First staged in 1968, the Rolex Middle Sea Race is one of the world’s premier classic yacht races, treasured for the camaraderie it engenders among competitors. In 2024, the Grand Harbour of Malta’s capital Valetta once again provided a spectacular departure point for the professional and amateur crews taking part.Contested by an international fleet of 112 yachts, the 45th edition of the 606-nautical mile race was typically challenging, presenting crews with a myriad of weather conditions. Emerging as overall race winner on handicap was the TP52 Red Bandit, crewed primarily by young German sailors developing their offshore racing experience under a pathway programme created by skipper Carl-Peter Forster. Hong Kong entry Scallywag 100 had earlier claimed line honours as the first boat to finish. Rolex has partnered the Mediterranean’s most prestigious offshore race and its organizer, the Royal Malta Yacht Club, since 2002 as part of the brand’s long-standing relationship with yachting dating back to the late 1950s.
