will result. The explorer is part of my daily rotation of Subs, Pepsi, Batman, Wimbledon and OP. All of them have a place and a time, reflecting mood and a thought for the day ahead.The explorer is as described, it flies well under the radar and so different to the rest of my pieces which are much louder. I don't feel it's a piece that should receive as much attention all the time, instead, for me at least, it creates balance to complements atire, not something I need to look at all the time - essentially fit for purpose. And yes, i agree, it might be best to start OP route, its still my favourite for the memories of events I can recall - wearing it 10 years certainly proved it's durability and interest which honed interest and later pieces. I don't think the Explorer being priced 2k, 3k, 4k... is relevant, we all know the actual cost is a fraction of retail. What's a watch worth? The retainment of value is genuine factor for consideration, if you're in the market for a car worth at least the same years on after putting miles and miles on the clock, you've got a keeper, you would if you have the funds buy it. Also it helps if you like it - it's all very subjective

For me, the Explorer will forever remain a watch which I like the idea of, but could have been met by several pieces, all much cheaper. I thought it was "the one" simply because it was the first piece to ever make me feel all fuzzy inside. It still does at least.

I'm wearing my 36mm 114270 as I write this. To me, the 36mm is perfect for the Explorer. Lightweight, understated and not too small for my 7" wrist. I can't comment on the 39mm version because I've never seen one in person. Just on the net. Compared to other 39mm watches that I've owned, I can only assume that it is too much watch for its purpose, a no complication field watch. I also don't know why so many people get bent out of shape about small watches. Years ago, men wore 30, 32, 34mm watches and 36mm was considered a large watch. Some say that men were smaller years ago. Maybe some were but I can remember a lot of big guys wearing small watches. ID Guy..... I wish you could strap on a 36mm Explorer (not a homage) after you return the 39mm. It would make for an interesting comparison.

The 224270 nailed the proportions a little more so then this one. Everything ID guy didn’t like about the MK2 other than the box crystal thing, is fixed on the next generation. The ink black dial, the size and scale, the beefy crown, the wow factor on the dial with the larger hands. They even increased the bracelet by a single mm exactly like ID guy suggested. ID guy, you need to review and add the explorer 40 to your collection. Out of all the Rolex I’ve owned, it’s my favourite.

I agree with your observation about negative space and dial proportions being off a bit on the 39mm Explorers. 37.5mm might have been the better compromise. The 36 is just too small by today’s standard but the 39 was too big of a jump in size. The Explorer styling is classic. It will never go out of style. While it may seem somewhat plain, even dull you will never grow tired of the looks. It’s a watch to grow old with and a bargain as far as Rolex Sport watches

Just sold mine. I liked it a lot, but the 39 always seemed just a bit too petite for me (might be perfect for someone else / smaller wrist), and a bit too understated for me. I have an AIr King as my daily now, which is perfect for me size wise - it has a lot more more presence (and it’s quirky, which I like). Just my opinion, but I think these two watches (Seamaster 57 and Explorer) are too similar for the same collection, both being no date daily wears (unless it’s a large collection) - get a GMT, dress watch, a complication or a chronograph for some variety / horological interest. I’m very happy right now with Air King, BB GMT and Zenith El Primero.

The question burning my brain is: How many times a week do you have to adjust the time on it? How many secs a day is it gaining? Reading earlier comments I've come to understand it's interesting setting the time. It possibly could be a one and done watch if it was one of the first watches you owned. However, the horological adventure takes many of us to so many varying tastes, our pellet may find the Explorer flavor a bit bland upon achieving it. I'm glad this watch has and will live a life upon a wrist. Too many don't. Great video as always IDGuy.

Between you and me, crown action, winding and setting feels kinda meh next to the 8806 in the Seamaster. I've been spoilt. I'll be sure to cover some ASMR with winding in the versus video (you can't even hear or feel the Omega wind in comparison - that's beyond buttery smooth hahaha) But without question, the 3132 needs to be updated. So far the accuracy has been very decent, gaining a few more seconds a day (about +5) next to the Seamaster (+2). It does make for a great "only" watch IF you're not a watch person ;) Ah, this hobby, man... this hobby...

This is a plain watch that you will feel it's plain to put it down but quite often , you will want to wear it so much because of it's sleek design I think this is called classic It's a watch that worth to stay forever in anyone's collection because you will always want to wear it from time to time

So bearing this review in mind, how do you feel about the 39 OP and Omega Aqua Terra in relation to the Explorer? I know you love the 'Bumblebee' Aqua Terra. Do you think it's a better buy? (I know this is personal, but I would like to hear your thoughts none the less)

I think what makes the Explorer such a great piece next to the more basic styled models (like the AT and the OP's) is that the dial still possesses a greater "visual complexity" that makes it much more enjoyable to look at, and it would ultimately keep you more entertained for longer. Some love the idea of wearing watches like the Omega Globemaster. BUT it's all down to our maturity and tastes at the end of the day ;) There are actually way too many factors to even consider. Batons and numerals, Wynand. It's an endless rabbit hole hahaha!

@@ID-Guy For sure. Recently I've grown to like the plain versions of non-plain brands (sorry for the simple terms, but I don't really know how to put it more eloquently). The Rhodium dial OP and the same Aqua Terra you did a review on, speak to me. Even though a 'plain watch' appeals to my persona, I love a little pop of something. The Cyan accents in the Rhodium OP and the bee-like colouration on the Aqua Terra draws me to them even though they might be considered 'plain'. No one would bat an eyelid should I wear any of those while having a Wimpy breakfast, but those who knows, know:) The Explorer has grown on me for that reason, but it lacks the tiny little pop I like.
